WHAT’VE YOU LEARNT?What has this process taught you?
What Progress Have I Made?I think that I’ve learnt more about forms and conventions, for example, in magazines I didn’t know that most of the conventions were conventions, i.e. the headline and pull quote.
I also think I know more about design software, like Photoshop as before I didn’t know much about Photoshop and how to use it, so I think now I’m able to use it confidently. Also prior to this, I didn't even know InDesign existed and now I’m able to use it.
Writing articles is another skill I've learnt as before I wouldn’t think I’d be able to write something like that. When I started writing my article, I didn’t really know how to do it but once I got into it, I didn’t find it that bad.
When I Started/FinishedSeptember 2015
February 2016
When I Started/FinishedSince September, I’ve learnt many skills which can be seen when you compare my first piece of work and my latest. For example, I think that the way I cut out my cover star has improved massively as it’s less messy now and looks more professional and tidy.
Another thing that I think I’ve improved on is my choice of fonts as I think my choice of fonts in my first cover wasn’t as good as it could’ve been. I think my judgment of what looks nice and what goes with my work has improved for example, the title on my most recent cover looks better, font wise.
Do I Know More?I think I know more about forms and conventions like what the actual conventions are as before, all the things I thought were just a normal part of a magazine, like the headline and image etc. were the conventions. So it surprised me that most of the conventions were things I already knew.
As I’m used to taking photographs, I didn’t really learn much from using the cameras at school. I already knew stuff like how to zoom, actually take the photo and where to find things etc., as I own a similar camera.
What I’ve learnt? What I’ve learnt about targeting audience is how to target the way I write to a specific demographic, for example, as mines targeted towards teens, I used more informal language. I’ve also appealed to my audience through the kind of artists I’ve featured in my magazine as most of them are mainly popular amongst young people.
I also think I’ve improved on my layout as I think the way I’ve become better in the way I design it so everything looks more in place. For example, I think that the text has been placed better on my latest magazine as I’ve learnt more about how to create a magazine.
