    Dear Friend,

I want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so theres no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things rst.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, Oh, yeah, I know you, youre Dr. Rick. Ive seen your ad with that picture of you and your family. Well, Im the guy on the right.

Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had su ered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospitals in rmary. And still, nothing helped. But theres more

A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. e chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then adjusted my spine. e adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess whatI started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. ats when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. ats how it happened!

Its strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. ey also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few.

Heres what some of my patients had to say:Due to an auto accident, I su ered om severe neck pain, vertigo

and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom ee with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before. E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL anks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic

sciatic pain. Its been a long time since I have taken pain medication. J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I cant really take the credit. My confession is that Ive never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a speci c spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. Its a simple as that!

Forty- ve million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their bene ts have been greatly reduced. ats where chiropractic comes in. I have a signi cantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to a ord the care they need. An entire week of care in my o ce costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to savestudies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. e immune system ghts colds, the u, and other ailments. So you may not be running o to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor.

You Bene t from an Amazing O er-Look, it shouldnt cost you

an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/11) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. ats with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultationthe whole ball of wax. is exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. e law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

Great care at a great feePlease, I hope that theres no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. Youll get great care at a great fee. My quali cationsIm a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. Ive been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Nyrie really great people. Our o ce is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee.

Our o ce is called Pines Family Chiropractic and its at 9841 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Jessica for an appointment. We can help you. ank you.

    Savor Your Summer

A s the memories of our summer vacations slowly fade away, we now find ourselves rushing around to stock up on school supplies, to find school uniforms that actually fit, and to gently try to get our little ones (and not so little ones) back into the spirit of learning. In other words: its Back to School time!

While the hot and sticky summer temperatures will stay with us for a few months longer, it wont be long before were back into our school time routines. Study sessions, afterschool activities and sports will soon start anew.

Before your weekends are once again overtaken by sports practices and birthday parties, take time to enjoy these final weeks of summer. Remember, fun family memo-ries are made of lazy days in the pool and late-night movie marathons.

Cherish the carefree days of summer because well be Back to School before you know it!

    Sincerely,

    Sven BudzischSven Budzisch

S ixteen Pembroke Pines teens are on their way to becoming race car drivers. Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League (PAL) recently finished its first Go Kart season and the second season is already under way.

PAL Executive Director Joe Williams, a retired B.S.O. Deputy, along withSergeant Lance Carmanof the Pembroke Pines Police Department, developed the rac-ing program to provide something new and exciting for boys and girls, ages 9 to 17. It is the first PAL Go Kart racing team established in the United States. During the initial six-week season, PAL racers received points for their qualifying position, final race position and for the quickest lap of the day.The season win-ners were presented awards at a luncheon held atRickeys Restaurant and Lounge. The winners were: 1st place, Logan Carman, 2nd place, Sean Lopez; 3rd place, Brent Cejka. Tied for Rookie of the Year were Steven Scopa and Alex Hess.

The program began its second season in mid-August and has expanded to a 10-race season held over 20 weeks. The racing team competes at K1 Speed of South Florida,

2950 Stirling Rd. in Hollywood, which is a brand new facility and utilizes cars that are 100% electric. Racers must be 48 and a member of the Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League. The racing program begins with a four hour class to teach the kids about teen driving safety, road rage and DUI, as well as how to safely operate a Go Kart. Once they complete the course, they have an opportunity to compete.

Nineteen time winner of Latin American Nascar races Dario Echeverry serves as a consultant for the program. Our PAL team is young, but they are learning a lot about safety, said Echeverry. When they are 16, they will be prepared to drive safely. They will know they can race, but that they have to do it on the track. Once the kids are more experienced, they can move up to the Bandolero and then to the Legend car racing.

PAL is a recreational and educational oriented juvenile crime prevention program that is designed to help create better relations between police officers and the youth in the community. For information, call 954-986-5044 or visit www.pembrokepinespal.org.

W illiam Bill Seldine joined the Rotary fifty years ago and has yet to miss a single meeting. The Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines recently honored him for his perfect attendance.

The retired CPA says he was invited to become a member after he purchased his accounting practice in 1961. The organization was a good source of business for him so he made it a point to attend on a regular basis. Over the years, however, it became much more. During his second year as a Rotarian, he was elected Treasurer, a position he would hold for 38 years. He also served as President and Secretary for a year. The Rotary is a quality organization on both a local and international level, said Seldine. I have met a lot of very fine people because I was a member.

