Footlights Focus: Karen Olivo Heads to Hamilton in ChicagoWhen Tony-Award winner Karen Olivo decided to take a break from Broadway and move to Madison in 2013, she did so to study a new role: herself.

But then a little musical by In the Heights friend and co-star, Lin Manuel Miranda, took the world by storm, and news broke that while still enjoying a sold-out, ongoing slot on Broadway in the Big Apple, it would come to Chicago to enjoy an open-end run.

Yes, Hamilton has come to the Midwest, and Karen Olivo, both Tony-Award Winner and now Wisconsin resident, will take to the stage as Angelica Schuyler. For those unfamiliar with Olivo, she has definitely actively immersed herself within the Wisconsin arts community since her departure from Broadway. She has spent her time in Madison focusing on musical theatre education, being an advisory company member for Forward Theater, and making several appearances on stage at the Overture Center, as well as out of state. Olivo reprised her award-winning role of West Side Story’s Anita this past summer, first in concert at the Hollywood Bowl in July and again with a full production in August during the Salzburg Festival in Austria.

But come September, it is time for one of Wisconsin’s favorite new residents to head to Chicago’s PrivateBank Theatre, where audiences that have missed Olivo can finally see her taking on yet another role in the lights.

Performances begin September 27. For details, please visit BroadwayinChicago.com.

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre Welcomes New Staff Changes for SeasonSummer is often the time where companies see some changes within their staff, and it’s no different for the theater and arts community in Milwaukee. Long-established Milwaukee Chamber Theatre saw their education and literary manager Marcella Kearns become the associate artistic director (who will work alongside current producing artistic director

C. Michael Wright) and welcomed Matthew Reddin, formerly arts editor for the Wisconsin Gazette, as Chamber’s new marketing director.

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s 42nd season began with Christopher Durang’s hit Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which opened in August. Up next will be William’s rarely performed A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur, running September 21-October 16.

On September 4, 1964, Violet Karl begins her pilgrimage from Spruce Pine, North Carolina to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in search of a miracle. The summer of 1964 saw the escalation of the Vietnam War, the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Ms. Fannie Lou Hammer’s address at the Democratic National Convention, the recovery of the bodies of murdered civil rights workers Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner and the recent removal of Jim Crow signs across the South. This is the backdrop for the musical Violet. It is based on a short story by Doris Betts, The Loneliest Pilgrim.

In an age when Miss America was the standard of western beauty and glamorous movie stars are revered, Violet wears a scar that makes a “rainbow across her face.” This scar has damaged her self-esteem and has implications on her place in her community. Violet’s decision to journey by bus to visit an evangelist for a healing results in her meeting strangers who struggle with their own challenges.

Witnessing these journeys, there are questions to ponder. What makes a person beautiful or worthy of love? Do miracles still happen today? How much has our society progressed in our attitudes about beauty and race since 1964? The opportunity for the exploration of these questions was part of the appeal for directing Violet. Devising a concept that would encapsulate the various locations, understanding the psychological journey and casting versatile artists who can interpret bluegrass, gospel, rhythm & blues and blues music was challenging. Well, I am a witness. Miracles still happen.

Ready for the journey,Sheri Williams Pannell

A MESSAGE FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR -

A MESSAGE FROM INTERIM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR - RAY JIVOFFWelcome to Skylight Music Theatre’s 58th season! I am proud to now be Interim Artistic Director of Skylight, my artistic home for almost 30 years. To refresh your memory, I’ve appeared in shows here since 1990, became Education Director and started our Enlighten Education program in 1999 and am now working with our dedicated and talented staff and artists to produce the best possible music theatre experience for you, our patrons. This season is a classic Skylight season, covering the full spectrum of music theatre, from a relatively unknown ensemble musical (Violet), to a holiday blockbuster (La Cage aux Folles), to a popular and hilarious revue (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) a classical chamber opera based on

the fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast and concluding with one of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpieces, Sweeney Todd.

To quote our season brochure, where words fail, music speaks, and that is certainly true of our first production, Violet. This beautiful and uplifting musical, with a thrilling score by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home, Shrek) tells the story of a pilgrimage from Blue Ridge Mountains, with its country music to the rhythm and blues of a dance hall in Memphis to the gospel music at a revival meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As I’ve said in interviews when talking about this show, I think in light of the ongoing national and local conversation we are having about race in our communities, this show is particularly timely. This musical deals with issues of beauty and faith, race and gender in a human and moving way. If we’re going to move forward, we need to share and listen to our stories.

I’m happy to have our cast and production team led by dear Skylight family member, Sheri Williams Pannell. Her vision and passion for this material has been an inspiration to everyone and I’m grateful for her artistry and friendship as we kick off this exciting new season at Skylight.

Act I In the fall of 1964, a young woman, Violet Karl, boards a Greyhound bus in Spruce Pine, an isolated mountain town in North Carolina. Her face was disfigured in a horrible childhoold accident, and she is on a pilgrimage to Tulsa, Oklahoma. She believes that a televangelist there will perform a miracle on her scar. On the bus, she meets various passengers including two soldiers, Monty, a white corporal and Flick, a black sergeant. Violet befriends the soldiers while playing poker, a game we see her learn from her widowed father in a flashback. Monty and Flick question her intention to “cure” her physical disfigurement and encourage her to look toward inner beauty. On an overnight stay in Memphis, Tennessee, the boundaries of their relationships become complicated and friendships begin to turn to romance.

Fifteen minute intermission

Act II Violet says goodbye to Flick and Monty in Fort Smith, Arkansas, their destination, and she continues to Tulsa, confused about her feelings for the men, but persistent in her desire to meet the televangelist in Tulsa. Upon her arrival, Violet is brushed off by the preacher, who encourages her to pray for inner beauty. Realizing the preacher is unable to cure her scar, defeated, Violet confronts difficult memories from her past and the complicated relationship with her father. In her vision, her father asks for forgiveness and tells her, “I raised you strong enough to start seein’ with your heart. That’s what I could do, that’s all I could do. The rest is up to you.” After this episode, Violet feels a change within herself and thinks that maybe the miracle worked. She decides to go back to Fort Smith to see Flick and Monty. Upon her arrival, Monty sees that the televangelist was unable to cure her scar, but Flick notices a change in Violet, which she eventually realizes is the miracle she was looking for all along. In the end, Violet realizes that her healing will be complete once she commits to a new life and a new-found appreciation of her own inner beauty.

WHO’S WHO

Allie Babich (Violet) is thrilled “all to pieces” to make her Skylight debut, to tell this story of forgiveness and healing, and to tell it here and now. A Wisconsin native,

Allie trained at First Stage and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program. She has performed Shakespeare in parks, bars, parking lots, across the southwest, and on the Globe stage, as well as producing and performing with her own company, BARd Shakes. Many thanks and huge hugs to the family, whose support means everything. She especially sends her love to the aunt who inspires her. www.alliebabich.com
