Civic Platform (PO), a member of EPP. One of the two

major parties on the Polish political scene since 2005, led

by Donald Tusk. In power since 2007. Despite its free

market roots, the party has been taking an increasingly

social-democratic stance on social issues, and is

supportive of the idea of state ownership of strategic

assets.

. Law and Justice (PiS), a member of ECR. Since 2005 the

main competitor of PO, particularly strong in

conservative constituencies. The party’s platform

embraces economic interventionism and protectionism,

combined with a strong socially conservative stance.

Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), a member of S&D. A pro-

European social-democratic party, it is the historic

successor to the Polish communist party dissolved in

1990. Currently the third force in Polish politics, far

behind the dominant PO and PiS.

Polish Peasant Party (PSL), a member of EPP. A centrist

agrarian party, representing mainly the interests of

agricultural workers and rural entrepreneurs. On social

issues the party maintains a conservative profile.

Capable of coalition with both the Right and Left of

Polish politics.. Since 2007, the junior party in Donald

Tusk’s governments.

New Right (NP) is a populist movement founded in 2011

by the eccentric libertarian Janusz Korwin-Mikke. The

New Right preaches unrestrained economic liberalism,

combined with pro-Russian and anti-EU nationalism. On

social issues, NP is openly anti-gay and pro-life.

Commentary

The neck-and-neck result was disappointing for the governing PO party, which had hoped for a solid victory to lay the ground for next year’s political battles. Of concern to PM Tusk is that the 2014 vote represents a 13% decline in the share of the PO vote and a loss of 6 EP seats, and this downward trend may presage electoral defeats in future elections.

The vote for Eurosceptic PiS represents a major boost for the opposition party, as this result gives it 4 additional EP seats with a 5% increase in voting share. The result also entrenches the party’s hegemony on the Polish Right, as the two parties that sought to capture the soft-right vote – the Solidarity Poland party, and the Poland Together movement – both failed to cross the 5% threshold.

The ability of the junior coalition partner PSL to maintain its previous European election vote at 7% and its four MEP seats will be a relief to its leader and current Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Janusz Piechocinski.

Commentary

8

The remaining results may have significant impact on domestic politics. Albeit relatively weak, the showing of the post-communist SLD (Democratic Left Alliance), with 10%, will place the party in a good position to be the sole representative of the Polish Left, and improves the chances of the SLD joining the government after the 2015 elections if PO needs its support to secure a parliamentary majority.

The major upset of the campaign was the breakthrough of the anti-establishment New Right Congress (KNP) with 7% of the vote. Led by the maverick Janusz Korwin-Mikke, KNP espouses a combination of isolationist nationalism, anti-EU sentiment and a libertarian economic philosophy, with a liberal sprinkling of undisguised misogynism and general political incorrectness.