Seldine knew that he was being honored at the Rotarys annual installation dinner, but had no idea that there were so many surprises in store for him. I thought I was going to get a 50-year pin, a plaque and a pat on the back, said Seldine. Among the 50 Rotarians and guests were his children, who flew in from all over the country to attend the event. They spoke about how much they love their dad and presented a slide show

of him growing up. Miramars Mayor Lori C. Moseley declared it Bill Seldine Day and Rotary Governor Todd Dayton presented him with an engraved crystal statue for 50 years of service. He received a framed letter from Governor Rich Scott thanking him for dedication. I never expected all of this, said Seldine. It is very heart warming.

There are approximately 2,000 Rotarians in Seldines Rotary district and he is the only one with 50 years of service. The closest mem-ber has 32 years of loyal attendance. For the past few years, Seldine has personally raised $3,000, which is ten percent of the clubs budget. He has been very involved with Meals on Wheels and many other projects. Bill is always the first person to show up and the last one to leave, said Carl Lanke, President of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines. I cannot say enough about him. It is an honor to be in the club with him.

The Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines meets on Thursdays at 12:15 at Pembroke Lakes Country Club, 10500 Taft St., in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-401-8678 or visit www.clubrunner.ca/miramar-pines.

R esidents of Childrens Harbor in Pembroke Pines have been enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables from their very own garden. More than 20 volunteers recently dedicated their day to planting an edible garden on the 13-acre campus, which provides foster homes for sibling groups, as well as pregnant and parenting teenagers.

Joanna Sheinberg coordinated the project, which was sponsored by the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, Ultimate Sports Institute, and the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine. Other project supporters included Southwest Ranches Farmers Market, Garden of Delights, Organic Green Solutions, and Somerset Soil, Inc. Under the guidance of Organic Green Solutions, the volunteers planted two raised bed gardens and approximately 30 fruit trees. By teaching children the practices and value of farming and gardening, we can empower them to be more self sufficient and connected to nature, said Andrew Boshears of Organic Green Solutions. This way they will know the importance of environmental responsibility while having the assurance that when all else fails they can still provide a meal for their family and save the seeds for another.

The kids and families at Childrens Harbor have been working together to take

care of the garden, which is filled with eggplant, green beans, red lettuce and more. There are also banana, cherry and mangos trees on the property. After nurturing the plants and watching them grow, they have been enjoying the fruits and vegetables in a variety of healthy meals, said Jennifer Stewart, Director of Development. The kids are more inclined to eat their veggies, since they have been involved in the process. Stewart says that they plan to expand the garden once the current one is running smoothly.

Volunteers from the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston have been involved in many other projects at Childrens Harbor

throughout the years. Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn and grow, said Tom Perregaux, Executive Director of the Sheinberg YMCA of Weston. It is our pleasure to open our doors to Childrens Harbor. Sue Glasscock, President and CEO of Childrens Harbor, says that Childrens Harbor is privileged to have such a special friendship with the Sheinberg YMCA of Weston. The edible landscaping offers yet another new experience for our children to learn and grow.

Four members of Miramars Fire-Rescue team recently tested their skills dur-ing the Mexican Red Cross first International ALS Competition at the Centro Nacional de Capacitacin y Adiestramiento in Mxico. The team - Captain Kelly Byrne, Captain Jermaine McFarlane, Lieutenant Manny Esparza and Firefighter/Paramedic Clint Estep

    - won second place in the competition. They were accompanied by Medical Director Dr. Mazyar Rouhani and Captain Ricky Barnet.

Fifteen teams participated in nine different scenarios that simulated a typical day in the life of an EMS pro-vider. They had to repel into a confined space to treat a patient with a pelvic fracture; pull a 200 pound mannequin from a fire and treat his injuries; row a boat in order to attend to over 20 patients involved in a bus accident and more. Your accomplishment is a direct result of your efforts to excel in the fire-rescue service, said Chief of Fire-Rescue Fred Kunz as he welcomed the department members back home. You are all a credit to the profession and the

Department. We are proud of you.For several years, the Mexican

Red Cross has been coming to the United States to participate in similar Emergency Medical Services com-petitions. The organization asked Captain Barnet to help organize an EMS competition in Mexico. The Red Cross also asked Barnet to help standardize the EMS system in Mexico and develop a national standard for the level of training an EMS should have to become an EMT or a paramedic. There are a limited number of para-medics in Mexico and it often takes them a long time to reach emergency situations. We are honored that a national organization has asked a small city like Miramar to help set up a system, said Barnet. We are happy to help. As part of the training,

teams from the Mexican Red Cross have been riding with the Miramar Fire-Rescue team to better understand how it handles calls.

