"The first thing I want to tell you, as I told the players, I'm a young coach and I screwed up. I should have kickedthe field goal. Ireally feel that way. There is no way I shouldn't have. I got caught up in the emotion of the game.I'm 40 years old. I made a mistake. They bailed me out. But what a great game. I can't say enough. New Englandis a gutsy football team. They played us hard. I thought defensively we played.veiy, very hard and made some bigplays when we had to. It wasn't very pretty. But as has been indicative of this season, we found a way. That's thebottom line. There is no logic that can warrant me doing what I did other than my emotion of the game.
Are you saving you won't do it next week? 'Well if the scenario ever exists again, I will learn from it. All thosetimes I went for it and you guys said 'what a great call.' Here's your chalice, You can call me a dummy andeverything else and I'm sure you did. Probably somewhere along the line I'm going to do itagain and you'll get thechance to write columns for a week about how I screwed it up But that's why it's a game There's a great group ofguys back there. Like I said, it wasn't pretty, it wasn't artistic, but that's kind of been.indicative of this season --finding a way to win. We've got some work to do but it's nice to still be playing this late in January.
Talk about the reason you went for it "There's no need to go into it I have no mason My reasons aren't goodenough to give you to warrant what I did. I was wrong, flat wrong. I'm going to be the first one to admit it. I'mthe one who's going to have to struggle with it. You guys can write all you want and I know there will be manycolumns to write about it. But hey listen, I made the job easy for you.
Talk about your defense: "They played hard all game, particularly early in the game when we had some field positioneven to start thegame, I thought we came up with some big plays: Ireally think the only big play I can rementherwas Terry Glenn's big catch. When we had to stiffen,we stiffened. Chad Scott -- he's a good football player now.With him and Carnell (Lake) out there now, that's been a formula that's been pretty good for us. I said this before,we've played pretty good defense from that first half of the Denver game on in some pretty big games. I think againtoday we played pretty good. I recognize that they didn't have Curtis Martin but don't take too much credit awayfrom our football team.
Was Jerome still hurting? "No. He was feeling fme. I think NeW England did a very good job in what they didagainst us. Certainly we'll take a look at it and see all we can do to get him uncorked. It was good to havo him backin there We'll just keep gnndrng away at it. I
Did you think that the oneTD would hold up?. "No, I did not. We had some opportunities first and 10 inside theirterritory that we just couldn't get another one to get down there to kick a field goal. Assess Kordell Stewart's nerformance: "I thought he did fine. Of course I don't think I wianything else. It's just another game for him. I know they're big games, but he's playediplayed in the Super Bowl. I know it's different as a quarterback. He's got a great look in:get caught up in any situation regardless of what unfolds, If he doesn't play well, it's not bor all the things that are at stake, it's because he didn't play well. But I thought he did fine.
Was Kordell's run for a TD a called t)lay? "It was run all the way. We had it in for the gargot to it. We just kept it in the plan. We told him pump it to get them to hesitate but there Nwas a run all the way.
Talk about the confidence in the defense: "The confidence in the defense is very high rightmy illogical thinking. It is very high at this point. I think they're playing very good. I feeguys are playing defense and, more importantly, they feel good about how they're playing.going.
Talk about the veteran leadership: "I think there's been a great mix on this team. Not justof faces that have been to that game a couple years ago and they have relayed the message:other veterans that have come from other teams in recognizing the importance of preparatkall the hoopla. You can go back in that locker room right now and there's a nice feeling, bunfinished business. We know what's at stake. The whole thing from here on out has. begames left. We just got the first one and we have two to go."

