In 2015 Jackie will release her sixth studio album, The Spyglass & The Herringbone, a record exploring lesser known but life-affirming songs from the English tradition,

drawing on material dug from the archives, as well as some carefully selected original works including the title track by band member Chris Sarjeant.

Production credits include Afro Celt Sound System/The Imagined Village's Simon Emmerson and multi-BBC Folk Award nominee Ben Walker and Richard Evans, who also produced Jackie’s previous albums Lullabies and Saturnine. The album features performances by names from folk and mainstream music including Jim Moray, Andy Gangadeen, John Parker and Jack Rutter. Jackie Oates is a singer and fiddle player hailing from Staffordshire. Her unique treatment of English ballads and songs, and pure, haunting singing style has established her at the forefront of the new English folk revival.

Since appearing as a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2003, she has performed extensively at festivals and venues across the country and beyond, in a solo capacity and with her band. She was a founder member of Northumbrian group and Mercury nominated Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, Jackie is now a permanent member of the folk super-group The Imagined Village as well as touring in her own right.

Gazpacho were formed in Oslo in 1996 by childhood friends Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen along with Jan-Henrik Ohme (later joined by Mikael Krømer, Lars Erik Asp and Kristian Torp) and released their debut album 'Bravo' in 2003. He has also retained the vibrancy and spirit of the source material. Since joining Loose Tubes at the age of 20, Julian Argüelles has become an internationally acclaimed and influential musician. His most recent accolades include a Parliamentary Jazz Award nomination for his 2014 album Circularity and a place on the BASCA shortlist for his composition Hocus Pocus. He has worked with a long list of international artists including Hermeto Pascoal, Dave Holland, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, John Abercrombie and Bill Frisell. Let It Be Told also emphasises some of these longstanding musical relationships, including with his brother Steve (drums and percussion) and with Django Bates, a pivotal member of Loose Tubes and prominently featured here. Ashley Hutchings' Big Beat Combo's instrumental album Twangin' 'n' a-Traddin', originally released in July 1994. It is now 'Revisited' with the addition of three songs that expressively

recall the pre-Beatles' era and the sentiments of the teenage Hutchings simultaneously discovering rock 'n' roll and girls.

In simple terms, Twangin' 'n' a-Traddin' paid homage to a long-gone age of pop music during the late 50s and early 60s when the Top Twenty of the day would always feature a number of instrumental hits. Twangin' 'n' a-Traddin' accordingly presented rock 'n' pop instrumentals with traditional playing alongside folk tunes and a handful of Hutchings' originals which were given rock 'n' roll arrangements and sensibilities. The approach was also evident in the choice of musicians who played on the album. Some of Hutchings' regular sidekicks including Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Phil Beer and Simon Care were joined by genuinely legendary session men of the 60s, notably guitarist Colin Green, best known as a member of Georgie Fame's Blue Flames and drummer Clem Cattini who played on so many of Joe Meek's classic productions. A series of coincidences followed that put Hutchings in contact with The Velveteens – three teenage Yorkshire lasses who, out of school, dressed, sang and performed just like the vocal groups of the late 50s/early 60s. The girls recorded two newly written songs - 'The Boy With The Red Guitar' and '(As I) Walked Out One Morning'. Inspired by the actions of a group of Stockton residents who chased a Benefits Street film crew from their doors, Another Man's Ground sees the trio celebrate their working class roots in trademark harmony and maintain their commitment to social commentary

with striking songs like The Streets of Lahore - relating the brutal 'honour killing' of Farzana Parveen in Pakistan in 2014.

Other original compositions from group songwriter Sean Cooney have their roots in the First World War including the tale of the soldier whose moving message in a bottle was fished out of the sea 85 years after his death and delivered to his ageing daughter (Private Hughes) and the story of the German sergeant who came to the rescue of a British soldier serving him bread and wine in a shell hole in 1915 (Brewster and Wagner).

Eight of the tracks are unaccompanied including a striking version of Billy Bragg's classic Between the Wars and the beautiful Tenting Tonight which weeks after its original publication was being sung by soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. The album was produced by the acclaimed Andy Bell (Spiers and Boden/The Full English).

an array of jazz, world music, hip-hop, and electronic elements with his Afro-Cuban roots. Omar's recording, ‘Ilé’, marks a homecoming for the 7-time GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer to the Latin Jazz influences of his formative years in late '80s and early '90s Havana.

