For Verizon’s 2014 Powerful Answers Award, Moses won the $1 million prize for his business, Eco-Fuel Africa, which transforms biomass waste into green charcoal. This effort has helped solved a myriad of issues in his community which include:
• Slowing the rate of deforestation
• Improving educational opportunities among girls by eliminating the need to gather wood for fuel
• Reducing malnutrition by giving farmers access to organic fertilizers
• Encouraging entrepreneurship by creating job opportunities for locals
With the success of more than 12 innovations last year, Verizon is continuing its commitment to social responsibility and innovation, and is now accepting applications through June 18 for the 2015 Powerful Answers Award program, where winners can win up to $6 million in cash prizes, plus have the opportunity to get support in developing their idea to help bring solutions to the market faster. Verizon is announcing the next stop of its Now Playing Tour, a mini-music festival, hosted by Terrence J, taking place at Verizon Wireless Columbia in Washington D.C. The Washington D.C. stop of the tour will feature a free concert with a special performance by Omarion.
Generating excitement for Verizon’s partnership with the ESSENCE Music Festival, the Now Playing Tour features free concerts by some of the hottest artists in music and entertainment, such as Omarion, Luke James and Wale. Plus, concert-goers can participate in celebrity meet-and-greets, photo opportunities, trivia, high-tech demonstrations and more! Attendees will also snag giveaways and can enter to win free devices and a trip to the ESSENCE Music Festival.
Those attending the Now Playing Tour are being asked to help change the outcome for domestic violence victims by taking a simple action:
✓ Bring old phones and accessories from any service provider to donate to HopeLine from Verizon, a program that supports domestic violence organizations.
✓ Verizon’s HopeLine program has set a goal to reach 1 million phone donations by the end of the year.
