The goods are transported to the docks accompaniedby a shipping note. The note is handed to thesuperintendent of the docks, advising him that the

goods are to be shipped. This note gives details ofmarks, references, number and description ofpackages, weight, and port of destination. Eachpackage making up a shipping consignment must bedistinguished by the so-called leading markwhich is

necessary for identification of the goods. All relevantdocuments must also bear this mark.

The shipping note is signed by the wharfinger andreturned to the shipper (consignor), confirming that

the goods are stored and awaiting shipment. This is adock receiptor a wharfinger's receipt. The shipperthen lodges bills of lading with the shipowner oragent. argo is loaded aboard ship under thesupervision of the chief officer or cargo officer. !ncethe goods are on board the ship, a mate's receiptmaybe sent, acknowledging that the goods havebeen loaded. The mate"s receipt serves as adocument of title until the bill of ladingis ready.

The bill of lading (#$%) is the most importantdocument in shipping as it is a document of title, i.e.gives ownership of the goods to the person named onit. A shipped bill of lading means that the goods

have been loaded on to the ship. &n c.i.f. and c. ' f.transactions the words "freight prepaid" are used tosignify that the costs of shipment have been paid. &fthe cargo is in good condition and everything is inorder, no endorsement will be made on thedocument, and it can be termed a cleanbill oflading.

!n the contrary, if the goods are damaged or aportion of the consignment is missing, the documentwill be suitably endorsedby the master or his agent, and the #$% will be considered claused orunclean. This statement protects the shippingcompany from claims that they were responsible forthe damage or bad condition of the consignment.

A bill of lading names the port of acceptance andport of delivery. &n this case the shipping company

only accepts responsibility for the goods while onboard ship. #ut if a combined transport B/Lisused, the place of acceptance and place of deliverymay be covered, which means the company accepts

door-to-door responsibility, which offers moreetensive cover than the bill of lading.

A vessel can be hired through a shipbroker who will finda ship owner who is prepared to hire his vessel on eithera voyage charter, or time charter basis.

Voyage charter charges, i.e. taking freight from port A to#, are calculated on the tonnage value of the cargo. +or

eample, if an eporter ships tons of coal at /0.1per ton, he will pay /2. for the charter.

Time charter chargesare calculated on the tonnage ofthe ship (i.e. the weight of the ship) plus running costs ofthe vessel, ecluding wages. 3o the larger the ship, themore the charterer pays, regardless of whether s$heships tons or , tons. There are also mixed

charters combining both time and voyage charters. The contract signed by both parties is known as a
