When an unsigned band from the American midwest with an age range from fifteen to nineteen earns a spot on “Later with Jools Holland” you know something special is going

on. With each release, anticipation for Radkey’s debut album has been growing. Now the wait is over.

After nearly five years of playing together, hundreds of sweat-drenched, high-octane rock shows and two critically-acclaimed EP’s under their belts, Missouri punk brothers Radkey present the release of their hugely-anticipated debut album, ‘Dark Black Makeup’, produced by Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, The Kills) in San Francisco and Sheffield. The three brothers from St. Joseph, Missouri have evolved a distinctive sound. They started with a punk base and gathered power and tightness with each new tour. Now with the release of ‘Dark Black Makeup’, Radkey reveals a musical maturity beyond their years. On the album, they re-visit two older songs, “Romance Dawn” from the Devil Fruit EP and the single “Feed My Brain”. The other eleven tracks, including the pre-album single “Parade It” are part of the new Radkey repertoire that will be the basis of hundreds of live appearances to come. The band will crisscross North America in the coming year with at least two European visits planned, beginning with a summer 2015 tour that features several major festivals across the region.

ago, Northern Irish writer/musician and adopted Brightonian Brian Bell sat down to write a collection of short stories, having recently published Brighton set pulp fiction novel ‘Die Hard

Mod’ (under the pen-name Charlie McQuaker). One of the new stories, The Unsung Classic, involved an ill-fated band from the early 90’s whose music was heavily influenced by The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape. “Upon completing the story, Brian came up with the idea of making an E.P of what the combo might sound like and releasing it as a ‘benign hoax’, purporting to be the unreleased recordings of a long-forgotten 60s retro band. Featuring Billy Drummond on drums, Javon Jackson on tenor sax and clarinet, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet and Peter Washington on bass. Close your eyes and you can fell a fundamental groove-and-riff formula that is not unlike what Eddie Harris was putting down on "Listen Here" or Herbie Hancock on "Cantaloupe Island".

"Duets" is the first outcome of a fascinating project - an album of piano music played on two pianos. It is a collaboration between Richard Fairhurst and one of his great

influences and mentors, John Taylor.

This scenario was special - given the rare opportunity of interacting with another piano. The result is stunning in terms of sound and arrangement.

The collaboration between Richard Fairhurst and John Taylor began at the Steinway Festival in 2010, where the two musicians first played together. When asked which piano player he would most like to work with, Fairhurst immediately suggested Taylor as a musician with 'a touch and sound that really spoke to me'.

They began by exploring the music of Bill Evans, keen that the project should avoid standards, explore harmony and understatement but also feel more contemporary. Approaching the Evans pieces from an original angle, both players felt an immediate musical connection, using the music as a springboard for their own individual approaches and perspectives. Fairhurst says: 'We experimented with rhythmic ideas, texture and space. Each performance involved extensive rehearsal, and as the approach to the music developed, it began to feel as if this should become a less sporadic and more enduring project'.

it's Steppenwolf. Formed from the Canadian band The Sparrow (including Dennis Edmonton a.k.a. Mars Bonfire), and led by vocalist John Kay, Steppenwolf scored with

"Born to Be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Rock Me" in the space of nine months back in 1968-1969, and hit the charts eleven more times up though the mid-'70s.

Often tagged as a biker band—mostly due to their prominent presence on the soundtrack to Easy Rider—Steppenwolf was actually a socially-conscious, highly political outfit, never more so than on their controversial LP Monster, one of 14 charting albums released by the band over a 20-year period. This ability to enjoy commercial success on both the single and album fronts puts them in a very rare category in the annals of rock and roll; and, unsurprisingly, their albums have been well represented in the CD reissue era. Their singles, however, have largely been unavailable on CD in their original 45 mixes, as the tapes for the singles have long been missing (legend has it Dunhill label chief Jay Lasker discarded all the label's multi-track tapes and mono masters after having deemed them too expensive to store). But, just like on our critically-acclaimed Grass Roots singles set, engineer Aaron Kannowski has, after a worldwide search, rounded up the best sources available and put together a two-CD set that doesn't just include the A and B-side of every Steppenwolf single on the ABC/Dunhill label (including, for the first time ever, a decent sounding "Magic Carpet Ride"), but of every John Kay solo single as well!
