Dzire, followed by Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent and Verna. The compact sedans are

comparatively more fuel efficient due to their lesser kerb weight and smaller diesel engines

compared to the longer ones.

Many in the big cars segment

There are many diesel powered cars here and Mahindra perhaps sells the largest number of diesel

cars. Mahindra Scorpio, Bolero, XUV500, Thar and Xylo all comes with an efficient diesel engine.

Mahindra cars are powerful and fuel efficient at the same time. Toyota Fortuner, Renault Duster,

Tata Safari Storme and Sumo Gold, Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevrolet Captiva are also popular. Maruti

Ertiga, Honda Mobilio and Innova are the big MUVs available with a diesel engine.

The Smart SUVs

The newly arisen segment of compact crossovers also has a few good ones in this category. A few

names here are the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster, Toyota Etios Cross and the Fiat Avventura.The

popularity of these cars can be credited to their superb engine performance, fuel economy, safety

and comfort and luxury features along with superb styling.

The new automatic ones

The demand for automatic diesel cars is especially on the rise at present. Tata Zest, Hyundai Verna,

Mahindra Scorpio, Volkswagen Vento and Skoda Octavia offer automatic transmission on their diesel

models. Priced between Rs 3.06-3.82 lakhs, the latest version of the Maruti Alto K10 is perhaps the

most popular and cheapest diesel automatic available in the country. It races ahead of its rivals in

terms of engine power, fuel efficiency and driveability.
