Present Simple Present Continuous

√ Rotinas diárias, hábitos, ações repetidas.

Ex: He goes to school by bus every day.

√ Ações a decorrer no momento em que se fala.

Ex: I’m surfing the Net at the moment.

√ Estados permanentes.Ex: He works in a bank.

√ Situações em mudança.Ex: It’s getting hotter as summer approaches.

√ Horários, itinerários.Ex: The train to France leaves at 8:00 am.

√ Situações temporárias.Ex: He’s taking a writting course this month.

√ Verdades universais e leis da Natureza.

Ex: The sun sets in the west.

√ Com always, constantly, etc. para exprimir aborrecimento.

Ex: You’re always interrupting me when I’m talking.

√ Comentários desportivos, críticas e narrações.

Ex: Jean wins the ball, then he crosses and passes it to Peter.

√ Compromissos num futuro próximo.Ex: He’s leaving for Tokyo in two hours.

Exercício 11. Put the verbs in brackets into de present simple

Stative VerbsO Stative verbs – verbos que

descrevem um estado em vez de uma ação e por isso não têm forma nos tempos verbais com valor progressivo.

Future tenses – WillWill usa-se para…

Previsões sobre o futuro, normalmente com os verbos think, believe, expect, etc. as expressões be sure, be afraid, etc. e os advérbios probably, perhaps, certainly, etc.

Decisões no local.

Ações, eventos, situações que irão acontecer no futuro e que não podemos controlar.

Promessas, normalmente com os verbos promise, swear, guarantee, etc. ameaças, avisos, pedidos, expetativas com o verbo hope e ofertas.

Future tenses – Be going to

Be going to usa-se para…

Planos, intenções ou ambições para o futuro.Ex: I’m going to become a famous pianist one day. (ambição) Previsões, quando é evidente que algo irá

acontecer num futuro próximo.Ex: Look at him! He’s going to win the race.

Exercício 11. Fill in the gaps with will or be going

to. (Preenche os espaços com will ou be going to.)

‡ Ações que aconteceram num determinado momento do passado. A altura em que a situação ocorreu é definida, conhecida ou está implícita.

Ex: They went camping by the lake last summer. (Quando é que foram acampar? No verão –> a altura em que a ação decorreu está definida.

‡ Ações que aconteceram imediatamente uma atrás da outra, no passado.

Ex: She made a phone call and then she sent an e-mail.

‡ Hábitos passados que agora já não se praticam. Nestes casos podemos usar a expressão used to.

Ex: People didn’t have electricity in the past. Instead, they used to have oil lamps.

Past ContinuousO Past Continuous usa-se para…® Uma ação que estava a acontecer num determinado momento

do passado. Não é mencionado o início ou o fim da ação.Ex: At three o’clock yesterday afternoon she was playingthe flute.

® Uma ação que estava a acontecer quando foi interrompida por outra ação. O past continuous usa-se para a ação que se iniciou primeiro e o past simple para a ação que a interrompeu.

Ex: He was walking down the street when he met an old friend from school.

® Duas ou mais ações a ocorrer em simultâneo, no passado.Ex: Lynn was talking on her mobile phone while her daughter was having breakfast.

® Descrever a atmosfera ou cenário de uma história, antes de narrar os acontecimentos principais.

Ex: Paul and Brenda were enjoying their bike ride. The sun was shining and the birds were singing.

Exercício 11. Look at the pictures and use the verbs in the past

continuous to describe what each person was doing at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, (Olha para as imagens e usa os verbos no past continuous para descrever o que é que cada pessoa estava a fazer ontem às 3 da tarde.)