T emperatures are on the rise as another Florida summer is in full swing. As we all look to beat the summer heat, our swimming pools will get crowded quickly. In just a one week span last month, four children nearly drowned in Palm Beach County alone. This was a sober reminder that swimming pools can be deadly traps for children.

Each day, approximately ten people die from unintentional drowning. In fact, drowning is the sixth leading cause of uninten-

tional death by injury for people of all ages and the second leading cause of child death in the United States, behind only motor vehicle accidents. Statistically, fifty percent of children submerged in pools die.

Too often, drowning accidents are preventable. As parents, we encourage our neighbors in the community to stay safe in and around pools, spas, lakes, canals and the beach by practicing as many safety steps as possible. Children under five are most at risk and have the highest drowning rate of any age group. In fact, Florida has the highest drowning death rate in the nation for children under five.

Here are a few tips to help prevent these types of accidents. Never leave a child unat-tended. If a child wanders off and you lose site of him/her, check the pool first. Also, take all physical safety precautions possible. Install child proof fences around home swimming pools. The fence should be four sided and keep the pool area completely separate from the house and the yard. The fence should be at least four feet high. In addition, cover and lock hot tubs when they arent in use and keep rescue equipment such as a life preserver and telephone near the pool. Also, install an alarm on doors and/or windows so you will be alerted if one is opened.

Finally, never drink alcohol while you are responsible for watching children near or in a pool. Alcohol can dull the senses and make it more likely you wont notice a dangerous situation. Alcohol can also increase the time it takes for you to react to a drowning situation.

Education is another key to reducing drowning accidents. Statistics show that par-ticipation in formal swimming classes reduces the risk of drowning in children under five by as much as 88%. Taking a CPR class is also important. In a drowning situation, seconds count. CPR performed by bystanders before emergency personnel arrive has been shown to improve the outcome in many victims. The quicker the intervention occurs, the more likely for an improved outcome.

A s the summer winds down, great changes are underway for all of us this fall.We will all deal with dif-ferent school leadership and different ways of handling our shrinking city budgets. We will also find ways to continue to work with a fluctuating economy. But the most interesting issue we will face that will carry significant impact on all our futures, and the future of our state, will be redistricting.

Every ten years, after the Census is taken, the Florida Legislature is tasked with redrawing the boundaries of our Congressional, state house, and state senate districts. The intent is to ensure that districts are equal in population so that each vote counts

equally. From Floridas sheer population growth, the state has gained two more Congressional seats.

In order to ensure a fair process, Amendments 5 and 6 were passed by 63% of Florida voters on November 10, 2010.The amendments established rules in the Florida Constitution to achieve balanced voting districts. The Florida Constitution now pro-hibits political favoritism where districts are drawn to favor incumbent politicians or political parties. It requires that districts be compact, contiguous, and follow city or county lines where feasible.

It is no secret that once redistricting takes place, we can possibly see a shift in the political scene in Florida.Redistricting can and will bring out new candidates, seek-ing to represent new districts, and can result in a host of new issues. New issues can possibly lead to different impacts on our quality of life. They can also have an impact on what priorities we address as a city, county, region and state. It will naturally be challenging to decide what priorities to pursue.

Throughout the next year, the Legislature will be hosting several public hearings throughout the state from June 20 to September 1.As citizens, it is our civic duty to take an active and vital role in how our government will deal with those issues that can have a severe impact on all our futures. So, I encourage you to attend these hearings and listen to what is being said by your fellow residents as well as the presenters.Through this effort you can understand firsthand the issues that will be faced by all parties as they seek to draw boundaries that will be fair and reflective of our wonderfully diverse population that is Florida.

Summer is a difficult time at most food pantries, since students lose access to school-provided breakfast and lunch meals and there are fewer donations from groups and private individuals. When Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis learned that The Pantry of Broward would be faced with a food shortage this summer, he made it his mission to fill the shelves. He solicited help from other elected officials in Broward County. He also spoke at the April Broward League of Cities meeting, where he introduced Food Pantry CEO Catherine

Penny Loughan. Our seniors never expected to live this long, Loughan told the elected officials.

