MIKE TOMLIN was named the 16th head coach in PittsburghSteelers history on Jan. 22, 2007. Hired at the age of 34, Tomlinbecame only the third head coach hired by the Steelers since1969.

Tomlin became the youngest head coach in NFL history to bothcoach in and win a Super Bowl when he led the Steelers to a 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. By winningthe Super Bowl in only his second season as a head coach, healso became the fastest to win a Super Bowl title in Steelershistory.

Tomlin is one of only seven coaches in league history to win aSuper Bowl within his first two seasons as an NFL head coach.

Tomlin has compiled a 31-17 record in the regular seasonduring his three-year head coaching career. His .646 winningpercentage after three seasons is second-best in team history.By leading the Steelers to a 9-7 record in 2009, Tomlin becameonly the second Steelers’ head coach to post winning recordsafter each of his first three seasons.

The Steelers’ offense ranked seventh in the NFL (ninth passing,19th rushing) and became the first unit in team history to boast a4,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yardrusher in the same season. Pittsburgh’s defense ranked fifth inthe NFL (third vs. run, 16th vs. pass) while leading the AFC andfinishing one shy of the NFL lead with 47 quarterback sacks.

The Steelers continued to be dominant at Heinz Field underTomlin in 2009. Pittsburgh finished with a 6-2 home record in2009 after finishing 7-1 (2007) and 6-2 (2008) at home duringTomlin’s first two seasons. Tomlin’s 19-5 record and .792 winningpercentage at home after three seasons ranks second in Steelers’history.

The Steelers’ defense was dominant under Tomlin’s guidancein 2008, leading the NFL in total defense (237.2), pass defense(156.9), points per game (13.9), total yards per play (3.9), rushingyards per attempt (3.3), passing yards per attempt (4.7) and thirddown efficiency (31.4), and finished second in league rushingdefense (80.3).

Tomlin became only the second Steelers head coach to win hisfirst three games. During 2007, the Steelers became just the fifthteam in NFL history to win their first four home games by at least20 points.

Tomlin led the Steelers to a 10-6 record in 2007, and becamejust the second coach in team history to post a winning record,win a division title and earn a playoff berth in his inaugural season.

Tomlin was the NFL’s second-youngest head coach in 2007,and he became only the second Steelers coach in team history towin at least 10 games during his first year at the helm. TheSteelers posted a 7-1 record at home in 2007 and were 5-1 in theAFC North (3-0 at home).

Tomlin was a three-year starter at wide receiver at William andMary (1990-94) and finished his career with 101 receptions for2,046 yards and a school-record 20 TD catches. A first-team All-Yankee Conference selection in 1994, he established a schoolrecord with a 20.2 yards-per-catch average.

For the 12th consecutive year, WDVE-FM (102.5) and WBGG-AM (970) are carrying all Steelers games.

Additionally, Steelers games can be heard on a 47-stationnetwork spanning Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.For the second straight year, all Steelers’ games will be broadcastin Spanish on Estadio W (730 AM).

For the 17th straight season, Bill Hillgrove serves as the “Voiceof the Steelers” and handles play-by-play duties for the broadcast.Joining Hillgrove for his 13th season as an expert analyst is TunchIlkin, the former Steelers All-Pro offensive tackle. Joining the teamfor his ninth season is former Steeler offensive lineman CraigWolfley, who provides sideline analysis.

JOHN FOX is in his ninth season as head coach of the CarolinaPanthers and has compiled a 71-57 regular-season record anda 5-3 postseason record.

In Fox’s first season as head coach in 2002, the Panthers werecoming off a one-win season that included 15 consecutive lossesand responded with a six-game improvement to go 7-9.

On the drive, the Steelerswere flagged twice with personal foul penalties.• Pittsburgh responded on the ensuing drive to cut the lead to 7-3as K Jeff Reed booted a 33-yard field goal with 8:11 remaining inthe first quarter. QB Byron Leftwich returned to Pittsburgh after spending oneseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Leftwich was on theSteelers’ roster in 2008 and played in five games, finishing 21-of-

36 for 303 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for theyear.

LB Larry Foote was originally drafted by the Steelers in thefourth round (128th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft and playedseven seasons with Pittsburgh (2002-08) before a one-year stintwith the Detroit Lions (2009).

CB Bryant McFadden was drafted by the Steelers in the secondround (62nd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft and spent four seasonswith Pittsburgh before leaving for the Arizona Cardinals in 2009.

