Happy Holidays!

Thank you to the sponsors, instructors, speakers and those who attended our November meeting!

The evening started with our design class instructors, Mike Melaragni and Paul Baker, with the second design

class which reviewed Common Vents. The series will con-tinue at our next meeting, on December 16th, with the topic “Horizontal and Vertical Wet Vents”. Each design class pro-vides a valuable opportunity to expand your knowledge of vent design and the related Michigan Plumbing Code requirements.

The topic for our first hour of the November technical ses-sion was Commercial Kitchen Drainage. Our presenter, Joshua Nelson R.S., holds the position of Senior Public Health Sanitarian for the Oakland County Health Division.

During his presentation, one item reviewed was the plan review forms required by the Health Division for a new or renovated food service facility. These plan review forms require information such as plumbing cross-connection methods and hot water usage requirements. The hot water usage is calculated using a formula by MDARD (Michigan Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development) to ensure that the water heater provides the minimum energy input and storage capacity required for the fixtures within the facility.

The Food Establishment Plan Review Worksheets for Oakland County can be found by following the link below:http://www.oakgov.com/health/Pages/info_pub/eh_food_planreview.aspx

The importance of backflow prevention and prevention of cross-connections was also discussed. Various methods of backflow prevention, ranked from highest to lowest, are: Air Gap, Reduced Pressure Principle Backflow Preventer (RPZ), Pressure Vacuum Breaker/Spill Proof Vacuum Breaker, Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker and Vented Double Check. Each method was reviewed citing the applicable ASSE stan-dard and types of equipment utilizing the various methods as well as installation requirements.

Several types of equipment were identified that do not require external backflow prevention due to acceptable internal air gaps. A few examples of these are: Bunn Coffee and Iced Tea Machines, Bloomfield Series 8500 Coffee Machine, Glasstender Dish Machine (GT-18, 20, 34). It is recommended to confirm with your local code official prior to proceeding without backflow prevention to ensure that the equipment is installed properly.

Additional Food Safety Resources can be found at the following link:http://www.oakgov.com/health/Pages/program_service/eh_food_relatedlinks.aspx

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Nelson at (248) 424-7095 or [email protected].

Our second hour of the November technical session was led by speaker Calvin Rogler, Chief of the State of Michigan Elevator Safety Division. His discussion was on the recent Michigan Elevator Rule updates, which can be downloaded, free of charge, at the following link: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/lara/lara_bcc_eleva-tor_code_rules_2010_print_version_459311_7.pdf

One specific topic discussed was the requirement for oil separa-tors. This requirement is not found in the Michigan Elevator Rules; instead, the document references the Michigan Plumb-ing Code. In Section 1003.4 of the Michigan Plumbing Code an exception is allowed to provide an approved alarm system in lieu of an oil separator. The State of Michigan has now approved of two products which meet this exception:

1.) Stancor Oil Alarm Systems with Oil Separation Technology http://www.michigan.gov/documents/lara/lara_bcc_product_approval_1644pa_430226_7.pdf

2.) See Water Inc, Liquid Pump Systems Model OSSIM-30-OR and OSSIM-30-OR-2http://www.michigan.gov/documents/lara/lara_bcc_product_approval_1646pa_446077_7.pdf

Another notable discussion point, were the revisions to the Elevator Rules in July 2014, which included rescinding Rule 408.7035. Previously, this rule was amended Section 2.8.3.3 of the ASME A17.1 code requiring the fire protection sprinkler systems serving elevator hoist ways and machine rooms to have electronically supervised, accessible shut-off valves.

The July 2014 update rescinding Rule 408.7035 requires that elevator installations conform to ASME A17.1 Section 2.8.3.3, unamended. This removes the minimum requirement for elec-tronically supervised, accessible shut-off valves, however, they may still be provided based on individual owner requirements.

Any questions regarding the Michigan Elevator Rules shall be directed to Mr. Rogler at (517) 241-9337 or [email protected].

