What is Bluesky Gel Polish?

The Bluesky Nail Polish brand is hard wearing, with an extensive colour choice of over 800

shades to choose from. These include various textures, glitters, colour changing and classical

ranges.

Bluesky gel polishes have become highly popular in the last few years as the full shine lasts

up to 21 days without chipping, shrinkage or fading when applied properly. Bluesky gel

polishes can also be used in conjunction with acrylics.

Bluesky gel polishes meet European and British Safety Standards and are 3 free, not

containing formaldehyde, toluene or DBP (dibutyl phthalate). The new formula is gentle on

the nail, and products are not tested on animals. All products come with MSDS (Material

Safety Data Sheets) which is a legal document that contains information on the potential

health effects of exposure to chemicals, or other potentially dangerous substances, and on

safe working procedures when handling chemical products. If at any time you want copies

of these, please contact [email protected].

How does a UV/LED lamp work?

Bluesky gel polish needs a UV or LED lamp to ‘cure’ it. This is the term for hardening the gel

polish. The chemicals in the gel polish product which enable the gel to harden are photo

initiators. This means that they need light for the reaction to start which changes the

chemical qualities in the gel for it to harden.

It is the light that comes from the lamps which cures the gel polishes, or makes them go

hard. It’s the same light that comes from the sun, which is why gel polish bottles should be

kept in a dark place otherwise they may harden and ruin in the sunlight. Light comes in

waves and those waves have a different length – called wavelength. Light exists as a

spectrum, and the spectrum is made up of light at different wavelengths. We can see some

of this in a rainbow, with the visible light being split into different colours which relate to

the different wavelengths of light.

Visible light has a wavelength of between 400 and 780 nano metres (nm). UV light has

wavelengths of between 100 and 400nm. A UV lamp emits UV light across a wide range of

the UV spectrum. This means that the exact type of light needed to cure the gel is only a

© www.blueskyuk.world 6 | P a g e

small part of the total light coming from the lamp. An LED gel polish lamp also emits UV

light. (LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, which is the type of bulb used).

The difference between an LED gel polish lamp and a UV gel polish lamp is that LED lamps

emit light across a tightly focused range of the UV spectrum in wavelengths that more

exactly match those to initiate the reaction to harden the nail gels. This means that because

the light is more targeted at the right wavelength, it cures the gel quicker than UV gel nail

lamps.

We are often asked about the difference between a 24W lamp, 36W lamp, and 48W lamp. If

they all cure in about 30 seconds and under , why choose a higher wattage lamp? This is a

good question. LED lamps contain LED bulbs. Higher wattage lamps contain more bulbs. This

means that the light emitted from more bulbs delivers a higher intensity to all parts of the

lamp. Curing is therefore slightly quicker, more uniform across the whole hand or foot, and

is more robust. We recommend a higher wattage lamp for salon use, while our 24 watt lamp

is perfect for home use

The Bluesky Gel Polish Technique

Preparation

Before beginning the treatment, make sure that your tools and working area are properly

prepared. The average gel polish treatment should take approximately one hour.

Good levels of hygiene and sanitation are important, so work in a clean area. Wash and dry

hands (and feet) prior to starting your Bluesky manicure (or pedicure). If you are not a

qualified nail technician, and are experiencing any pain, or are concerned about a nail

condition, visit a qualified nail technician, or your GP. You can also study for an accredited

Bluesky Diploma with Bluesky UK Training School.

Prepare your nail by gently pushing the cuticles back using an orange stick and filing to the

required shape and length with a nail file. Builder Gel can be used to extend the length of

nails. The use of Bluesky Builder Gel is covered later in the guide.

Priming the Nail

Bluesky Primer is specially formulated to remove excess moisture and grease from the nail

and to slightly raise the pH of the nail plate. This is because the nail plate is slightly acidic

naturally and for the best bonding of gel to plate, the pH should be as close a match as

possible. Bluesky primer does this. There is no need to buff the nail prior to application. It

must be clean and dry. Apply the Primer by brushing the liquid onto the nail and wiping it

across the end of the nail plate. Allow a few seconds for it to evaporate.

If the skin is very dry, don’t use the primer as it further dehydrates the nail. Just ensure the

nail is clean and dry. If the skin is very greasy, apply two coats of primer.

Base Coat

© www.blueskyuk.world 8 | P a g e

Choose your Bluesky Base Coat. If you are applying the manicure to nails that are ridged,

then apply Bluesky Ridge Filler Base Coat. This leaves a flawless finish, and will avoid the

temptation to file an already weakened nail.

