A system of open and distance learning for adult people (over 18 years) It was the first learning distance system by I.C.T in Spain Promoted by the Deputy General Direction for Lifelong Learning. Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain

• This program started in 1992

• The experience began at 18 little villages of Castilla y León; rural areas at the centre of mainland Spain

• The I.C.T. was very basic and the communications very expensive. Back then, the internet wasn't available.

• It was financed by the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF)

hours or having to look after small children or elder people.

• New technologies of information and communication (ICT) was beginning but it was difficult and expensive to reach some groups of the population.

• The agents: Ministry of Education : provider of technology, pedagogical material, expert

teachers, and a collection of appropriate courses The municipalities: classrooms, phone line, administrator.

26 years ago, there were different circunstances :

The program was extended throughout Spain Internet appeared : faster, cheaper and more effective communication More courses, more subjects (languages, design, specific software programs) Other institutions were interested in this kind of training (prisons) Iberoamerican countries ( Perú, Paraguay, Panamá, Nicaragua, Honduras….) joined this project due to the advantages for them: same language, same courses, same teachers.

We consider Aula Mentor is a success case, because:

-26 years later we are still alive.

-There are a lot of courses on line, most of them for free. But we continue with a great number of inscriptions.

-We have suffered a deep economic crisis, but now we are overcoming it and ready to expand our offer.