Times are changing and we need to take care of our seniors. Five cities and one commission district accepted the challenge. In only three months, the effort resulted in a donation of 9,793 pounds of food and a check for $124.

The Pantry of Broward helps an average of 400 households every month by giving out 22,000 pounds of food to seniors who are either on a low fixed income or raising grandchildren. Each household is given a 55 pound box of staples, to help them get through the month, said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. In many cases, the food makes it possible for the seniors to purchase medications and other necessities. The Pantry is

always in need of items like jelly, Jell-O, peanut butter, non-frosted cereal, chili, spaghetti sauce, pasta, oatmeal, tuna/canned meats and other non-perishables, as well as donations of store gift cards.

We are very excited and cannot thank the Mayor enough for all of his hard work and efforts, said David Esposito of The Pantry of Broward Development Department.

Ortis is a champion of many worth-while causes, but he holds the Food Pantry Challenge near and dear to his heart. As a child our family relied on the generosity of others to fill our pantry, said Mayor Ortis. Life was difficult.

His ultimate goal is for every City to sign up for a specific month to ensure that the pantry is filled year round.

    ask the mayor

Well, we won another award for the great City of Pembroke Pines. We came in second by just a slim margin in the U.S. Conference of Mayors drinking water contest. Pembroke Pines was selected to be one of the five finalists to be judged at the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting.

There were five decanters numbered from one to five and as Mayors passed by they were asked to sip and taste the water and judge the best tasting by marking a scoring card from

1-5. The five finalists were Pembroke Pines; Racine, Wisconsin; Denton, Texas; Rochester, New York and Albany, New York. Well, Racine, Wisconsin just squeaked by us and we came in

second - a great honor none the less. Our City water comes from the Biscayne Aquifer and fluoride is added to it. Not only

is our water tasty, but it is good for you and your children. This is a perfect example of why you should not be buying all of those plastic bottles that we have to recycle (hope-fully) and instead just take our award winning water with you all day long.

I wanted to talk about recycling once again. Many of you know that we have an active recycling program in Pembroke Pines. We now have single stream recycling which means that you can combine plastics bottles and newspapers. Recycling is good for the environment and reduces our carbon footprint. It is a mandate from the State of Florida to reduce the Carbon Footprint by 75%. The green and blue tubs that you see out once a week for collection are provided free from the City. If you do not have those tubs, please call our Utility Department which will provide them.

Recycling always produces revenue for the City because it reduces the Solid Waste tonnage. My message, lets all get into the recycling mode.

I wanted to inform you that we are now providing fire service to the Town of Southwest Ranches. This is what local governments should be doing to help each other. It will reduce our budget and the Town gets great fire service - a win/win for all.

Please have a safe and happy and enjoyable summer. As usual, I am always available at [email protected] or by calling 954-435-6505.

M iramars Palm View Animal Hospital combines the highest level of veterinary medicine with outstanding client service and a compassionate touch. The full-service veterinary hospital offers a variety of services for dogs and cats, including regular preventative care, medicine, surgery, dental care, bathing, boarding and more. The caring and knowledgeable staff has at least seven years of experience. The animal hospital is conveniently located at 12120 Miramar Parkway,

in the Miramar Square Plaza near Kohls, just east of the 1-75 Miramar exit.

Owner Dr. Waldie-Torres has had a passion for animals for as long as she can remember, so it was a natural choice for her to become a veterinarian. Growing up, she had dogs, cats, parrots, fish and hamsters. She currently has four cats and some fish. I just love being around animals and caring for them, said Dr.Waldie-Torres. They are wonderful companions.

In 2002, the native South Floridian obtained her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida. After practicing in Coral Springs for over nine years, she decided to open an office closer to her Miramar home. There are so many animals in my own neighborhood and community that need help and I wanted to reach out to them, said Waldie-Torres. Our goal is to provide an excellent experience for both the patient and owner.

Palm View uses brand new state-of-the-art equipment which allows Dr. Waldie-Torres and her staff to do things in an efficient manner that produces quick results. The hospital has three examination rooms; a pharmacy; treatment area with laboratory; surgical suite; bathing area and isolation area. It has digital radiology equipment so x-rays can be read in less than a minute. It also has an in-house lab, eliminating the need to send out blood work, urine and other samples. In only a few minutes, results are ready and Dr. Waldie-Torres can begin recommending a course of treatment. In the event that a patient requires surgery, most procedures are done at the hospital, where the patient is comfortable and familiar.