If the nails are smooth, then select the standard Bluesky Base Coat.

Apply the base coat as you would a nail polish. Apply all gel polish thinly. Carefully run the

nail brush along the free edge of the nail. The free edge is the part of the nail that overhangs

the end of the finger, or thumb. This has the effect of sealing the gel layer, which increases

the durability of the treatment and stops the gel lifting. Also avoid getting the gel polish

base coat on skin, as this will also increase the likelihood of lift. If you get any gel polish on

the skin, gently wipe it away with a cotton bud, or orange stick

Each coat of the Bluesky gel polish system needs to be sealed before curing under the UV or

LED lamp. We have already said, avoid getting any of the gels on the skin, and remove prior

to putting the hand under the UV/LED lamp if you do. This is because the reaction of the

gels under the lamp may cause a burning sensation on the skin. The light penetrates the gel

to cure or harden it. If the gel is too thick this can cause a build-up of heat in the gel causing

a heat spike, which can be painful. If a heat spike is experienced, remove the hands or feet

from the lamp immediately and apply less gel polish.

Each coat will feel slightly sticky to the touch after curing. That is normal. It is called the

Dispersion layer.

PRO TIP: If this layer is gently brushed off with a dry brush it can reduce the risk of

lift. Nail polish applications have been known to last for up to 5 weeks when

applied in this way.

Colour Coats – Decisions! Decisions!

Bluesky UK has hundreds of gel polishes to choose from including traditional reds, pinks and

burgundies, all the colours of the rainbow including nudes, neons, and colour changers.

Colour changers as the name suggests, change colour when exposed to heat or cold. UV nail

polishes colours glow in the dark. Bluesky also has a huge range of glitter nail gel polishes,

from shimmering, to glittering, to dazzling finishes.

Try mixing different finishes – add a glitter top coat to the chosen colour on all fingers, or

the ring finger for a stunning look.

Colour gel polishes are applied in a similar way to nail varnish, and in the same way as the

base coat. Colours should be applied thinly. When using very dark colours, the first coat

might look a little watery. This is normal and is fine. Thickly glittered gels are thicker to apply

than non-glitter gels because of all the glitter contained in the gel. Apply them in the same

way as you would a polish. If the thick glitters seem to stick to the brush, this is just because

they are loaded with glitter. They sit on the nail beautifully, and when finished have a

smooth effect.

Apply the coat, seal around the free edge and cure each hand under the UV or LED lamp.

Each colour will require two coats of the colour nail gel polish. Some very dark colours may

require three coats, but this is rare.

© www.blueskyuk.world 10 | P a g e

Top Coat

As you will probably expect from Bluesky, there is more than one finish for a top coat too!

Choose from the standard shine Top Coat, Bluesky Matte Top Coat, Bluesky Ultra Shine for a

dazzling finish, or Bluesky No Wipe Top Coat.

The picture shows a manicure with a matte top coat.

Bluesky No Wipe Top Coat is the preferred Coat for use with Chrome Powders. Application

of Chrome Powders is explained in a later Section of the Bluesky Guide. The Bluesky Top

Coat is added in the same way as the bottom coat and colour coats. Apply in the same way

as the other coats, and remember to seal it.

Cure each hand under the UV/LED lamp.

© www.blueskyuk.world 11 | P a g e

Finishing Wipes

To complete the treatment, gently wipe each nail with Bluesky acetone-free finishing wipes.

This removes the non-cured gel from the surface of the nail plate leaving a hard and smooth

covering on the nail. Finishing wipes are not needed with Bluesky No Wipe Top Coat.

Cuticle Oil

Complete the treatment with Bluesky Cuticle Oil by gently rubbing it into the cuticle area.

Bluesky Cuticle Oil is also wonderful for aftercare of your nails to look after your manicure.

Bitten Nails

Bitten nails are one of the hardest types of nails to work with and extra care needs to be

taken not to get gel coats on the skin. It will not be possible to seal the free edge of a nail

biter, if there isn’t one present, and so you should be advised that the gel polish treatment

is unlikely to last the full two weeks and may lift sooner because it is not possible to seal it.

A nail enhancement would be better in this case. Builder Gel can be used for this. See the

advice on Builder Gel application which follows later.

Applying Gel Polishes to Acrylics

Bluesky gel polishes can be applied to acrylics to add beautiful colour and long hard wearing

polishes that last up to 21 days. The treatment is exactly the same as the one for natural

nails. Avoid acetone-based polish remover near acrylics as it will damage them and is used

to remove them.