In their Week 7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, the Steelersbroke the single-game record. The attendance of 65,597surpassed the old mark of 65,350 set January 18, 2009, duringlast season’s AFC Championship Game against the BaltimoreRavens.

For the season, Pittsburgh averaged 63,458 fans (507,882 total)at home games, breaking the old mark of 63,429 (507,434) in2005.

The previous regular-season record was 65,110, which wasset in Week 1 of 2009 against the Tennessee Titans.

Pittsburgh set the team home attendance record in 2005 byaveraging 63,429 (507,434 total).

Turning Up the Heat: Pittsburgh posted a season-high sevensacks in the Week 5 (2009) victory at the Detroit Lions, led by LBJames Harrison’s three. The seven sacks were the most by theSteelers since they tallied seven against the WashingtonRedskins on Nov. 3, 2008.

In 2009, the Steelers finished with 47 sacks, which ranked firstin the AFC and second in the NFL, after finishing first in the AFCand second in the NFL with 51 sacks in 2008. The 51 sacks werethe most since a team-record-tying 55 sacks in 2001.

Since 1994, the Steelers have led the AFC in sacks five timesand the entire NFL twice.

Offensive Explosion: The Steelers’ offense, which ranked thirdin the AFC and seventh in the NFL by averaging 371.3 yards pergame, posted over 500 yards of total offense three times in 2009.The 371.3 yards per game average was the most by the Steelerssince the 1979 season when they averaged 391.1 yards percontest.

The 2009 season marked the first time since 1979 the teamhas gained at least 500 yards in a single game more than once ina season. The Steelers gained over 500 yards in 1979 four times,including a season-high 606 yards against the Cleveland Brownson Nov. 25, 1979.

The Steelers posted 537 yards of total offense (472 passing,65 rushing) in the Week 15 victory over the Packers. The 472passing yards tied the team record for a single game, which wasset on Dec. 13, 1958 versus the Chicago Cardinals.

The Steelers finished with 516 yards of total offense (402passing, 114 rushing) against the Chiefs as QB BenRoethlisberger threw for 398 yards and WR Hines Ward posted128 yards receiving.

The Steelers also had a memorable day in the Week 6 victoryover the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field. Pittsburgh finishedwith a season-high 543 yards of total offense (403 passing, 140rushing) in Week 6 versus Cleveland, which was the most by theteam since they posted 556 yards of offense in a 49-31 victoryover the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 19, 1995.

For just the second time in team history, Pittsburgh had a 400-yard passer (Roethlisberger - 417 yards) and two 100-yardreceivers (Ward - 159 yards, WR Santonio Holmes - 104 yards).

Roethlisberger’s 417 yards were the third-highest total in teamhistory and the second-highest for his career. Ward’s 159 yardswere the third-highest in his career and the most since he had apersonal-best 171 on Oct. 22, 2006, at Atlanta.

Game For The Ages: Pittsburgh posted a memorable victory indramatic fashion in Week 15 (2009) over the Green Bay Packers.

The Steelers defeated the Packers, 37-36, at Heinz Field andsaw a number of records broken. The following is a look at someof the highlights from Pittsburgh’s Week 15 victory:

• QB Ben Roethlisberger finished with a club-record 503 yardspassing, the most in the NFL since 2006 (Drew Brees - 510) andthe 10th-most in league history. He joined Hall of Famers Y.A.Tittle (1962) and Warren Moon (1990) as the only QBs in NFLhistory to throw for at least 500 yards and three touchdownswithout an interception in a game.

• Roethlisberger broke the team’s single-season passingrecord in the win as he reached 3,849 yards for the season,surpassing Terry Bradshaw’s previous record of 3,724 set in1979.

• Roethlisberger posted his fifth game of the season with atleast 300 yards passing, breaking the team’s single-seasonrecord for 300-yard passing games.

• Roethlisberger broke the team’s single-season record forcompletions as he upped his season total to 302, passing TommyMaddox’s record of 298 in 2003.

• WR Hines Ward posted his fifth 100-yard receiving game ofthe season as he finished with 126 yards on seven catches. Hisfive 100-yard receiving games are a career high and it gave him25 100-yard games for his career, tying the club record held byHall of Famer John Stallworth.

• Ward eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark on the seasonas he upped his total to 1,069, marking the second straight yearhe accomplished the feat and a club-record sixth time in his career.