Talk about the special chemistry this team seems to have: "We have a tremendous resolve and it's hard to put yourfinger on. For example, the 1994 team was our most talented team but it wasn't focused. Too much rap video talkand all that stuff. This team is the most focused since I've been here."
(1BRENDEN STAt: Do you have a preference who you play next week? "It would be thee to have the homefield advantage and hopefully that will happen for us. But either way 1 think we match up well against both.
Why would you like another shot at the Broncos? "I think just to prove once again that we are a team that can playagainst one of the better teams. Today we played against a really good team. I think a lot of people don't look atNew England as a Green Bay or a Denver. In my mind, I think New England's right up there defensively and Ithink their offense is right up there too.
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR CHAN GAlLEY: "It was not pretty from an offensive point of view. Wewere glad to get a win and excited for our team and ready to take the next step. You know how it goes -- one weekone thing happens, the next week it goes another way. We're excited about the win and ready to go on to the nextone, but like I said it wasn't pretty from an offensive standpoint.
Re: New England defense: 'They did a great job. I have to give them a great deal of credit, even though I wasdisappointed with our execution at times. We had some crucial penalties. We would get some things going and gettwo or three first downs, but we couldn't sustain anything and that's something we certainly have to address. Thenwe didn't execute. We got down there on a third and two and didn't make one to keep the drive alive to get into fieldgoal range. We had some losses on some plays that we can't afford to have and be a contending team. We've got toimprove them and that's what we'll work on."
DE MIKE YRABEL: Re: sack and forced finuble; "I was fortunate enough to be in a position to make a play andfinally help this defense out.
Is that the biggest play of your football career? "Yeah, so far I think without a doubt. With the situation we were in,that was the biggest play and hopefully there will be more to come in the future.
Is going to the AFC Championship game as a rookie beyond your extectations? 'When you get drafted by thePittsburgh Steelers, you know that day that you're going to be on a football team that knows how to win and be apart of an organization that has won in the past. That's the one thing that I was really happy about -- to come in hereand help a team win in any way that I could. Now being in the AFC Championship game is something I'll look backon and say 'maybe I had a part in getting us there.'
Set un the defense on your sack; "We were in our regular dime package with the four down linemen, the six db'sand one linebacker. No stunt or anything. It was just kind of a straight rush. We did not have a blitz on. I wasfortunate enough to find some kind of speed around the corner and keep rushing. Our coaches said all week ifyou're the right end and you're in there, keep rushing. Don't give up. (Drew) Bledsoe's not going to look back tohis left. He's not going to throw back to his left IiCs going to roll to his right and he did. I was lucky enough tocatch the arm as it was coming up."
LB JASON GILDON: Talk about the sack and forced fumble by Mike Vrabel and your recovery: "Mike did agreat job beating his man. He got in them so quick and when I saw the ball on the turf; my first thought was 'justfall on it dummy and don't do anything stupid.'
Down the stretch you've made some big nlays. Are there noints in the game where you feel that you've got to comeupwith the bi2 play? "I think that comes naturally in big games, especially playoff games. My goal is to be asconsistent as I possibly can and I figure, that way, the big plays will come. I don't ever want to come off the field."
CR CRAD SCOTT: It seemed like they were nicking on you today. esnecially early; "Yeah, the coaches and theplayers didn't let me forget that this week, that they'd be coming after me. My first goal was to not get beat deep, tokeep everything in front and make the play.
Because they did come after you and you played so well, does this game give you added confidence? "I think I had alot of confidence before, but to hold New England without a touchdown and to come up with some big plays today,maybe teams will think twice about trying to pick on me so often. But if they do, I know I'm ready now."
NT JOEL STEED: Did the crowd have any effect on Bledsoe and the Patriots? "I think so, especially in thefourth quarter. But the crowd's biggest effect was on us, especially when they rallied behind us after Kordell gotstopped at the goal line. I said to myself, 'we can't let this one slip away.'

Was that as tough as it gets? Oh, no doubt about it. That's as tough as it gets. Those guys said tothemselves that, 'We're not going to let the Steelers run the footbalL' And they set out with eightguys at the line of scrimmage, the had the linebackers about three yards off the line of scrimmage,and they weren't going to let us run the football, Our philosophy is to run the football so we have tokeep plugging away. Regardless of what they do, we have to stick to our game plan.
What did they do? Somethina different than other teams that try to stop the run? No, it's just thatthey said, 'We're not going to worry about the pass. We're going to commit to the running game.And they're going to have to beat us passing the ball.' A lot of teams aren't willing to do thatbecause maybe they don't feel comfortable with their cornerbacks. Those guys felt comfortable withtheir cornerbacks, so they said, 'We're going to put eight men on the line, play man-to-man outside,and try to make them beat us.'
Do you think the next team you play might be able to do that? It just depends on the personnel. Ithink the defensive coordinator has to be comfortable with his personnel to play a game like that,because if you don't, our wide-outs kill you.
How are you feeling? I'm fine physically. Yea, I'm fine. The knee was fine. I think there was moremade up about the knee than was actually the problem. The knee held up fine. It wasn't a problemat all.
Did you wear the (knee) brace? No I didn't. You would have seen that brace. It's a big old uglybrace.
Did you second auess Coach Cowher's call for Kordell Stewart's attemot at a cuartethack sneak atthe 2oal line? No, I didn't second guess. We've been running the quarterback sneak all season. Itwas just one of those plays that didn't work. You scratch your head and say, 'if it would haveworked, what would have happened?' You just can't worry about it.
Did you second guess the play because you didn't get the ball? No. Usually, in that situation, we goto the quarterback sneak. The only time was the Cincinnati game where I did get it on onthe one yard line. I really wasn't expecting it (the ball). I thought we were going to quarterbacksneak and just start jumping up and down after you score the touchdown.
Was the final score surprising to you? No, not at all. We knew that it was going to be a defensivebattle. We knew that they were going to come in and commit to the running game and say, 'You'renot going to run the ball on us.' They did that and our defense answered the challenge and made it areally, really close game.
Do you think you guys need to change anything because of what hannened? Nope. We can't changeanything. We're too far into this to change anything. If we just start changing things, I think we losea lot of our confidence because we're a team that believes we can run the football on anybody.Although you stop us this play, we're going to come back the next play we're going to line up andrun the football at you. If we come out and try to throw the football and that's St our strength, Ithink them we lose the football game.
It looked like you had a little baffle with LawyerMilloy? No, he just got up and did my dance. So Ijust said, 'Okay. That's okay. ff1 catch you blitzing then we'll talk again.' But I was never able tocatch him again.