Dr. Waldie-Torres recommends annual visits for young pets and more frequent visits for older pets. It is important to discover issues as early as possible, said Dr. Waldie-Torres.

A check- up often reveals health problems that the owner had not noticed. This protects the pets, as well as owners that can catch certain diseases from their pets. During a full physical exam, Dr. Waldie-Torres checks the animals eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth and skin; listens to the heart and lungs; examines the joints and skeletal system; palpates the abdomen to feel internal organs; updates vaccines and more. She also recommends a heart worm and fecal test to check for parasites. Dr. Waldie-Torres understands that her clients pets are like a part of their family and spends as much time as needed answering any questions. She makes sure that they have the tools they need in order to make informed decisions and take care of their pets once they leave the hospital. If they have a question, she is always just a phone call away.

Dr. Waldie-Torres is a big proponent of spaying and neutering when owners do not

want their pets to produce litters. She is surprised by the amount of pets she sees that have not had the procedure. This puts the pets at risk of developing certain cancers, said Dr. Waldie-Torres. Females are prone to mammary tumors and uterine infec-tions and males can get prostate disease. It is so important for their health and helps prevent unwanted litters. She is so passionate about it that she has been working with the Cat Network to provide low cost spays and neuters for stray cats to help control pet overpopulation. She also plans to align herself with other rescue organizations.

Dr. Waldie-Torres has also helped connect pets with their owners when someone drops a lost pet at the office. Dr. Waldie-Torres recommends that all pets have a micro-chip implanted. This simple procedure assigns a unique number to the pet which identifies its owner. She has also been known to look for a home for an occasional pet that is unwanted or rescued. She is currently trying to find a home for Eva and Glade, two kittens that were rescued from the Everglades.

Palm View is open Mon. to Fri., from 8:30 to 6 p.m. and Sat., from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 954-443-4888 or visit Palm View on Facebook at facebook.com/palmviewvet.com or Twitter @palmviewvet.

    legally speaking

So far, two large law firms in South Florida have been forced to close their foreclosure practice as a result of claims and court decisions that these firms provided false information in order to improperly repossess properties on behalf of their lender clients. As a result of the actions by these firms -- which led to their demise new tools have emerged to successfully defend residential mortgage foreclosures.

Forensic mortgage auditA forensic mortgage audit involves an in depth analysis of the loan transaction by a lending compliance expert to uncover violations of federal and state lending laws committed by the original lender. These violations may even be attributable to the current lender under certain circumstances. If presented in a timely manner, the findings from a forensic mortgage audit may be used to aggressively defend a foreclosure action, to offset and reduce the amount owed on the loan obligation, and to even negotiate a worthwhile modified or restructured loan.

securitization analysisDuring the real estate boom from 2003 to 2007, many lenders sold groups of mortgages in securitized pools to investment trusts on Wall Street. These trusts were created as investment tools that allowed lenders and investors to receive highly preferential tax treatment. In order to receive these tax benefits, however, strict regulations had to be followed. A securitization analysis by a qualified and credible firm can reveal whether an individual loan transaction was properly and timely transferred to a valid trust, i.e., was the loan properly securitized. If the loan obligation is proven not to have been properly securitized, an investment trust cannot foreclose.

transfer history analysisEven if the loan is not part of an investment trust, many loans have been sold multiple times. Each time a loan was sold, certain legal transfer requirements had to be fulfilled to legalize the transfer and to allow the new transferee to foreclose, if necessary. A transfer history analysis tracks the mortgage from its originator to the true current legal owner and holder of the obligation, and also identifies any breaks in the transfer chain which could prevent the current lender from foreclosing. In some cases, this analysis has uncovered that certain lenders even forged mortgage assignment docu-ments through the use of so-called robo-signers to overcome transfer issues, which led to findings of fraud and the cancellation of the mortgage debt altogether.

Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled Fight for Your Home. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com.

M iramar High Schools Band Director Alvin Davis is focused on much more than just music. Since starting at the school in 2003, Davis estimates that has had the opportunity to influence more than 6,000 students and he has done everything he can to make a difference in the lives of each one of them. Davis was recently recognized for his efforts when he won the 2012 Macys/Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year Award.