• TE Heath Miller broke the team’s single-season record forreceptions for a tight end as he upped his season total to 68,surpassing Eric Green’s previous record of 63 set in 1993.

• Miller posted his second career 100-yard receiving game ashe finished with a personal-best 118 yards, posting just the 11th100-yard receiving game by a tight end in team history.

• Pittsburgh finished with 472 net passing yards, tying the teamrecord for passing yards in a single game (Dec. 13, 1958 vs.Chicago Cardinals).

• The Steelers posted 537 yards of total offense, marking thethird time this season they have totaled over 500 yards of offense.

• The Steelers and Packers posted the NFL’s first 37-36 final inleague history.

Defense! Defense! Defense!: Pittsburgh ranked fourth in theAFC and fifth in the NFL in total defense by allowing 305.3 yardsper game in 2009.

A variety of Steelers have contributed “splash” plays that led theSteelers to victory in 2009.

In the Week 7 victory over the previously unbeaten MinnesotaVikings, the Steelers’ defense had two returns for touchdowns.LB LaMarr Woodley posted his second career fumble return fora touchdown as he scooped up a QB Brett Favre fumble andraced 77 yards for a score.

LB Keyaron Fox also made the Vikings pay late in the game ashe sealed the victory with an 82-yard interception return for atouchdown with one minute remaining, his first career interceptionand touchdown.

Pittsburgh had one interception (S Troy Polamalu) and onesack (LB James Farrior), and limited the Tennessee Titans tojust 31 percent (4 of 13) on third-down attempts in Week 1. TheSteelers also limited Tennessee to just 86 yards rushing andforced one fumble.

Leading 28-20 late in the game in Week 5 versus the Lions,Pittsburgh registered three straight sacks with less than twominutes remaining to seal the victory.

In 2008, the Steelers defense gave opponents fits all seasonas it ranked in the top three in the NFL in several categories. TheSteelers ranked first in the NFL in total defense, allowing just237.2 yards per game. Pittsburgh had 20 interceptions in 2008and posted an AFC-best 51 sacks. The Steelers allowed a league-low 3.9 yards per play, the lowest of any defense in the NFL since1978.

Holding Their Ground: Over the past nine years, Pittsburgh’sdefense has been among the best at holding its opponents to thefewest rushing yards in the league. In 2009, the Steelers gave up89.9 yards per game on the ground, which was first in the AFCand third in the NFL.

The Steelers allowed just 80.3 rushing yards per game in 2008.Pittsburgh ranked first in the AFC and second in the NFL in rushingdefense.

In the past seven seasons, Pittsburgh has allowed an NFL-lownine 100-yard rushers. Baltimore is second with 15.

Additionally, since 1994 the Steelers have led the AFC in rushingdefense eight times and the entire NFL three times.

Returning To Form: The Steelers had three returns fortouchdowns in 2009.

In its Week 7 victory over Minnesota, Pittsburgh used a fumblereturn and interception return for touchdowns to help knock off thepreviously unbeaten Vikings. It marked the first time the Steelershad two returns for touchdowns in the same game since Nov. 22,1998, against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

LB LaMarr Woodley scooped up a fumble and returned it 77yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Withone minute left in the game, backup LB Keyaron Fox picked off aQB Brett Favre pass and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown, thethird-longest (tied) return for a touchdown in the regular seasonin team history.

In the Week 9 victory over the Denver Broncos, S Tyrone Carterreturned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown to help makethe final score, 28-10.

Sustaining Success: Pittsburgh has made the playoffs fivetimes and won the AFC North four times since the divisionalrealignment in 2002. The Steelers won the AFC North Division forthe second consecutive year in 2008.

One For The Ages: QB Ben Roethlisberger, who was voted theteam’s Most Valuable Player in 2009, had arguably the best gameof his six-year career in the Steelers’ 37-36 victory over the GreenBay Packers in Week 15 (2009).

Roethlisberger finished with a club-record 503 yards passingon 29-of-46 attempts with three touchdowns and no interceptions(131.9 passer rating). His 503 passing yards were the 10th-highest total in league history and the most since Drew Breesposted 510 yards in 2006. Roethlisberger became the first QB tothrow for 500-plus yards in a win since Boomer Esiason in 1996.

Roethlisberger joined Hall of Famers Y.A. Tittle (1962) andWarren Moon (1990) as the only QBs in league history to throw forat least 500 yards and three touchdowns without an interceptionin a game.