Nail Art Incorporating nail art with a gel polish manicure is a great way to offer something unique, to

experiment and to bring out your creativity. The possibilities are endless, and with practice

you can achieve some unique and inspiring manicures.

Nail art can be a fun service to offer at times such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or during

major sporting events.

Try starting with a different effect on the ring finger.

You can create stripes and flashes of colour or more intricate patterns. You can also add

gemstones or use foil strips or transfers. Below are some examples from Award winning

Vicky Bolus, and Julie Morton, our North East academy head, and owner of All About You

Beauty Salon.

© www.blueskyuk.world 13 | P a g e

Bluesky French Manicure

Prepare your nail and apply and cure the base coat. Next apply a thin coat of white gel to

the tip of the nail. Don’t worry at this stage about it being perfect because you can go back

and fix it. Don’t apply the gel too thickly or it will wrinkle when it is cured.

The smile line is the lengthwise point on a nail where the nail bed ends and the free edge

starts, it is a half-circle that somewhat resembles a smile.

To clean up your smile line use a nail brush lightly dipped in alcohol. Use the brush to lightly wipe away any areas that you want cleaning up, to give a better line definition. You can add 2 or even 3 coats to get the line exactly right. Apply the pink coat in the same way, and finish with a top coat.

Builder Gel

Builder Gel can be used to strengthen the nail plate, and it can also be used to extend the

length of the natural nail. Applying Builder Gel for added strength is the easiest process.

Builder Gel for Strength

The first layer is quite simple, it is basically just a flat coat of Gel. It is very important not to

allow the gel to come into contact with the cuticles and side walls as it will promote lifting.

The best way to explain this is to… Imagine you have a tin of paint and a wooden floor. If

you were to throw the paint on the floor and up against the skirting boards, once dried and

after time a crack along the wall would occur. The paint that is not up against the wall would

have no cracks and would have formed a tighter seal.

1. Pick up a small amount of gel on your brush and set it down in the upper part of the

nail. Gently circle the gel and ease it very carefully up to the cuticle area. Leave a gap

of about 1-2 mm from the cuticle area. Once this area is set up you can now just pull

down the gel as if applying nail polish to cover the entire nail. Seal/ cap the edges of

the nail with the gel before curing.

2. Bluesky Builder gel cure times. Cure all nails for example, in our 36W UV lamp or 30

seconds in the SUN LED Nail Lamps.

3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 to the other hand.

Builder Gel for Added Length Using Forms

Length can be added to natural nails using Builder Gel and Forms. These are metallic stickers

that fit onto the nail to act as a platform for building up the nail.

© www.blueskyuk.world 15 | P a g e

Prepare the nail as you would for a gel polish treatment. Follow instructions provided to fit

the form stickers, pushing them up to the cuticle and ensuring they sit well. Apply Bluesky

Builder Gel in the same way you would for strengthening, and extend the gel to the desired

length on the form.

Cure under a UV or LED lamp, and repeat, building up layers until you have a thickness you

are happy with. You can always file the nail afterwards.

Gently remove the Form from beneath the nail, taking care not to pull it away and damage

your carefully built nail extension!

There is no need to apply a Bluesky Base Coat. Continue with the stages of the gel polish

manicure, finishing with a Top Coat.

Bluesky with Chrome Powder

Another exciting finish for a Bluesky gel polish manicure is Chrome. This uses a powder

applied with a small brush to achieve the Chrome effect.

This is the method you will need to use. Prepare your nail for the manicure as you would a

standard gel polish manicure. Next apply and cure the base coat. You can use a Ridge Filler

Base Coat or the Standard Base Coat. You then need to add a colour gel. Chrome powders

are advertised showing the final effect on top of a black gel polish, or white. Use Bluesky

A083 or 80518 for the black, and 80526 or CS61 for the white.

Any colour can be selected and each will slightly change the final appearance. Experiment

with different finishes! Add two coats like you would for a standard gel polish manicure.

© www.blueskyuk.world 16 | P a g e

Next add a top coat gel. The No Wipe Top Coat is preferred, but a standard Top Coat can be

used provided the sticky layer is removed after curing with an alcohol wipe. Next, use the

brush to pick up and then apply the Chrome Powder. Make sure it is applied all over the

nail. Only a small amount is needed. The chrome polish will develop into a shine when it is

spread thinly. Wipe the brush in strong long strokes along the nail to thinly apply, and bring

out the shine in the chrome. Don’t be afraid to buff it up to polish and get a shine. If a

second coat of Chrome Powder is required, apply it in the same way . Add a top coat – again

No Wipe is preferred - and cure. Some people prefer a No Wipe Top Coat to finish, and

others prefer the Standard Top Coat as they find it has a harder finish. Don’t be tempted to

make the chrome powder too thick, because it can look like a glitter powder than a sheen

chrome.