Our December technical session will cover two topics, Emer-gency Fixtures and Scald Prevention. Additional information and registration for the Design Class on Venting and Technical Sessions can be found using the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/aspe-emc-december-2014-tech-nical-program-registration-14555450745

5 ASPE News - Eastern Michigan Chapter

Consultant ReportJohn Nussbaum, IPP, FASSE/ASPE

Prior to the ASSE Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City, the Michigan Chapter held its election for the 2015 officers & directors to the board. This was carried out by sending the membership an email ballot with a slate and a place for write in candidates to fill the positions. Out of 95 ballots sent out only a dozen replies

were received. This is sad, how in the world will new younger people with new ideas and direction reach you, the membership, if you fail to vote and bring them on board? What makes a good prospect for becoming an officer/director and leader, persons who are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and co-operative? You know these types of people; they are easily recognizable by their attitude and leadership skills. As your past presidents and the older members of the board are retiring and/or leaving, it is you the stake holders who are empowered to bring on the personnel changes needed to keep the chapter board vibrant and productive. The Michigan Chapter’s future rests with you, the membership. The elected Michigan Chapter 2015 Board of Officers & Directors are: Dennis Matthews, President; Esteban Cabello PE, Immediate Past President; John Nussbaum IPP, FASSE, Administrative

Secretary; Dennis Matthews, Treasurer; and Directors, Paul Baker CPP, Mark Fine, Ronald George CPD, Dann Holmes, Barry Pines CPD & CPP, William Weidendorf, CPP, Cindy Zatto, Paul Bladdick, FASSE, CPP (Honorary Member of the board) and News Letter Editor Theresa Green.

Michigan Chapter members of ASPE! You are commended for your ability in recognizing and electing those who possess the leadership qualities and skills needed to keep your board from becoming complacent, but rather keeping them enthusiastic, dedicated and forward thinking in caring out their duties as outlined in the ASPE Chapter Officers P & O manual. The 2014/2015 elected board of officers and directors has the desired makeup of the talented young as well as the experienced veterans of this industry and, it is a consensus group of the plumbing industry. This board is as good as any I have been part of from the past and is sure to leave its mark as one of the best going forward. I can honestly predict that there will be some future ASPE EMC leaders at the national board level including the presidency.

I wish all of you a Happy Holiday and/or Merry Christmas as we close out the year and begin a new year. ”Happy New Year!”

We all have so much to be thankful for. Some of you are hunters and recently bagged your trophy deer; congratulations. Most of us spent quality time with our families and friends over this past Thanksgiving Day break. Some used a design tip they recently learned by attending their local ASPE Chapter meeting that got them through the final

stage of a plumbing design project.

I think it’s safe to say we’re all thankful for the last 4 years of dedicated service Jim Kendzel gave to ASPE. I was fortunate enough to speak with Jim at the recent PMI (Plumbing Manufacturers International) Fall Conference in Chicago, IL. We wish him the best in his new role as Vice President of Certification at the American Health Information Management Association. www.ahima.org.

The PMI Conference was well attended by many industry notables involved in the manufacturing of plumbing fixtures and/

or their components. As well as media and certification bodies.

The conference started with an Executive Panel Discussion featuring key representatives from Bradley, Delta Faucet, Kohler, Moen, Symmons, T&S Brass and TOTO. Bill Kurtis, acclaimed documentary host, producer and broadcaster moderated the event.

We also heard from PMI Consultants who closely monitor what legislative action is taking place in Washington D.C. and California. We know this will eventually affect each and every one of us. Be sure to read the many articles that are sure to populate your upcoming monthly plumbing magazines.

Not only was I thankful to have attended PMI but I was also equally fortunate to attend the PPI (Plastics Pipe Institute) Semi-Annual Meeting in Southlake, TX. It was here I learned about the many opportunities there are for plastic piping systems.

PPI has numerous divisions. There is the Building & Construction Division; they just completed the PEX Design Guide 2nd Edition. It’s available for download www.plasticpipe.org/publications/pex_handbook.html. Be sure to add this to your document library. It contains everything you’ve ever wanted to know about PEX, including things you’ve never thought of.

There is also the Conduit; Corrugated; Energy Piping Systems; Municipal & Industrial Divisions as well as the Technical

• The Aurora Pump 3800 Series is a single stage end suction pump with a standard, stainless steel impeller making it a cost-effective solution for today’s liquid handling needs

• The 3800 boasts of superior efficiencies and increased application coverage with larger pump sizes, and the tougher, stainless steel impeller will last longer on the job no matter what liquid is applied.

• The 3800 comes into two models: the 3801 Close Coupled and the 3804 Flexible Couple-Frame Mounted with capacities up to 4200 G.P.M. (954 m3/hr), heads to 520 Feet (180 Meters) and temperatures to 300°F (149°C). Some of the additional features include four, larger power frame sizes allowing contractors and engineers to choose the 3800 for a wider variety of projects and applications. The variety of frame sizes ensures customers will find the ideal-size pump to handle the requirements of their specific.

• Many current industrial and commercial installations in eastern Michigan. Please inquire within Kerr Pump for additional details or assistance in a selection.