Roethlisberger broke the team’s single-season passing recordin the game as he upped his season total during the game to3,849, which surpassed Terry Bradshaw’s 3,724 in 1979.

Wallace Steps Up: WR Mike Wallace had 39 catches for 756yards (19.4 avg.) with six touchdowns in 2009, his rookie campaign.His 19.4 yards per catch average led the team.

Wallace led all AFC rookies with 756 receiving yards and rankedfourth among all AFC rookies with 39 receptions.

In the Steelers’ Week 15 victory over the Green Bay Packers,Wallace accounted for two of the game’s biggest plays. He finishedwith two catches for 79 yards (39.5 avg.) with two touchdowns, hisfirst multi-touchdown game of his career.

Wallace caught the game-winning 19-yard touchdown pass astime expired in the game to give Pittsburgh the victory over thePackers. His other catch was a 60-yard touchdown reception onthe Steelers’ first offensive play of the game.

Wallace had a career day in Week 3 at Cincinnati. He finishedwith a career-high 102 yards receiving on seven receptions (14.6avg.) against the Bengals. Wallace’s reception was a career bestat the time.

Wallace was the first Steelers’ rookie to post over 100 yardsreceiving since Santonio Holmes had 134 on Dec. 31, 2006, alsoat Cincinnati.

Mendenhall Makes The Most Of It: RB Rashard Mendenhallhad a breakout season in 2009 as he posted his first career1,000-yard rushing season with 1,108 yards on the year.

Mendenhall’s 1,108 yards ranked eighth in the AFC and 14th inthe NFL. He rushed 242 times with a team-high seven rushingtouchdowns.

In his 13 games as the starter in 2009, Mendenhall had 1,063yards rushing on 235 carries (4.5 avg.) with seven touchdowns.

In Week 13 versus the Oakland Raiders, Mendenhall postedhis third career 100-yard rushing game as he finished with 103yards on 20 carries (5.2 avg.) with one touchdown. He added acareer-long 60-yard run in the first quarter, which was the longestrun by a Steeler since RB Willie Parker had a 76-yard run againstthe New Orleans Saints on Nov. 12, 2006, at Heinz Field.

In the Week 9 victory at Denver, Mendenhall posted 155 yardsrushing on 22 carries (7.0 avg.), his second career 100-yardrushing game.

Mendenhall finished with a career-high 165 yards rushing on29 carries (5.7 avg.) with two touchdowns (first two of his career)in Week 4 versus the San Diego Chargers. He also caught twopasses for 26 yards (13.0 avg.).

Mendenhall’s 165 rushing yards were the most by a Steelersince Willie Parker had a club-record 223 yards rushing on Dec.7, 2006. It marked the Steelers’ first 100-yard rushing game of theseason and the first since the 2008 season finale againstCleveland (Parker - 116).

Mendenhall’s performance was just the sixth time a Steelerrushed for at least 165 yards and two touchdowns in the samegame since the NFL merger in 1970. The following is a look at thesix times a Steeler has accomplished the feat:

Miller Time: TE Heath Miller had a standout year in 2009 andhas developed into one of the Steelers’ most potent offensiveweapons as he was first (tied) on the team with six receivingtouchdowns. Miller was named to his first Pro Bowl following the2009 season.

Miller was third on the team with a career-high 76 catches,which broke the team’s single-season record for receptions by atight end, and had a personal single-season best 789 receivingyards (10.4 avg.) in 2009. In addition, his blocking ability separateshim from many “receiving” tight ends.

In the Week 15 victory over the Green Bay Packers, Miller finishedwith a career-high 118 yards receiving on seven catches, hissecond career 100-yard receiving game and only the 11th in teamhistory by a tight end.

Miller became just the fifth tight end in team history to reach2,000 career receiving yards in Week 2 at Chicago (first since EricGreen - 1994).

Miller scored at least one touchdown in three straight games(Weeks 4-6), tying the longest streak of his career.

Miller has 27 career touchdowns, which is second on the team’sall-time list for touchdowns by a tight end. Pittsburgh is 18-6 whenMiller finds the end zone.

Harrison In Charge: LB James Harrison, the 2008 NFLDefensive Player of the Year, received extra attention fromopposing blockers in 2009 but still managed to make an impact.Harrison ranked second on the team and ranked 11th (tied) in theNFL with his 10 sacks and earned his third straight start in thePro Bowl.

