CONCEPTUSER: Children + youth currently within the foster care system

ABSTRACT: My design seeks to offer a solution to the question “can a sense of place be created for those living in foster care limbo?” In a system where “best interest” tends to mean constant uncertainty, children rarely have a chance to carve out any permanent space in their ever-shuffling world. Frequently while they are on the move, those items that physically define them do not survive the journey.

DESIGN CONCEPT: To redefine the typical container often resorted to transport a child’s belongings from one placement to another – the garbage bag. With a nod to its precursor, the exterior of the bag is made from black contractor bags. With uniform exteriors, the interiors are customizable, with a selection of fabrics and desired pocket modules to choose from. The ends of the bag unzip, transforming it into a blanket in which they are able to cocoon themselves within this curated collection. One end has a detachable, inflatable pillow, to be blown up when needed. The pockets, lining they’re attached to and the insets in the two ends of the bag, are all removable to facilitate laundering.

GOAL: My design creates a bag that allows a child to keep those items most precious to them in a safe, easily locatable place – increasing their chances of staying with them as they traverse the system. Here is a bag that provides the opportunity for children to secure they’re most meaningful possessions and themselves in a purposeful, transportable environment of their own design and within their control.

redefining boundaries socially and spatiallyTHE MUTUALISTIC RELATIONSHIP OF FOSTER CARE YOUTH + ACTIVE LIVING SENIORS

THESIS

525 w. 145th street | new york ny

THESIS STATEMENTMutualistic relationships redefine boundaries to create place and sustained social capital for underserved/fringe populations in transition

ABSTRACTThis thesis explores the ideas of boundaries, place and placemaking for underserved and fringe populations in society. More specifically youth ages 18-26 who are aging out of the foster care system. It considers what it means to create and design place for people who do not or have not had a consistent physical space of their own and are quickly losing the social support system they previously depended upon. The pairing of this population with that of another group in transition – independent, active-living seniors shifting into retirement – offers a mutually beneficial living environment for both populations who are seeking to establish their place in society. It redefines boundaries between youth and seniors both socially and spatially by intertwining and connecting their apartments to each other through various degrees of connection and interaction. This encourages interdependent living – the giving and receiving of purpose, resources, support, nurturing and sustained community independent living often lacks.

seagram building375 park avenue | new york ny

PROMPTDesign a space in the iconic Seagram Building for a newly formed branding/strategy agency led by 3 partners coming from some composition of the existing firms of Fahrenheit 212, 2x4 or Weiden & Kennedy. Team thinking, communication and collaborative participation with clients and among employees is critical to the company.

CONCEPTI investigated alloys and discovered they are typically comprised of two individual elements melding together to create new and different relationships as a result of interaction via proximity. The reaction of these relationships produces unique characteristics and strengths that would not otherwise exist in a single entity, thus carving out for itself a particular place in the world.

PROMPTTo explore soft design of interior objects – pillow making in particular. The pillow is to be realized and fabricated at a 1:1 scale. It must be easily transportable. The challenge is to rethink the normative expectations of this object. The pillow needs to relate strongly to a single conceptual premise based on texture, color theory, construction, form, historical precedent or function. Careful attention to assembly and craft are to be emphasized. Construction techniques including fold, pattern, repeats and stitch are to be considered.

CONCEPTRhythms surround us on myriad levels daily. They manifest themselves through many expressions both manmade and natural. As designers we are asked to consider these rhythms of life – to not only accommodate and encourage them, but also to take them on and, perhaps, turn them on their head.

Maybe this is why we are willing to take on the dauntless challenge of the sleepless night. To fight the forces, mechanisms and cues that tell us it is time to stop and rest. Instead we find ourselves dreaming with eyes wide open and hands fully engaged. We manipulate our minds and bodies so we can press on and continue creating.

This lunar-tidal pillow serves as a physical manifestation of this phenomenon – that we believe we can best nature, bend it to our will and manipulate it to adhere to our rhythms.

PROMPT

Consider contemporary approach to the domestic environment by exploring the changing relationships between public and private in residential design.

CONCEPTThis project relates the idea of the public and private parallels of exposure within the home to that of our clothing decisions. Every day when people get dressed they are making choices of what gets displayed and what is hidden. Often times these can be changed by altering the state of the closure. Likewise, in this lower-level apartment with three curtain walls exposing it to both the West Side Highway, the riverfront park across the street and views of neighbors across the street, the inhabitants are able to make similar choices for their living space.

PROMPTAnalyze a 30-second portion of an assigned piece of music. Develop a spatial language and design concept based off this analysis to design a production company’s reception and office space.

CONCEPTBrian Eno’s “Discreet Music is the essence of ambient music. A presence that hovers and lingers but does not overwhelm made up of subtle layers and moments resonating together across space and time.

In my analysis I discovered a consistent four-note sequence serving as a base with two overlying melody lines. This space seeks to capture the presence, subtlety and reverberation of the music. A fabric system connected at a datum line represents the base sequence with select points pulled taught connected in one direction to the ceiling and the other to furniture pieces indicating the overlaid melodies. The force of gravity pulls the fabric taut capturing the connectivity and reverberation of these three layers of notes being played overtop of and in tandem with each other.suspended

PROMPT

Analyze a 30-second portion of an assigned piece of music.

A fabric system connected at a datum line represents the base sequence with select points pulled taught connected in one direction to the ceilling and the other to furniture pieces indicating the overlaid melodies. The force of gravity pulls the fabric taut capturing the connectivity and reverberation of these three layers of notes being played overtop of and in tandem with each other.

PROMPTAddress the problems of experience and branding in a retail setting with emphasis on sustainability and cultural value.

CONCEPTFrom beginning to end, the design process of a Milo garment centers around the idea of transition and movement – starting with designer Mireia Lopez’s love and inspiration of dance to the transformation of raw materials into spun fibers which then trade spool for loom to become intricate stitches transitioning from one pattern to another. This design is based on this idea of the retail space as a dance studio. Milo garments are about movement and to be experienced in motion – with the client becoming the dancer. The walls are reflective with an ombre-like finish, allowing customers to catch a glimpse of their performance in these pieces. Ramps to level changes are also employed to transition the shopper from one portion of the store to the next as the program changes the “choreography” of how the space is experienced.
