RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT

Each four different functioning spaces; entrance space, dining area, living room, and private area, have rep-etitions with shelves and colors. The shelves are the same looking except sizes and functions by where they are located. All four spaces are different shades of white, ex-cept for one item of furniture that will be color in certain parts of the spaces. This certain part is a point color for each room, which will show the character of the room.

BAKERY

Several lines overlap together in an order to make a volume and create a space by using thickness of materials.

As using lines than surface of a wall, it makes negative and positive space by overlapping. Which makes a boundary but keep maintain a relationship between kitchen area and services area. Creating a sense of communication by using overlap stimulate customers with smell and showing process of baking.

The following publication is a record of the proposed re-design for the digital arts lab in the Visual Arts Cen-ter of Richmond. The work was done by designers Chloe May, Dylan Halpern, and Sohyun Shim from middle of broad (mOb) studio under the mentorship of Kevin Jones from Baskevill Artchitects during the fall 2013 semester. This project aims to bring a tone of excitement, of life, and of creativity into a space capable of revitaliza-tion. We want to create a platform to encourage vet-eran and fresh students to go beyond boundaries and explore something new. We constructed elements from the room based on both exploration and precedent, making a room that balances freedom and function.

Crit Room

The floor plan for the room aimed to keep furniture arrangement streamlined and sleek. Most importantly, the furniture needed to consume as little visual space in the room as possible, given the tight quarters. The room presented a challenge in the size and need, but the space has unique and charming qualities in the original elements of the building like the wood rafters and exposed brick. The desk arrangement allows the instructor to quickly survey all students’ work and also provide feedback to the entire student group at once.

Between the two rooms, a portal both links the spaces and provide a weight to the transi-tion, a feeling of change. In the critique and ideation room, a set of modular cubes can be ar-ranged in various ways for working, viewing pinned up prints, or having discussion. Across the room there is a full wall homasote board for pinning up work of for any sort of display.

Color

Our use of color in the rooms solves a few problems, and it is important to explain its importance in the space. The colors we selected as the primary two-tone motif throughout the two rooms is drawn from the existing color in the building and amplified.

Overall, our use of color is meant to engage the students and activate exploration in their work. Applied to the rooms, color has a fantastic ability to emotionally and logically excite and guide the students while learning and creating in this space.

Students’ Second Home

A place to improve and develop students’ ability is very important. A resting area where people can relax after they work is as important as studying and working area to get vitality for more work to do. Educational facilities are more focused on teaching and learning spaces like classrooms than on resting area. VCU isn’t an exemption. I want to extend the learning environments include working and resting spaces by starting from an educational place like VCU. Our educational places will become effective and growing spaces and go beyond Richmond to the world. It is very relevant for me to create where I want to study and work with my friends as a student who is learning and studying in an educational facility.

SITE

There are a few places for students around the Shafer Street Playhouse. The James Brach Cabell Library, the third largest research library in Virginia, is located in 3 minutes away from the Playhouse. The James Branch Cabell Library provides a broad array of library services on the Monroe Park Campus. Also there are University Student Commons and Shafer Court Dining Center. The University Student Commons is the campus center for daily activities and a gathering place for the university community. Offering lounge areas, meeting and event spaces, food, entertainment and a variety of services, The Commons is where students, faculty and staff come together outside the classroom. The Shafer Court offers student and faculty dining, including a market and a bagel shop and offering lounge areas as well.
