Williamstown Juniors Netball Club Newsletter February 2016 P.O. BOX 790 WILLIAMSTOWN 3016 [email protected] www.facebook.com/williamstownjuniorsnetballclub Follow us A big welcome back to netball in 2016. We hope all our families had a relaxing holiday and are excited to be back on the court. Good luck to all our teams as we head into the finals of the summer season. SCORING 1. Competent Scorer – Altona Netball Association insists that each team provides a RESPONSIBLE and COMPETENT scorer at each match. Sorry – you can’t get away with “just pressing the buttons”! Each family needs to know how to correctly complete the scoresheet. Scoring for netball is very straight forward. See below for an example of a correctly completed score sheet. You should ask your team manager to assist if you are unsure. 2. Goals Total - Please make sure you put a final total of the goals at the end of the game. If this is not completed, the points for the game are split 2-2 instead of 4 points going to the winning team. It might be a good idea to ask the umpires to have a look at the sheet at the end of the game to see if it is OK. WINTER SEASON The team selection process for the winter season has begun. Your coaches will be asking players if they wish to play next season. Please let them know as soon as possible. If you know of anyone who would like to play with WJNC, refer them to our Registrar Nicki Bokma via our email address [email protected] Please remember to inform Nicki of any changes to your contact details. We need your current email address, postal address and phone number.

A big welcome back to netball in 2016. We hope all our families had a relaxing holiday and are excited to be back on the court. Good luck to all our teams as we head into the finals of the summer season.

SCORING

OPTIONAL EXTRA FINALS TRAINING All teams at WJNC are allocated one 45 min training session a week. Historically we have found this to be an appropriate weekly commitment for teams to competitively participate in the domestic junior netball competition at Altona, as we also recognise that our players and their families will in most cases have many other commitments.

We realise however, that if teams make the finals, the coach may like to have an extra session or two to prepare. We happily endorse these extra sessions, particularly as gym times become available. Attendance at these extra sessions is OPTIONAL. All teams will go back to one x 45 min session at the beginning of the winter season.

COACHING COURSE Netball Australia's Foundation Coaching Course will be going online in February 2016. The online Foundation Course incorporates the current practical course and the online Community Coach General Principles, which will now no longer need to be completed separately. The online course features Lisa Alexander in a training environment, and is focused on more netball specific coaching examples throughout.

We would encourage any parents or older players who may be interested in coaching to consider undertaking this course. See below for further information.

BOYS NETBALL Wyndham Netball Association is trying to get a boys netball comp running particularly for 15/U and above. See below for details.

ROCK UP NETBALL Netball Victoria is starting FREE Rock Up Netball sessions at VU Community Stadium (Whitten Oval). The sessions are a different way to play netball, in a fun and relaxed environment, targeting women aged 15+ to increase activity levels and provide a social atmosphere. If you are new to the sport, looking to return, or simply would like more netball in your life, these sessions are for you! See below for more details.

RULE CHANGES Videos are available (via Netball Australia’s YouTube Channel) to explain the recent netball rule changes. Here is a snapshot of the changes:

Umpires no longer blow their whistle when goals are scored and if it is clear that the ball is out of court.

The use of the word ‘Penalties’ has been changed to ‘Sanctions’. Sanctions will include Free Pass or Penalty Pass. Throw Ins and Toss Ups are considered actions as opposed to Sanctions (or penalties under the current version).

When taking a centre pass, the Centre is required to now only have one foot wholly within the centre circle.

Once a player taking a penalty pass is in the correct position, the player may choose either to play the ball immediately or to wait for the infringer to stand out of play. However, it is important to note that the changes to the rule regarding the taking of the penalty pass do not remove the requirement for a player who is sanctioned for a major infringement to stand out of play.

All injury/illness stoppages, which include blood, will be 30 seconds, and the player must come off the court.

Goal tending will no longer be allowed. Players will not be able to deflect a shot once the ball is on a downward flight towards the ring, including touching the ball up through the net
