Why PBS?

“Approximately one-half of all classroom time is taken up with activities other than instruction, and discipline problems are responsible for a significant portion of this lost instructional time.”

(Cotton 1990)

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Is…

• A positive school-wide culture

• A plan to reduce negative behaviors

• A way to increase and reinforce positive

behaviors

• A plan to teach students and staff

positive behaviors

• A way to monitor and track student

behavior

Implementation

Specials• Blue Lion Loot• Given only by special

area teacher • Earn loot as a class• Establish own guidelines

for Lion Loot day• Reward once a semester

Cafeteria• Pink Lion Loot• Given only by lunchroom

assistant • Earn loot as a class• Must follow posted

lunchroom behavior • Reward once a month for

top class from each grade level and top class overall

Implementation

Hallways• Procedures Are:

– Quiet– Hands to your side– Single file line– Keep to the right

• Yellow Lion Loot can be given out for proper hallway behavior

Classroom• Own reward system• Must align classroom

rules with PAWS• Class rewards are

determined by teacher• Can use Yellow Lion Loot

to reward students

Individual Yellow Lion Loot

• Yellow Lion Loot will be for individual students

• Students must demonstrate positive behavior

• Adults will recognize three students every week. One of the students must be a “high risk” student.

• Students can turn in loot for monthly rewards

Discipline Procedures

• What if after positive rewards students are still misbehaving?

• Reteach and model appropriate behavior • Reward positive behavior• Follow the Lost Lake Behavior FlowChart

for discipline• If necessary, begin to fill out the

Observed Student Behavior Report

What is next for our school?

• Student PowerPoint is available for cafeteria, bus and PAWS

• Student assemblies will be scheduled with administration

• Monthly collections for pink and yellow lion loot

• Posters will be placed around campus• Videos will be created (any volunteers?)• Parent flyers will be sent home

What do I need to do?

• Post the lion PAWS poster • Create two envelopes for blue and red lion loot• Establish procedures for storing yellow lion loot• Fill out the procedures and rewards template• Teach lessons from Second Step or Steps to

Respect at least once a month • Teach lessons aligned with character words

once a month• Plan time to teach all procedures to students• Begin to reward individual students

We are all in this together!

• PBS will change our school culture• This is our learning year• There will be improvements and changes• We need every single adult on our

campus to make this work• Adults that participate with the yellow lion

loot, will get an opportunity for a raffle prize during the faculty meeting
