lotus wellness communitya wellness community for recovering alcoholics

Lotus Wellness Community is a facility designed to assist recovering alcoholics in sustaining sobriety post-detoxification. The wellness community is founded on holistic healing theories and Buddhist ideals. The goal is to create an environment that encourages mental healing, as many alcoholics are dual diagnosis patients.

The community was named for the lotus flower due to the inspirational Buddhist symbolism. The root of a lotus begins in the mud, the stem grows up through the water, and the flower lies untouched above the water. This pattern of growth is known within the Buddhist religion to symbolize progress of the soul.

Lotus Wellness Community is composed of four spaces: Rooted Restaurant and Tea Room, Evolve Fitness Center, Progression Meeting Space, and Reflect Park. Each space plays a role in holistic healing.

Rooted Restaurant and Tea Room is a social gathering spot for re-establishing roots with friends and family. The flow of the restaurant is meandering which transforms the experience into a journey. The white walls reflect the positive void, a Buddhist concept. The pale yellow accent color represents rootedness in Buddhism.

Elements of the design include root details and repeated handwritten names. The feature wall, located on the journey to the seating area, depicts a root formed from repeated names. The concept behind this wall detail is to subtly convey the message that alcoholism is an ubiquitous disease that can affect anyone’s family.

Evolve Fitness Center is a small scale gym and yoga center with a focus on personal evolution. Each workout space has ample views of nature which is said to improve the mental health of an individual. The walls are kept white to reflect the Buddhist concept of the positive void. The ceiling is painted green because green symbolizes balance, youth and action.

Progression Meeting Space is a private space designed solely for the recovering alcoholics. The overall space is intended to be flexible. Although each zone of the space has an intended function, all spaces can be changed to suit various functions. The space accommodates private meetings, class sessions, and social functions.

Reflect is a park designed to embody the Buddhist adaptation of the 12 Steps to Recovery. Each space is intended to encourage positive mental and spiritual healing. The overall path is circular and meandering in order to encourage circumnavigation.

Special design features of the park include three lotus-inspired glass gazebos. One of the gazebos features positive messages etched into the interior of the glass. Another focal point of the park is an interactive memorial to those whom the recovering addicts have harmed. This feature is a curving whiteboard which guests can write the names of those whom they have hurt.

Twisted Jax Bar & Lounge is a fresh twist on the bar scene. It is a choose your own fruit cocktail bar, where the guest can customize his or her own drink. The concept behind the branding of the space is the child’s toy, jacks. Elements derived from the inspirational object are the color, form, and function.

The space planning is intended to use the form of a jack to create movement in the space. This is accomplished through the use of slanted beams connecting to circular architectural elements such as the “social bubble”, and columns. The social bubble is a glass miniature geodesic dome that encourages interactivity and socialization.

Twisted Jax incorporates interactivity through touch screen menus. The menus are integrated in various ways: tabletops, and a wall display. These menus help the guest create his or her custom drink in a graphic and user-friendly way.

habitat for humanitya housing community design for albany, ny

Habitat for Humanity partnered with Sage College of Albany interior design students in designing proposed housing communities for the Albany, New York area. The goal was to design homes that are spatially efficient, as well as to design to fit in with the historical setting of Albany. The exterior design is intended to reflect the eclectic history of Albany, NY through incorporating various historical details.

This project began as a conceptual project in which we worked to design proposals for Habitat for Humanity. The project then evolved into a community service project when the Sage College of Albany participated in volunteering with Habitat.

a redesign propsoal for godiva based on a ribbongodiva boutique redesign

Godiva Boutique requested an updated boutique experience in order to modernize their brand. The proposed design is inspired by a simple elegant ribbon, as used in their packaging, and high fashion.

The storefront features a modern, gold toned glass and a sculptural bow-shaped door handle in order to graphically represent Godiva’s age old packaging.

The glass allows passersby to see into the store, which will generate intrigue. The concept of a ribbon is reinforced by a sculptural concrete band which runs across the facade that has a wavy element to it.

luminaire

The goal of this project was design a luminaire from the conceptual stages into the build process. The concept of my luminaire was an abstracted lotus, as I find the complexity of a lotus flower beautiful. The fixture was built from common items found at a hardware store, such as aluminum flashing, and aluminum leaf strainers. In the light, the fixture looks like a piece of artwork, and in the dark it casts a soft, candlelit glow.

To ennoble the spir i t of a text, I wi l l read that text to unravel i ts meaning before designing i t. I w

i l l respect my

author as my master and str ive always to faci l i tate, and never confuse or ecl ipse the meaning of The Word.

Into whatever text I do enter, I will act for the benefit of communication and will abstain from willful

acts of mischief and corruption. I will follow the methods of good judgement and use no more than

three typefaces per document, and I will introduce but one typographic change at a time.

I will serve my audience and strive always to create an enjoyable, refreshing and sometimes expressive experience.

Though Justified, my text will appear Even in both Tone and Texture. I wi l l reserve my i ta l ics and my bolder weights for emphasis and not for

vast passages. Nor wi l l I set those vast passages in a l l capi ta l let ters.

I will select typefaces that complim

ent with the history or enhance the character of that which is

being said. And yeah, I shall abstain from such typefaces as Papyrus, Brush Script, and Com

ic

Sans, for these are poor faces, are unclean and not fit for the most sodden of party invitations.

Eight, nine, or ten point shall be the size of the body, and never more than 12; except

be it missives for the aged or infirm

. At display sizes, I will m

ind the gaps between

letters so that white space is optically reconciled and does appear as equal.

I will respect each letterform

’s personal space and never force characters to collide. I

will purge m

y paragraphs of Rivers and G

aps. To soothe the eyes I will op-en the space

between capital letters, sm

all caps and strings of numbers.