Davis received a $10,000 grant funded by the Macys Foundation and awards from Macys including an all-expense paid trip for four to New York City to attend the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade. He will also serve for one year as the Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for education, touring the state to spread the word about educational opportunities and challenges in the Sunshine State.

Music is just a small part of what Davis teaches. In fact, he places more emphasis on academics and discipline than musicality. When academics and discipline are in place, musicality occurs naturally, said Davis. He has made it his mission to ensure that as many students as possible attend post secondary education. He also wants to make sure that all of his students have the skills they need to be successful at whatever

career path they follow. He recognizes that most students will not chose a music-related career and points out that so far only one of his graduates has become a band director. He runs the band like a business organization and he plays the role of CEO. He has 40 student leaders or managers and expects the rest of the band members to treat them with respect.

His approach seems to be working. In the past 4 years, every senior that has been a regular participating member of the band has been accepted into some form of post secondary education. In addition, the schools music depart-ment has consistently received superior and excellent ratings from the Florida Bandmasters Association during com-petitions at the state and district level.

It was selected to play in The Music Man and Cirque Dreams when the Broadway musicals performed in South Florida. It also played during the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl. Davis former students come back year after year to visit and encourage his current students to keep working hard. Many of them return during homecoming, when they have an opportunity to play in the alumni band.

Miramar High Schools Band Director Alvin Davis (center) is Teacher of the Year.

Four students at Pembroke Pines Charter High School won the 2011High School Severe Weather Awareness Week public service announcement video contest, sponsored by theFlorida Division of Emergency Management. Joseph Engelman, Alfonso Duran, Christopher Taylor and Paul Capone created an informational video on how to prepare an emergency hur-ricane safety kit. As winners of the state award, the students were invited to attend Hurricane Griffin, an emergency simulation exercise held at the Broward County Emergency Operations Center in Plantation.

Every year, the EOC plans and executes a disaster scenario to deter-mine how it would prepare for and handle a strong storm if it were to strike northern Broward and damage or destroy many homes. The students joined the Mayor, City Administrator, key department heads and others who got together to talk about possible complications, alternatives and consequences. We addressed topics like debris management, traffic signalization and disaster housing, as well as how to deal with issues relating to permitting and inspections, saidChuck LanzaDirector

of theBroward County Emergency Operations Center. The students video played continuously as everyone arrived at the simulation. The video was very creative, said

Lanza. The students used comedy, music and action to communicate the message. It is a great way to present the information to young people.

Paul Capone has only lived in Florida for a year and found the simula-tion very reassuring. Its good to know that we have a very professional team helping us deal with any potential crisis, said Paul. Joseph Engelman was also impressed. I gained a new appreciation for all of the effort, prepa-ration, and team work that goes into keeping our community safe, said Joseph. The four students won a trip to Walt Disney World in January to attend the Division of Emergency Managements kick-off event for Severe Weather Awareness Week. They also received recognition from the State, as well as a professional shoot which

will allow their video to be aired statewide.

I n the past several years there have been some changes in family law. Florida has done away with the designation of residential or custodial parent. The Child Support Laws have also gone through some changes with the percentage of overnights needed for a reduction now 20% instead of the previously required 40%. Florida has also eliminated the 25% reduction for day care or after care expenses that the parent who was not directly paying such expense did receive.

As of August 1, there were some additional changes or perhaps clarifications to existing laws. The majority of these changes or clarifications dealt with alimony. Unlike child support, Florida does not follow any alimony guidelines. Each case is based upon the needs and the abilities of each spouse. Length of marriage and the income of the parties; as well as lifestyle enjoyed during the marriage is considered.

Three new factors were added to a judges consideration in deter-mining alimony:

The responsibilities each party will have with regard to any minor children they have in common.

The tax treatment and consequences to both parties of any alimony award. All sources of income available to either party, including income from invest-

    ments held by either party.

In addition to the above changes, the legislature has further defined certain additional terms and presumptions:

Short term marriages are marriages having a duration of less than 7 years. Moderate term marriages are marriages having a duration of greater than 7

years but less than 17 years. Long term marriages are marriages having a duration of 17 years or greater.

Certain categories of alimony were also further defined:

Bridge the Gap Alimony: Can be awarded for no more than 2 years to assist a party in the transition from being married to being single. This alimony will terminate upon the death of either party or the remarriage of the receiving spouse. In addition, this alimony cannot be modified in either amount or duration.