Harrison wreaked havoc on QB Brett Favre in the Steelers’ Week7 victory over the Vikings. Harrison finished with two sacks,including a crushing takedown of Favre on the game’s final play.

Over a two-week stretch (Weeks 4-5), Harrison posted five ofhis 10 sacks on the year while forcing two fumbles in that span.Harrison had a season-best three sacks in Week 5 at Detroit andwas named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his effortsagainst the Lions.

Harrison had forced five fumbles in 2009. He led the NFL in2008 with seven forced fumbles.

In 2008, Harrison finished second in the AFC and fourth in theNFL with a career-high and team-record 16 sacks. His outstandingplay in 2008 earned him his second straight start in the Pro Bowlas well as his second consecutive team MVP award.

Double Trouble: The Steelers have a tradition of fielding someof the best pass-rushing linebackers in the NFL, and currentlinebackers James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley haveaccounted for two of the top four sack totals by a Steelers’ duo inteam history.

Woodley and Harrison totaled 23.5 sacks between them(Woodley 13.5, Harrison - 10) in 2009, including a combined fivesacks (Harrison - 3, Woodley - 2) in the 28-20 Steelers’ victoryover the Detroit Lions in Week 5.

In 2008, Harrison and Woodley broke the team’s top sack duorecord (since 1982) by combining for 27.5 sacks. The 27.5 sacksby Harrison (16) and Woodley (11.5) broke the record (24)previously held by Jason Gildon (13.5) and Joey Porter (10.5) in2000 and Kevin Greene (14) and Greg Lloyd (10) in 1994.

Bringing The Wood: LB LaMarr Woodley had 84 tackles and acareer and team-high 13.5 sacks in 2009 after having a breakoutseason in 2008. He ranked second (tied) in the AFC and third(tied) in the NFL with his 13.5 sacks. He earned his first trip to thePro Bowl following the 2009 season.

Woodley posted at least a half-sack in each of the final eightgames and had 11.5 sacks during that span. That span of eightstraight games broke the team’s all-time record of six, previouslyheld by Greg Lloyd in 1994.

Woodley posted his second career fumble return for a touchdownin the Steelers’ Week 7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Woodleyscooped up a QB Brett Favre fumble and returned it 77 yards for atouchdown midway through the fourth quarter. His other fumblereturn for a touchdown was in 2008 against the Baltimore Ravens(Sept. 29).

Woodley collected two sacks in Week 13 versus the OaklandRaiders, his sixth career game with at least two sacks and histhird in 2009. He also posted two sacks at Kansas City (Week 11)and at Detroit (Week 5).

Woodley had 11.5 sacks and 78 tackles (53 solo) in 2008, hisfirst season as a starter. He tallied at least one sack in eight of the15 games he started and the Steelers were 7-1 when he posted asack last year.

Woodley also added six sacks in the 2008 postseason,including two each of the three playoff games. Woodley owns anNFL record by posting two sacks in each of his four postseasongames.

In 2008, Woodley ranked ninth (tied) in the NFL in sacks with11.5 and ranked first (tied) in the NFL with four fumble recoveriesfor a defensive player.

Fantastic Farrior: LB James Farrior led the team with 126 totaltackles (89 solo) and had three sacks and one interception in2009, marking his seventh straight season with 100-plus tacklesfor the Steelers.

Farrior had a team-high 15 tackles and one sack (26th of hiscareer; 21.5 with Pittsburgh) in the Week 7 victory over theMinnesota Vikings.

Farrior, who earned his second trip to the Pro Bowl in 2008,signed a new five-year deal prior to the 2008 season. Heresponded by leading the team in tackles with 146 in 2008, thethird-highest total in his career, and also had 3.5 sacks.

Farrior has 11 career interceptions, including eight withPittsburgh and three while playing for the New York Jets.

Timmons Time: LB Lawrence Timmons, the Steelers’ No. 1pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, enters his second season as a starterafter a solid 2009 campaign.

Timmons had 87 tackles (65 solo) with a career-high sevensacks in 2009, including a season-high 13 tackles against theCleveland Browns in Week 14.

Timmons posted two sacks in Week 12 at Baltimore and alsoforced a fumble against the Ravens.

During a two-game stretch in 2009, Timmons had three sacks,including a career-best two in Week 6 versus Cleveland and oneversus Detroit the week prior.