Joining him on the project are three musicians with whom he shares a close connection: fellow Camagüeyanos, Ernesto Simpson on drums, and Leandro Saint-Hill on alto saxophone, flute and clarinet, and Mozambican electric electic bassist Childo Tomas - collectively known as Quarteto AfroCubano. These musicians speak the same musical language, using their Cuban and African traditions as a springboard for creative freedom. Special guests on the recording include Cuban percussionist Pedro Martinez, American guitarist Marvin Sewell, Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry, and maestro Eladio "Don Pancho" Terry, patriarch of the Terry family, on chekere. ‘Ilé’ offers contemporary interpretations of some of the classic Cuban musical styles the world has come to admire. After the wealth of string quartets produced by the composers of High Classicism – Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert – the leading figures of Romanticism were somewhat daunted

by the expectations of their public. Felix Mendelssohn achieved a respectable total of six quartets but the three notable composers represented in this program managed only nine between them. Johannes Brahms, in particular, was paralysed by the thought that if he wrote a symphony or a quartet, people would measure it against Beethoven’s mighty creations. He kept a bust of Beethoven in his study and destroyed numerous works which he felt would not stand comparison with those of his hero. Robert Schumann was a slightly different case, who, in 1842 he confronted chamber music head-on: he and Clara studied Haydn’s, Mozart’s and Beethoven’s quartets, playing them together on the piano, and in June and July Robert produced an extraordinarily unified trio of quartets, connected by key but distinct from each other. Hugo Wolf wrote relatively little chamber music, but with the Italian Serenade of 1887, in a few days Wolf produced one of the most delectable miniatures in the chamber literature: this free rondo dances in the most light-footed manner. Mozart’s precocious genius was as a keyboard player and composer, and his father proudly paraded these gifts of his all over Europe; but Wolfgang also played the violin – Leopold’s own

instrument, for which he had written a tutor that was to become famous. Throughout the years he lived at home he was constantly being urged to devote himself more to whole-heartedly to it and scolded for his lack of commitment. It is significant that after he left Salzburg for Vienna in 1781 he did not touch the violin again, and scarcely wrote further for it as a solo instrument. Then suddenly, in 1775, at the age of nineteen, he wrote five concertos within the space of nine months. Together with some of the shorter movements for violin and orchestra – two Rondos and an Adagio – they are issued, coupled with the Sixth and Seventh Concertos (of partial, possibly doubtful authenticity). The original 4-LP set is here released internationally, complete on Decca CD for the first time and includes the original LP notes by Lionel Salter. Fujikawa brings unexpected sparkle to the finale of the Second Concerto. The bass voice (basso, encompassing both baritone and bass in our modern terminology) occupies a special place in Bach’s sacred vocal music. As the two great Passion settings testify, it was the solo bass that represented the vox Christi or ‘voice of Christ’, following an established

tradition in church music. Matthias Goerne is here at his most persuasive and beguiling in three of the Cantatas, with superb orchestral and choral support, and the recording includes two orchestral gems from the cantatas as well. John Power first made his mark on the UK pop scene as bassist with renowned Liverpudlian quartet The La’s. After leaving The La’s, Power formed a new group called Cast. The timing of

band’s emergence was perfect, chiming with the mid-1990s rise of Britpop.

Power finally released his solo debut, Happening For Love, the first of the three full-length albums featured in this box, in June 2003. Producer for the album was John Leckie, whose numerous production credits include Magazine, The Fall and The Stone Roses’ seminal debut LP as well as both Cast and The La’s. With the distance provided by hindsight, John views Happening For Love as representing “the last remnants of the Cast sound”

Released in October 2006, Power’s second solo LP, the stripped-back Willow She Weeps could hardly have been more different from Happening For Love. Ranging from lonesome country-blues, through to infectious and stomping fare, it’s a gutsily authentic, Americana-flavoured LP full of spirit and heart.

Stormbreaker is the third and (to date) last of John Power’s three solo LPs, but while it’s billed as a solo record, it’s actually the sound of The John Power Band firing on all cylinders. Originally released in January 2008, it has become hard to find and expensive to buy. Its reappearance here shows that it’s an absolute gem. Stormbreaker is a glorious extension of the roots-y, neo-Delta

blues-rock sound of Willow She Weeps. It’s full of dirt and grit and remains thrillingly raw. The fourth disc in the box homes in on John and Jay’s stripped-back side project, with seven tracks recorded in December 2014’s The Mariner Sessions. Intimate, acoustic versions of selected songs from Happening For Love and Willow She Weeps sit side by side with previously unreleased tunes including the bouncy Station Master and the wistful, melancholic When Did It Start. In addition the CD includes a spirited Janice Long radio session and several previously unreleased songs from the 2006 Willow She Weeps sessions.

Also included in this box set is a DVD which includes intimate in-studio footage of John Power and Jay Lewis recording The Mariner Sessions, and extended interviews with John Power covering those sessions and indeed his complete solo career.
