Poster Analysis

Collectively as a group, these were some of the posters which we had brought into class. We brought these in as they all related to the genre we chose which was ‘Cult’.

Similarities

In the posters there are many similarities which make them clear of what the genre would be. There is a common theme of dark colours. Dark colours such as black can represent death giving a gloomy and eary feel to the poster and it could suggest what the narrative could be. The majority of the focus is on one person. This could highlight the main character of the film. Although there is mainly one person to focus on in the posters, these characters are powerful looking men and innocent looking girls. These people can immediately tell an audience the type of characters which will be in a film and how they are going to be portrayed. A dominance of eye occur which delineates that there is more into the film than what the audience can see on the poster. Eyes are an image which people can find scary or intriguing which can help bring the audience into looking for further details about the film.

Differences

Overall, the posters we had collected had more similarities than they had differences. This is due to the conventions which follow on from the genre which it was advertising. The differences which we did discover, were mainly from the posters on the right hand side. ‘Fight club’, ‘The Master’ and ‘Freaks’ are the posters which differentiated from the others.A few of the posters have bright colours which made them stand out more as they didn’t focus on the dark colours. The brighter colours can make the audience be less certain on what the genre is of the film. Another difference which occurs is that some of the posters contain a lot of people. This could highlight how there is more than one main character and that the film doesn’t revolve around one person.
