Rock icon Billy Idol will release Kings & Queens Of The Underground, his first new album in almost a decade, on 20th October. The album will be released on Idol's own BFI Records, via Kobalt Label

Services.

Kings & Queens Of The Underground was primarily produced by Trevor Horn, with Greg Kurstin also contributing as a producer to two songs, including the anthemic lead single, "Can't Break Me Down." .The album will arrive close to the release of Billy Idol's highly anticipated self-written autobiography, ‘Dancing With Myself’, which as previously announced will be released worldwide the week of 7th October.

The artwork for Kings & Queens Of The Underground, above, was designed by street artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey. Idol and his band, including long-time collaborator and guitarist Steve Stevens, will launch a European Tour in November, the first of several legs of a world tour that will continue into 2015.

Born in 1955 in Stanmore, North London, Idol was a central figure of the British punk movement. As part of the infamous Bromley Contingent, Idol fronted the pioneering punk band Generation X from 1976 until the band's split in 1981. Determined to break through in America, Idol hooked up with guitar genius Steve Stevens and a legendary musical partnership was forged. Idol has created some of rock's most enduring anthems.

Of the early studio and live recordings that comprise We Are Time, frontman Mark Stewart says "We Are Time is really 'the' teenage Pop Group album. It's full of defiance and the material demonstrates the band's staunch independence and our really early DIY ethic before the studio became another instrument." Guitarist Gareth Sager explains that the band was "trying in an inexplicably naive manner to combine Patti Smith's Rimbaud ramblings, James Brown, the Stooges, Roxy Music, T. Rex and classical aleatoric music. You can hear the results of this on tracks 'Genius Or Lunatic', 'Colour Blind', 'Trap', 'Sense Of Purpose', 'Kiss The Book' and 'We Are Time." Batida is to release his new album "Dois" via Soundway Records. Strands of Afro-House, Kuduro, Benga, Semba, samples from old Angolan movies

and Afrobeat tracks, African MCs and musicians from all over the world are all deftly mixed together by Pedro Coquenão.

Inspired by the multicultural hotbed of his home city of Lisbon and trips to Nairobi and Luanda, 'Dois' was predominately produced in his own garage-studio over a two-year period. In 2012 Batida's explosive self-titled debut came out on Soundway Records. Mixing the syncopated rhythms of Kuduro with elements of 1970s Semba and Congolese-influenced guitar licks, Pedro Coquenão won fans for an album that "demanded movement" (The Line of Best Fit) and "gave a view of the old and new, the West and Africa." (The Guardian) Much of the remix and sampling spirit from the first record remains but 'Dois' also features live instrumentation along with a host of different guests. English, Portuguese, Quimbundo and Zulu languages all feature on 'Luxo' with Spoek Mathambo (South Africa) & his crew contributing the lyrics together with Angolan MC Sacerdote and a guitar riff by Duncan Lloyd (Maximo Park). On 'Céu' Coquenão pushes things in a deeper direction, dis-assembling and reforming elements of the Francois & The Atlas Mountains studio sessions of the track 'Les Plus Beaux' . His widely acclaimed live show, featuring dancers, MC's, visuals and live electronics has seen him perform at Africa Express and on the Ten Cities project, live on the Boiler Room and all across Europe at some of the biggest festivals. Simo Lagnawi, a charismatic Maâlem (Gnawa master musician) from Morocco, is considered to be the leading exponent of Gnawa music in the UK today. Seamlessly infusing his Berber origins with deep gnawa grooves, his trance-inducing music is an

unstoppable expression of freedom and liberation. The tracks on this album leap from Saharan folk songs to those of the Hausa and Bambara. Simo employs the trance-inducing state of gnawa to summon the likes of forest spirit Sandiye, who is called for on “Sandika”, and Abdelkader Gilani who is invoked on the track “Gilani”- he guards the door to the spirit world. Traditionally gnawa music - along with ritual singing, poetry, healing and dance - is played at lilas, all night celebrations that call upon ancient spirits. On “Malo” Simo narrates his own life journey, from musical wanderer to London’s very own gnawa maâlem [master] supreme. As part of his quest to bring Moroccan culture to the UK, Simo has also kickstarted his own ‘School of Gnawa’. 2013 Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Manuel Valera is a powerhouse who has taken New York by storm since relocating there from his native Cuba in 2000. Valera's maiden voyage

Dr John - Anutha Zone & Duke Elegant £7.99 EDSK7076 740155707637 CD2 EDSEL ROCK/BLUES By the end of the 90s, Dr John was again embracing the mysterious bubbling gumbo of his Gris-Gris era, which was music to the ears of a generation of younger British musicians such as Paul Weller (who had covered “I Walk On Gilded Splinters” in 1996), Gaz Coombes of Supergrass and Jason Pierce of Spiritualized. While Pierce is credited with producing two tracks here, the lion’s share of Anutha Zone was helmed by UK producer legend John Leckie. Although much of the album was recorded in New York in 1998, six tracks were recorded at Abbey Road, with guest appearances from the UK stars above The following year saw Dr John pay his respects to the music of Duke Ellington – like he says: “Doesn’t sound like these tunes were written by a hundred year-old cat, but they were.
