The significance of the apparel is indicated especially by the sleeves and hoods. The master’s gown has long, closed sleeves and the doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves and velvet trimmings.

The master’s hood is three and one-half feet in length and the doctor’s hood is four feet in length. Hoods are lined with the color or colors of the institution from which the individual received his or her degree. The colored velvet border of the hood, which is three inches for master’s degrees and five inches wide for doctor’s degrees, indicates the faculty or field to which the degree pertains.

The Centennial Bell is located at the heart of the Pacific Lutheran University campus, across from Eastvold Hall on the red-brick quadrangle known colloquially as Red Square and officially as Centen-nial Square.

Each year, on the first day of classes, the bell is rung to announce the arrival on campus of the new class. The ceremonial ringing is repeated at the time of commencement to announce the graduation of the class.

The Centennial Bell was dedicated on May 27, 1990, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Pacific Lutheran University. It was a gift from then President William O. Rieke and his wife, Joanne. The Centen-nial Bell and its replica were created by sculptor Tom Torrens, former PLU artist-in-residence.

Lyric Brass Quintet

The Lyric Brass Quintet is a resident faculty ensemble at Pacific Lutheran University. Acclaimed for their Emmy award-winning public television film, Beauty and the Brass,

the quintet presents concerts, master classes, lecture-demonstrations and workshops throughout the Northwest. Their repertoire draws on works from the

fourteenth century to the present day.

For centuries, in academic and ecclesiastical processionals, a mace has been carried by the marshal to symbolize the official opening and closing of a formal event.

At the base of the walnut staff is a silver pine cone, made from a casting of a cone found on the PLU campus. Its head has a descending dove, representative of the harmonious presence of the Holy Spirit within the learning community.

The cradle bears a plaque with the following inscription from Proverbs 4:7, “Wisdom is the principal thing: therefore, get wisdom; Yea, with all thy getting get understanding.”

Designed and created by Tom Torrens, former PLU artist-in-residence, the mace was a gift from former President and Mrs. William O. Rieke and family, presented at Commencement, 1976.

the PresidentiaL regaLia

The presidential medallion and gown were designed exclusively for the president of Pacific Lutheran University. They are being used for the first time during this inauguration.

The presidential medallion is a disc of gold-plated bronze. Inscribed on one side is the iconic Rose Window. On the other side is the university seal and the names and dates of service of all presidents of Pacific Lutheran University.

Distinctive to the presidential gown are four chevrons on each sleeve, signifying the rank of president of an academic institution. The hood is lined with black and gold satin, Pacific Lutheran University’s colors.

ProcessionaL of Joy

Processional of Joy was composed in 1970 by Dr. Lawrence J. Meyer, Professor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University (1969-1994), for the inauguration of PLU’s ninth president, Dr. Eugene Wiegman (1969-74). Since its premiere, the work has become a perennial favorite at PLU ceremonies, including Opening Convocation and May Commencement. The work’s signature opening, soaring melodies and rich orchestration continue to inspire and celebrate Lutes over the years.

On behalf of the Board of Regents of Pacific Lutheran University, I present to you Thomas W. Krise and certify that on February 29, 2012, in accordance with the articles and bylaws of this institution, he was elected president of the university. We present him to you for induction into that office.

A Reading from I Corinthians Mr. Ian McMichael, President, The University Congregation

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

Prayer The Reverend Mark Hanson, Presiding Bishop

Most gracious God, giver of all good things, who by your Holy Spirit has blessed your people with a variety of gifts, look with favor on your servant Thomas now called to the office of president of Pacific Lutheran University. Grant him, we pray, the gifts of your grace and truth and unfailing trust in your presence, that he may serve you faithfully in this office, for the common good and to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
