Course contentThis two-day practical course is designed to provide

a solid grounding in how to deal with common

orthopaedic problems and build confidence in

surgical approaches and techniques.

The combination of lectures and practical sessions will

revise relevant surgical anatomy to enable you to confidently

undertake the surgical management of common articular

problems. These will include femoral head and neck

arthroplasty, surgery for osteochondrosis, lateral retinacular

suture placement for the cruciate deficient stifle, and

techniques to correct medial patellar luxation.

Basic fracture planning will be described and the correct

use of wire, screws and plates will be undertaken.

Learning objectivesBy the end of this course you should have an

understanding of:

• Relevant surgical anatomy and the sympathetic

handling of tissues

• Key surgical approaches to bones and joints

• Fracture planning

• Fracture repair using pins, plates, cerclage

and tension band wires

• The correct use of screws as lag, position and

plate screws

• Osteochondrosis

• Cranial cruciate ligament disease and

patellar luxation

• Hip and elbow dysplasia

Course contentIn this highly practical two-day course you will improve

your skills in surgical stabilisation of common fractures

of the forelimb and hindlimb.

Step by step guided hands on sessions will help you to

gain confidence in repairing fractures of the scapula,

humerus, radius, metacarpus, pelvis, femur and tibia by

applying pins, plates (DCP and neutralisations plates)

and screws. You will use external fixation (KE system) to

repair fractures of the radius, tibia, humerus and femur.

Learning objectivesBy the end of this course you should have an

understanding of:

• Fracture healing

• Patient assessment and fracture planning

• Indications for internal (pins, plates and screws)

versus external fixation (linear frames)

• How to fix common fractures of the forelimbs

(scapula, humerus, radius/ulna, metacarpus)

by internal and external fixation

• How to fix common fractures of the hindlimbs

(pelvis, femur, tibia and tarsus) by internal

and external fixation

• Dealing with common complications of

fracture repair

Course contentThe course outlines the development of the TTA Rapid

procedure. TTA Rapid is fully explained, including the

technique, the implants and instrumentation, the aftercare,

potential complications and how to avoid them. A paper

exercise demonstrates calculation of cage size for the

correct tibial tuberosity advancement. Dry bone and

cadaver exercises follow.

The course is designed for those already familiar with

stifle surgery and the diagnosis of cranial cruciate

ligament disease. Meniscal examination will not be a

focus. Previous experience of osteotomy techniques is

not required, but is an asset.

Learning objectivesBy the end of this course you should have an

understanding of:

• The theory of how and why TTA Rapid works

• The implants and instruments used for TTA Rapid

• How to perform the TTA Rapid technique including

choosing the right cage

• How to minimise complications

Course contentThis course is designed to teach you the technical

aspects of a variety of soft tissue surgery procedures.

Some ‘theory’ will be included in the lectures, but

emphasis will be placed on ‘how to’ perform each

procedure. This will maximise the time you will spend in

the practical room.

Topics have been chosen that represent surgical

conditions commonly seen in veterinary practice and

include salivary gland resection, scrotal urethrostomy, anal

sacculectomy, laryngeal tie-back, lateral ear resection,

total ear canal ablation-lateral bulla osteotomy (TECA-

LBO), 15-minute gastropexy, diaphragmatic hernia repair

Page 13: PRACTICAL SURGERY & ULTRASOUND COURSES · PRACTICAL SURGERY & ULTRASOUND COURSES. Progress Through Learning. ... Regenerative Therapy 21 ... • How to use SOP™ in a range of orthopaedic

Course contentDentistry is the bedrock of all small animal practice. If

you do primary dental work well, you will achieve greater

health benefits for your patients than developing any

other skill.

As dental disease is so common, dentistry should also

account for at least 25% of small animal practice income.

Investing in your dental equipment and training will

represent the most cost effective development of your

practice.

The course will develop your dentistry skills in diagnosis

and treatment. Radiography and positioning will be

demystified, difficult extractions will be less terrifying.

Strategies for client communication and encouraging

compliance will be developed.

Learning objectivesBy the end of this course you should have an

understanding of:

• The principles of COHAT – Complete Oral Health

Assessment & Treatment

• A structured approach to routine dentistry

• Dental radiography and its benefits for patients and

practices

• Techniques for dental extractions – abolishing

“brutalectomies” forever

• Improving client communication, to increase

compliance with dental care recommendations

• Improving patient health

to discuss and perform ophthalmic surgery. The anatomy

and physiology of the cornea, eyelids and third eyelid will

discussed in detail.

You will then spend ample time practising these

procedures in a supervised practical session.

Learning objectivesBy the end of this course you should have an

Course contentMinimally invasive surgery has transformed the way

surgical procedures have been performed on humans

over the past twenty years and it is becoming increasingly

uncommon for surgeons to have to resort to open

techniques. Veterinary surgery is treading the same route

with many clinics now performing many or all of their

bitch spays laparoscopically. The benefits are self-evident

and the procedure is well received, indeed sought out, by

clients.

Many clinics already own flexible endoscopy equipment

and therefore have much of the basic equipment

necessary for rigid endoscopy and laparoscopy.

However no-one does liver biopsies on a daily basis

and this expense must be justified. Most surgeons

starting laparoscopy would consider the bitch spay as

the core procedure and main reason for investing in the

equipment. As a routine procedure that is done on a

regular basis, it will bring in the revenue to pay for the

equipment.

Learning objectivesBy the end of this course you should have an

understanding of:

• Equipment required for laparoscopy

• Instrument handling techniques

• Basic laparoscopic principles

• Principles of electrosurgery and haemostasis

• Laparoscopic ovariectomy

• Laparoscopic ovariohysterectomy

Page 17: PRACTICAL SURGERY & ULTRASOUND COURSES · PRACTICAL SURGERY & ULTRASOUND COURSES. Progress Through Learning. ... Regenerative Therapy 21 ... • How to use SOP™ in a range of orthopaedic

Course contentDay One – Emergency procedures

Dealing with emergency patients can be very rewarding,

but can also be very stressful! Often procedures that the

clinician may be unfamiliar with (or have only performed

a few times), need to be carried out rapidly and under

pressure if the patient is to be saved. By discussing the

rationale of these techniques, and offering a chance to

practise ‘hands on’ in a wet-lab situation, the course aims

to provide you with the necessary skills to confidently

carry out these procedures back at your own practice.

Day Two – Emergency Surgical Procedures

This day will cover all of the major emergency surgical

abdominal procedures which may be required in

practice. In addition to the timetabled procedures, the

lecturer is happy to cover additional procedures (e.g.

pericardectomy) if desired by more advanced delegates

where appropriate.

Learning objectivesBy the end of day one you should have an understanding of:

• Placing a tracheostomy tube

• Thoracocentesis

• Chest drain placement and appropriate management

• When and how to place feeding tubes

• Placing central lines and their indications

• Intra-osseous needle placement

By the end of day two you should be happy to perform:

• Gastropexy

• Cystotomy and urethrostomy/urethrotomy

• Diaphragmatic hernia

• Splenectomy

animal general practice. Otitis externa can be painful

and debilitating; aggressive and prolonged medical

management can resolve a number of cases, but

treatment failure or poor owner compliance can lead to

debilitating and painful conditions. Surgical management

can have a dramatic effect on patient and owner quality

of life.

This course will instruct in the practical approach to these

procedures and the decision making in when to choose

them.

Learning objectivesBy the end of this course you should have an