Rehabilitative Alimony: Can be awarded to a spouse to assist in establishing the capacity for self support through education, training, work experience or rede-velopment of previous skills. A defined rehabilitative plan must be part of this award.

Durational Alimony: Awarded when permanent periodic alimony is inappro-priate. This amount may be modified or terminated based upon a substantial change of circumstance, but the length of this form of alimony cannot be modified absent exceptional circumstances. This term cannot exceed the length of the marriage.

E xcitement is in the air at the international Dance acaDemy as it prepares for yet another spectacular season . the studio certainly raised the bar last year . not only did its annual production of The Nutcracker ballet sell-out, but its spring performance of Copplia received standing ovations . even more impressive, two of its students are now busy preparing to compete at the world Olympics of ballet .

One of the reasons the International Dance Academy (IDA) is so successful is its incredible staff led by Artistic Director Deborah Buttner and Co-Director Mary Buttner. These ladies are highly respected dancers, teachers and choreographers with strong classical ballet backgrounds.

Deborah is a graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet program and trained in both England and South Africa. As a professional dancer, she toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. As an instructor, she is qualified in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods.

I believe demonstrating the most demanding classical techniques and variations is essential to inspiring and correctly training students, explains Deborah, whose first teacher was her mother Mary.

In addition to the Buttners, IDAs international faculty includes Eriberto Jimenez, a soloist with the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami, and Shaina Kaim, a graduate of IDA who returns as an accomplished teacher after two years in a professional ballet company. In addition, master classes taught by specialist teachers add excite-ment to the mix.

IDA is one of the preeminent ballet schools in South Florida. Dancers study the acclaimed Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) method. RAD is the most highly-regarded training and examining body for classical ballet in the world, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. Dancers study a defined curriculum and must pass a series of examinations satisfying the extraordinarily high standards of the RAD in order to be awarded internationally recognized certification.

Whether dancing for fun or pursuing a dance career, the Royal Academy of Dance credential puts our dancers at a great advantage, states Mary. They also gain the confidence and the great satisfaction of knowing they met

the most rigorous standards in dance. The International Dance Academy is the only studio in South Florida offer-ing this prestigious academic program.

The IDA students have performed extraordinarily well. Of the 30 dancers entered in the grades three, four and five levels of the RAD examination, 27 received Distinction. Eleven of the dancers scored 90% or higher, with two earning a 98%, and one dancer, Seoyeon Kim, scoring an unheard of 100%.

Even more impressive, two of the schools elite dancers, Haylee Levin and Abbey Kay, scored so well on the RAD final examination that they have qualified to compete at the Gene International Ballet Competition, one of the most competitive ballet events in the world. It will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, in October.

The Gene, as it is informally known, is considered the Olympics of ballet. It is the ultimate level of competition for an amateur classical ballet dancer. Typically only 30 to 35 ballerinas from around the world qualify each year. It is unprecedented to have two dancers from Florida, let alone the same ballet company, meet the high standards of RAD. In the last 90 years, only one other dancer from Florida has qualified to represent the United States at the Gene.

While IDA has certainly proven it is South Floridas premier ballet school, it also offers a complete menu of dance classes for all ages. Fall classes, which begin on August 22nd, are offered six days a week for all levels of dancers. Class choices include Ballet, Creative Movement, Pointe, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern and Lyrical. Also offered is the popular TuTu Cuties, a mommy-and-me style class for two and three-year-olds. For adults, the

studio offers classical ballet classes at beginner through intermediate levels. The studio is also home to the Jazzercise adult exercise program.

Young dancers who want to kick-start their dance year can register for IDAs one-week Summer Intensive Program taking place August 15-19th. According to Deborah, the stretching, strengthening and technique classes will shake off the cobwebs and get dancers ready for the fall classes or to audition for The Nutcracker. The open audition is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th.

We welcome auditions by dancers who want the experience of dancing in a full-scale professional pro-duction at a major performing arts theater. We have roles for all ages and skill levels, from the tiniest mouse to the exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy, says Deborah. We like to inspire our young dancers through the challenges, excitement and learning that come with performing in a spectacular full-length theater production.

The 12th season of the spectacular Nutcracker will be performed December 9-11th at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Dancers will perform five shows during the three day run which includes the popular Sunday matinee followed by Meet Clara and Friends.