What was the sideline conversation during thetimeout when you were making the decision to go forit on 1? It was a decision to run a couple of plays. And we talked about it talked about it.And I said, 'Coach, which one do you want?' Everybody was just talking and talking, and we justdecided to go for one, and we wound up missing the touchdown. But defense did a great job ofstopping them and giving us an opportunity to win.
Did you agree with the coach's call? You don't want to sit there and fight in that situation. Youhave a feeling of what you want to run, but the coaches see things differently sometimes. It was asituation where it was a heads-np call and it was a fifty-fifty chance. And it just so happened that wewound up missing it with the one we called.
Was there a debate on whether to go for it? We were going for it, regardless. It was just a matter ofwhich play to call. And you could sit here and say it was the dumbest call if you miss it, and you cansay it was the best play in America if you make it. He (Coach Cowher) came up and apologized andfelt that we could have done something differently. And for a coach to come up and say that heapologizes for the play, you have to give the man respect. You're not going to make the perfect playevery single time, and you're not going to call the perfect play every single time.
What olay do you think he should have called? I was done with Coach and whai he called, was whathe called. Iwas with him 110%,
Were you looking back to see if you had stenped out of bounds on your 40-yard touchdown run? Iwas looking to see if we had any flags thrown down. I never worry about stepping out of bounds,because I got that far and I hadn't heard a whistle being blown yet. I was looking back to see if anyflags were on the ground and I didn't see any, so I was pretty much excited and rejoicing for theopportunity of getting that touchdown.
(More comments on TD miss): When we played them down there in New England, theystopped us once and we came back and ran it again. It just so happened this time that we didn't haveanother chance. And to go for it in that situation and not get it, and to be up in the game, I haveevery inch of confidence in our defense, If the team can go 99 and a half yards all the way down thefield on our defense, we don't deserve to win. And they did a great job of stopping them and weended up winning the game by one point.
What did New England do to stop the pass? They were blitzing on almost every down. The defensedid a great job of stopping some things.
How was yourrhythm effected by the bye week? I don't think it was off honestly. Ijust think thedefense did a very good job calling certain defenses. You have to give receivers opportunities tocatch the ball, and if a defender is going to go up and make a great play, like on the interception, theguy makes a wonderful catch and the interception. Hats off to those guys over there, But it doesn'tmailer now. We won by one point and like I said at the beginning of the season, it doesn't mailerhow many points you win the game by. You can go to the Super Bowl and win by one point, and itcan be the ugliest game in America, but when you win, they don't judge you by how it looked, theyjudge you by winning the game.
(Comments on first playoff start): Individually, I hadn't done anything yet. We've gotten far as ateam, but we haven't gotten to where we want to be. And I, for sure, haven't gotten to where Iwant to be yet. I feel I haven't done anything yet. We won today and that's good, but I'm notsatisfied. I'm nowhere near satisfied. We still have two more games to play.

(Comments on New England key injuries) There are no excuses. We've been playingwith these guys all year long. We needed another field goal, and unfortunately, wecouldn't come up with the score we needed.

(General comments on the game) I don't think we tiad them on the ropes. Then I get allcrazy about the non-call. I don't how if it was a good call or not. (Did home field advantage play a factor today?) I don't know. You can never really lookat that. All have to look at is how we played and we played great on defense and theyplayed great on defense. It was just a tough, hard-fought game. We just came up empty.I think we played a great game especially with the goal line stand. We had a bunch ofguys hurt, Ben (Coates) and Terry (Glenn), and Curtis (Martin). (Comments about being frustrated with the offense's perfonnance) You can't really getcaught up with frustration over what the àffense is doing. All we can control is what we can do, Up until the last minute, they got the ball ingood striking range, and we got them out of there and made them, punt it again. (Comments on holding the Steelers to 7 points) If someone told me that before the game,I'd say we're coming away with a victory. But you have to protect the ball and you have

(Comments on home field advantage) I think it was an advantage. I think that maybesome things frll their way on the penalty side. I got blocked in the back. I know that, andthere wasn't a call. We did anoutstanding job on defense rallying to the ball. With a person like JeromeBettis, an outstanding running back, everybody has to get to the ball. We weren't reallyconcerned about him getting the ball. We were just concerned about our defense rallyingto the bail and get them stopped, no matter how many yards Bettis got. Stewart tried todo some things at the end including the boot-legged, and we contained him. But thisdefense, we learned from our mistakes early. We calmed down and played a solid game offootball.

(Has the defense been frustrated over the last few weeks with the offense's performance?)Not necessarily frustrated. Of course, we're a team. We win together, and we losetogether. We don't point fingers around here. If they don't put points on the board, it's0-0 and we have to go to overtimes. But they were fortunate enough to put seven pointson the board and they won the game. Our offense tried to come back and move the balldown the field, but you have to take your hat off to those guys.
