President’s Message I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and hopefully a nice break from your regular schedules. I would also like to wish you all the best for 2009 – Happy New Year! Our Auction for the YWCA Crossroads Shelter was very successful. Thanks to everyone who donated and those who opened their wallets to make the event a huge success! Special thanks to members Mary Carolyn Hart of Lazer Graphics and Wanda Clancy of PartyLite who provided all printed material for the auction and beautiful candles for our tables. I would also like the thank Lisa Hogan and Lia Evangelista our Social Directors who planned and executed a wonderful event. Truly an example of the power of our group to make positive change not only in business but for our community as well. Our half-year membership is now available if you have business associates and friends who have been considering joining. Our speaker line up is very exciting and our year-end social is included in the membership and available to members only. January is a time of new beginnings. Meetings are held at the Holiday Inn the first Wednesday of each month with the exception of September, which is the second Wednesday. Social hour begins at 6:00 p.m. The Christmas Social will be held on December 3, 2008 at Parkway Place.

Meeting attendance must be confirmed in advance of each meeting. You will receive an email two weeks in advance of each meeting which will prompt you to respond regarding attendance and choice of meal. Special dietary meals require one week’s notice. Please respond promptly to messages as we need to confirm headcount with the Holiday Inn for meals. Any questions or concerns regarding the Women’s Business Network, meals or any other club matters are to be directed to your President, Amy Simpson, at [email protected]. All concerns will be addressed in a timely manner.

Annual membership for 2008-2009 is $350 for a Single Membership and $450 for a Corporate Membership. Convenient payment options can be discussed with the Membership Director, Laura Foster, at [email protected].

Guest Registration: Just want to try us out or bring a friend? Guests may attend for a fee of $35, and may come to a maximum of two regular meetings before full membership is required.

Display Booths: Display your products and services with a display booth at meetings for the price of a door prize. Booths are booked on a first-come, first-served basis for members only. Contact the Betty Halman-Plumley, Program Director, at [email protected].

Table Drops: Only WBN members may leave promotional material at each table. Members with table drops are required to bring a door prize. Remember to attach your business card so we know who to announce at the meetings. As an added bonus, all donors will be mentioned in the next month’s newsletter.

Twoonie Talk: Members can sign up for two dollars and speak for one minute about their business, success story and/or event. A sign-up sheet will be available at 6:00p.m.

Announcements: Keep the membership informed about your business events in the WBN newsletter each month. Contact the Newsletter Director, Kathryn Fanning, at [email protected] with your 60 word announcement (no charge) or full page insert ($35). Inserts must be supplied pre-folded and delivered by the 15th of the month; announcements should be emailed by the 10th of the month.

Dr. Lucie Blouin, Dr. Jane Purvis and Dr. Christie Freeman

Speaking on the benefi ts of Vitamin D and the relationship to bone health, cancer prevention and skin health these top Peterborough Specialists will address the many values this vital nutrient provides.

Dr. Purvis is a Rheumatologist and will discuss the role and important value of Vitamin D to bone health. Dr. Freeman, a GP-Dermatologist, will speak about Vitamin D and its production with sun exposure as well as general guidelines about skin basics and the sun. Dr. Blouin is a GP-Oncologist and will talk on the recent literature around Vitamin D and protections against certain cancers, and cover cancer prevention guidelines. WBN FINANCIAL FAIR The Womens Business Network will be hosting their 3rd annual Financial Fair on Wednesday February 7th 2009. The fair will take place in the Garden Court of the Holiday Inn prior to the network meeting from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. This has proven to be a very successful event with exhibitor tables fi lling up quickly. We encourage exhibitors from various fi nancial institutions, insurance companies, credit counseling, legal and accounting services to participate.

For WBN members the cost of a table is the donation of a door prize approximate value $30.00. For non-members the cost is $100 which includes the price of 1 meal ticket (extra meal tickets may be purchased).

SWEET POTATO SALAD RECIPE

2 pounds of sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1- inch cubes

Vegetable cooking spray

1/2 teaspoon salt, divided

2 celery ribs diced

1/2 cup diced onion

1/3 cup diced green bell pepper

3 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons chopped fresh or 1 tablespoon of dried parsley fl akes

10 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar

1 tablespoon grainy mustard

3 slices peppered or regular bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)

Garnish- fresh fl at-leaf parsley sprigs

Pepper to taste

Arrange potatoes in an even layer in a 15x10 jelly-roll pan. Coat with cooking spray and sprinkle with _ teaspoon of salt. Bake at 400 for 25 minutes or just until tender. Let cool slightly. Stir together remaining _ teaspoon of salt, celery, and next 9 ingredients in a large bowl until blended. Add potatoes and toss gently to coat. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon if desired, garnish and serve. You can serve this warm or chilled. Makes 4-6 servings

Meetings are held at the Holiday Inn the first Wednesday of each month with the exception of September, which is the second Wednesday. Social hour begins at 6:00 p.m. The Christmas Social will be held on December 3, 2008 at Parkway Place.

Meeting attendance must be confirmed in advance of each meeting. You will receive an email two weeks in advance of each meeting which will prompt you to respond regarding attendance and choice of meal. Special dietary meals require one week’s notice. Please respond promptly to messages as we need to confirm headcount with the Holiday Inn for meals. Any questions or concerns regarding the Women’s Business Network, meals or any other club matters are to be directed to your President, Amy Simpson, at [email protected]. All concerns will be addressed in a timely manner.

Annual membership for 2008-2009 is $350 for a Single Membership and $450 for a Corporate Membership. Convenient payment options can be discussed with the Membership Director, Laura Foster, at [email protected].

Guest Registration: Just want to try us out or bring a friend? Guests may attend for a fee of $35, and may come to a maximum of two regular meetings before full membership is required.

Display Booths: Display your products and services with a display booth at meetings for the price of a door prize. Booths are booked on a first-come, first-served basis for members only. Contact the Betty Halman-Plumley, Program Director, at [email protected].

Table Drops: Only WBN members may leave promotional material at each table. Members with table drops are required to bring a door prize. Remember to attach your business card so we know who to announce at the meetings. As an added bonus, all donors will be mentioned in the next month’s newsletter.

Twoonie Talk: Members can sign up for two dollars and speak for one minute about their business, success story and/or event. A sign-up sheet will be available at 6:00p.m.

Announcements: Keep the membership informed about your business events in the WBN newsletter each month. Contact the Newsletter Director, Kathryn Fanning, at [email protected] with your 60 word announcement (no charge) or full page insert ($35). Inserts must be supplied pre-folded and delivered by the 15th of the month; announcements should be emailed by the 10th of the month.