The Ombre Effect

The Ombre effect blends darker and lighter gel polish colours to form a perfect dark-to-light

manicure. This is a popular technique and one worth spending time to perfect.

© www.blueskyuk.world 17 | P a g e

There are a number of different ways to achieve the ombre effect, and they basically offer

two choices – apply directly to the nail and blend on the nail, or apply to a brush, or sponge

first, transfer to the nail and blend.

The process for an ombre manicure uses all parts of the Bluesky gel polish system. That is,

prepare the nails, apply the base coat, cure, colour, cure, and top coat.

Select two or three colours for your ombre. If you choose 2 colours, apply the lightest first. If

you choose three colours, apply the mid way colour first.

To directly apply, paint the first colour on the whole of the nail and cure. Add a second coat

if desired. Next apply the darker colour to part/half of the nail that you want to be darkest.

Gently blend it with the lighter colour with gentle light strokes. Cure, and apply top coat.

Alternatively apply the colours for your ombre to a sponge or fan nail brush in the

proportions that you want them to appear on the nail. Roll the sponge or paint with the

brush so that the ombre colours are transferred to the nail. Blend gently with a nail brush,

and cure.

Practice your ombre effects, adding your own creativity and flair! Share your own learning

and techniques for ombre on the Bluesky UK Facebook Club.

© www.blueskyuk.world 18 | P a g e

Bluesky Gel Polish Manicure with Pastel Colours Pastel gel polish colours can be thinner than some of the darker colours. It is just the way

they are made. This means that you might find you need more coats of the colour to achieve

the perfect manicure. A good tip here is to start with a white coat on top of the base coat.

© www.blueskyuk.world 19 | P a g e

Bluesky Gel Polish Manicure with Thick Glitters The thick glitter colours by Bluesky are one of the brand’s trademarks. Beautiful shades

stacked full of glitter. This does make the gel appear very thick, and even ‘gloopy’. If you find

the gel polish sticks to the brush and doesn’t drip like other polishes, this is quite normal.

Remove some of the gel polish from the brush onto the inside of the bottle, and apply. Two

coats will give a good coverage of glitter.

You can see from some of the work of our Bluesky UK Club members, that you can mix and

match the effects. Glitter and pastels, chrome and ombre. There is no limit to what you can

create with a Bluesky gel polish manicure!

After Care, Maintenance and Removal

In-fills

Gel polish applications are suitable for in-fill after 2-3 weeks.

If the gel polish is still perfect, the only difference between now and when they were first

applied will be that there is a gap between the cuticle and the start of the nail gel polish,

indicating natural nail growth. If this is the case, the gel polish can either be removed, or you

can do an in-fill.

© www.blueskyuk.world 20 | P a g e

Wash your hands before starting the in-fill.

Remove cuticle from the newly grown nail in the same way in which you would for your

original application.

Gently buff the seam area between the gel polish and the natural nail with a 240 grit file. Do

not buff the nail as this will damage the nail plate.

This will blend the existing gel nail polish and reduce the shine (or matte if you have used a

matte top coat). If the gel is lifting from the nail plate, this will need to be buffed away

whilst carefully avoiding the nail plate. If you want to shorten the nails, you should use your

file to do so at this stage.

Remove the shine from the whole of the nail surface, and use Bluesky Primer to remove all

dust and grease from the nail plate.

Apply a thin layer of base coat to the nail, seal and cure. Apply a layer of colour gel polish,

seal and cure. Add a second layer if required, seal and cure. Apply a thin layer of top coat,

seal, cure, and use with a finishing wipe if you are not using a ‘no wipe’ top coat.

Apply cuticle oil and massage in before washing the hands.

© www.blueskyuk.world 21 | P a g e

Removing Bluesky Gel Polish

To remove the gel polish, you can gently buff the surface to remove the surface layer if you

want to, but buffing isn’t necessary. If you want to, use a 240 grit removing the shine (or

matte). Use Bluesky Removal Wraps Leave these for 15 minutes so that the gel polish softens.

Glitter gels may take a few minutes longer if the glitter is thick.

After 15 minutes, remove the wraps and dispose of them safely. Next with an orange stick

gently remove the gel taking care not to dig or scrape at the nail plate. The gel should come

away from the nail easily. If it doesn’t repeat the process with fresh wraps for another five

minutes.

To finish wash the hands and apply cuticle oil.