Fox Trot: LB Keyaron Fox, who had three starts in 2009, postedhis first career interception and first career touchdown in theSteelers’ Week 7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Fox picked off a QB Brett Favre pass with one minute remainingand returned it 82 yards for a touchdown to seal the Steelers’victory. He was inserted into the game due to an earlier injury tostarter Lawrence Timmons. The 82-yard interception return for atouchdown was the fourth-longest (tied) in the regular season inteam history.

Fox started in place of the injured Timmons in the first twogames this year and did not disappoint. Fox finished with a team-high nine tackles (six solo) and recovered his first career fumblein the Week 1 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Fox had 28 tackles (19 solo) on the year and a team-high 27special teams tackles.

Man Of Troy: SS Troy Polamalu missed 11 games in 2009 witha knee injury (Weeks 2-5, 11-17) but still led (tied) the team withthree interceptions.

Polamalu came out on fire in the Steelers’ Week 1 victory overthe Tennessee Titans before leaving with a knee injury in thesecond quarter.

Polamalu was noticeably in on a number of big plays in Week1, finishing with five tackles (all solo), one interception and twopass defenses. He added one tackle for loss before leaving withhis knee injury.

Polamalu returned to action in Week 6 (vs. Cleveland) andimmediately had an impact on the game, posting his secondinterception of the season.

Polamalu now has 20 career interceptions, the most of anyactive Steelers, and the team is 16-3 when Polamalu has aninterception.

Clark Delivering: FS Ryan Clark was second on the team with110 total tackles in 2009 and was first (tied) on the team withthree interceptions. Clark was inactive for the Week 9 victory atDenver.

Clark posted an interception in consecutive weeks (Weeks 5-6) and had 10 tackles in Week 11 at Kansas City.

Chart Topper: K Jeff Reed ranks first on the team’s all-timemark for career field goal percentage.

Reed is 189-of-227 (.833) for his career in the regular season,which is first in team history. Former K Norm Johnson finishedhis career with the Steelers making 105-of-127 field goal attempts,an .827 career field goal percentage.

INDIVIDUAL SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

Getting His Kicks: K Jeff Reed was a perfect 41-for-41 in PATsand was 27-for-31 in field goals in 2009 for a team-high 122points. It marked his seventh straight year with at least 100 points.

Reed’s 122 points in 2009 were the second-highest total forhis career, falling just short of his 124 points in 2004.

Moving On Up: K Jeff Reed ranks second on the team’s all-time scoring list with 855 career points.

Reed has 189 field goals (second in team history) and 288PATs during his eight-year career with the Steelers. He is just thefourth kicker in team history to boot at least 100 field goals in acareer, joining Gary Anderson (309), Roy Gerela (146) and NormJohnson (105), and just the third player in team history to reach700 points (Anderson, Gerela).

Consistent Effort: K Jeff Reed has been among the mostconsistent kickers in the NFL over the past five-plus seasons.Since the beginning of the 2004 season, Reed has amassed695 points, a figure that is second among kickers who have madeat least one Pro Bowl since the 2004 season.

PITTSBURGH — Steelers’ QB Dennis Dixon threw a 68-yardtouchdown strike to rookie WR Antonio Brown in the fourth quarter toseal the 23-7 victory over the Detroit Lions in the 2010 preseason opener.

In a game that featured rain delays and a pregame ceremony to honorrecent Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, defensive coordinator DickLeBeau, the Steelers relied on their stout defense and their young talentto propel them to victory.

S Ryan Clark’s interception of Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford set up theSteelers’ first score. K Jeff Reed connected from 35 yards out to put theSteelers on the board 3-0. But early in the second quarter, QB MatthewStafford found WR Calvin Johnson for a two-yard score. It would be thelast time the Lions would put up any points.

K Jeff Reed put the Steelers within one (7-6) with a 37-yard field goal.On the next drive, Steelers’ RB Isaac Redman scored on a one-yardtouchdown run, capping off a six-play 75-yard drive. Redman finishedwith 60 yards on 15 carries.

After a one-hour and 13-minute rain delay, the Lions drove to thePittsburgh 12-yard line on their opening drive of the second half. However,CB Anthony Madison forced a fumble and the Steelers took over fromtheir own seven-yard-line. On the ensuing drive K Jeff Reed hit a 32-yard field goal, his third of the game, shortly before the third quarterexpired.