Aftercare

Massage the Cuticle Oil into the cuticles every day. It is advised not to pick at the gel polish

to remove it, or if any chipping is noticed, as this may damage the natural nail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here is Bluesky UK’s FAQ about Bluesky nail polish. Do familiarise yourself with these.

QUESTION: Is a Bluesky Primer necessary? ANSWER: A Bluesky Primer is not essential for use with UV gels. It does, however, ensure that the nail is grease free and at the appropriate hydration and pH level to ensure a long lasting finish. QUESTION: Why doesn’t Bluesky UK nail system have a pH balancing agent like some other Nail Gel Polish Systems? ANSWER: Bluesky nail system does have a pH balancing agent! Our primer is a dehydrating agent which has the affect of lifting oils and moisture like a sponge and evaporating them off the nail plate. The Bluesky Primer raises the pH level which is great because the UV gel polish has a higher pH than the nail which helps bonding and long lasting UV gel nails. QUESTION: Is Bluesky Gel Polish used with a Base Coat? ANSWER: Yes, the base coat is designed to get better gel adhesion. The base coat works with a UV or LED gel lamp to create a bond between the natural nail and the coloured gel polish. The base coat cures under UV/LED light. The base coat also mitigates risk of staining from the coloured gels. QUESTION: Do you use a Top Coat with Bluesky UK gels? ANSWER: Bluesky UK Top Coat, is a soak off gel top coat that seals the Bluesky Gel Polish. The Bluesky Top Coat cures under UV or LED Lights and has a long lasting high shine. QUESTION: Do we need to wipe the Bluesky Top Coat? ANSWER: YES, the Bluesky Top Coat should be wiped with the wipes provided in our kits, or acetone free nail varnish remover. Bluesky No Wipe Top Coat doesn’t need wiping.

© www.blueskyuk.world 24 | P a g e

QUESTION: Why do we need to wipe the Bluesky Top Coat? ANSWER: You will notice that the Top Coat will feel sticky after it has finished the UV/LED treatment. This is because the UV light in the UV or LED lamp does not penetrate the surface of the gel, and so this doesn’t set hard. A quick wipe removes this surface coat leaving a hard long lasting surface. This later is called the Displacement layer. This is not needed if you use the Bluesky No Wipe Top Coat. QUESTION: How long does it take to cure Bluesky gel polish? ANSWER: With a UV lamp curing times are 2 minutes because there is a broader range of light wavelengths, and not all of them cure the gel. With an LED lamp gel curing times are typically 30 seconds because the LED wavelengths are perfect for Bluesky UK gel polishes. A higher wattage lamp will cure quicker still. QUESTION: I’ve used the UV or LED lamp for the required time to cure Bluesky UK gel polishes (2 minutes or 30 seconds respectively) and it is sticky. Is this normal? ANSWER: YES, you will notice that the Bluesky UK Base Coat, UV gel polishes, and the Bluesky UK Top Coat all feel slightly sticky after curing under the lamp. It is this stickiness that enables the next coat to adhere and bond properly, and rest assured that all brands of UV nail gel such as CND Shellac, OPI, Gelish, and others are the same. The final Top Coat just needs a quick wipe with Bluesky wipes to remove this. Some technicians find it effective to remove the stickiness from the base coat with a dry brush and that this helps the gel polish manicure to last longer. QUESTION: How long does Bluesky nail gel polish last? ANSWER: Bluesky gel polish will last until you soak it off. It does not peel, chip, shrink or fade. It will last up to 21 days. QUESTION: How do you remove Bluesky gel polish? ANSWER: Bluesky UV gel will soak off in 10 – 15 minutes. Lightly file over the top of the surface with a 240 grit file, apply Gel Remover to a cotton ball and place it on the nail. Never file the nail plate. Wrap the nail with foil and allow the nail to soak for 10 – 15 minutes. Then rub off the gel gently. Glitter gels may take slightly longer. So be patient, and love your nails! QUESTION: Does Bluesky gel polish cause any chemical damage to the natural nail? ANSWER: Bluesky nail gel is 3 free and meets all European Safety requirements. This system uses only a pH balancing agent, which is the Bluesky Primer, to stabilize the moisture level and the pH of the nail. Then the Base Coat has adhesive properties that attract to the keratin in the natural nail, not causing any depletion, only acting as a 2 sided tape to adhere the Bluesky Gel Polish to the nail. QUESTION: Can Bluesky UK Gel Polish be used over traditional gel or acrylic? ANSWER: Yes, using gel polish with acrylic is very popular.