K Aaron Pettrey missed a 42-yard field goal midway through the fourthquarter, and the Steelers took over on their own 32-yard-line. On the firstplay, Dixon found Brown in the middle of the field for a 68-yard score.Dixon was 6-for-7 for 128 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for31 yards.

The Steelers gained 286 yards of total offense, but it was their defensethat held the Lions in check. The Steelers defense forced two Lions’turnovers and held them to only 79 yards rushing, while limiting the Lionsto only 2-for-9 on third-down conversions.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — QB Byron Leftwich found WR MikeWallace streaking down the middle of the field late in the second quarterfor a 68-yard touchdown, and a pair of Steelers’ rushing touchdowns inthe third quarter sealed the 24-17 victory against the N.Y. Giants at theNew Meadowlands Stadium. Pittsburgh improved to 2-0 in the preseasonand 12-3 in such games under Head Coach Mike Tomlin.

Tempers flared early in the game resulting in two ejections. On the firstpossession of the game, CB Ike Taylor and WR Hakeem Nicks exchangedpunches and were immediately ejected from the game. The game wouldremain scoreless until early in the second quarter when K Jeff Reedconnected from 26 yards to put the Steelers up 3-0.

The Giants would take a 7-3 lead on RB Ahmad Bradshaw’s nine-yardtouchdown run midway through the second quarter, but it would be thelast time they would lead. The Steelers would go up 10-7 on the 68-yardtouchdown pass by Leftwich to Wallace. CB Joe Burnett’s interceptionof QB Rhett Bomar put the Steelers in good field position to add to theirlead, but the Giants stopped the Steelers on the one-yard line just as theclock expired before halftime.

On the Steelers first possession of the second half, RB Isaac Redmancapped a nine-play, 78-yard drive with a 12-yard rushing touchdown. RBDwayne Wright scored from two yards out late in the third quarter andthe Steelers were up 24-7. The Giants would cut the lead to seven late inthe fourth quarter, but the Steelers simply ran the clock out to secure thewin.

Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the Steelers racked up 412yards of total offense. QB Ben Roethlisberger, QB Dennis Dixon andLeftwich combined for 253 yards passing and one touchdown. Steelersrunning backs accumulated 161 yards on the ground, and five Steelershad at least 25 yards rushing.

For the second consecutive week the Steelers defense limited theiropponent to less than 30 percent on third-down conversions, forced atleast one turnover and controlled time of possession.

DENVER — Pittsburgh dropped its first game of the preseason as it fellto the Denver Broncos, 34-17, at INVESCO Field at Mile High, thanks inpart to three interceptions thrown by Steelers’ quarterbacks, two of whichwere returned for touchdowns. The Steelers fell to 2-1 in the preseasonwhile the Broncos improved to 1-2.

The Broncos struck first when RB LenDale White scored from twoyards out on their opening drive. The Steelers responded when K JeffReed connected on a 33-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

QB Dennis Dixon drove the Steelers to the Denver nine-yard line inthe second quarter, but was picked off by CB Perrish Cox. On Denver’sensuing drive, K Matt Prater booted a 39-yard field goal to put the Broncosahead 10-3.

CB William Gay’s interception late in the first half put Pittsburgh inposition to possibly cut the advantage, but Dixon was picked off by CBAndre Goodman, who returned it 77 yards for a touchdown to giveDenver a 17-3 halftime lead.

The Steelers scored early in the fourth quarter on a five-yard touchdownrun by RB Jonathan Dwyer that cut the lead to 20-10.

QB Tim Tebow tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to WR Eric Deckeron the next drive to give the Broncos a 27-10 lead. However, QB CharlieBatch found WR Antonio Brown for a seven-yard touchdown to trimthe lead to 27-17.

After forcing a Denver punt, the Steelers gained possession on theirown 23-yard line. However, on the second play, Batch was picked off byCB Syd’Quan Thompson, who returned it 48 yards for a touchdown toseal the victory, 34-17.

The Steelers finished with 355 yards of total offense, including 175yards on the ground and 180 in the air. Denver tallied 268 yards ofoffense (128 rushing, 140 passing).

Dwyer led all rushers with 89 yards on 13 carries (6.8 avg.), includinga long of 40 yards, and one touchdown. WR Mike Wallace had a team-high three receptions for 59 yards (19.7 avg.), including a 47-yarder fromQB Ben Roethlisberger on the team’s first offensive play of the game.
