Friendship takes on a special relationship among soldiers, es- pecially those involved in the life or death struggle of combat oper- ations. Each soldier looks to his comrades for support as they en- gage the enemy in hostile action. The bond created from those spe- cial relationships can last a life- time. For the 42nd year, Richard Strobel’s mortar platoon gathered for a reunion, this time at his farm in Concordia. The story began in 1967. Stro- bel and his buddies were drafted into the Army. After basic and in- fantry training, they were shipped to Vietnam where they were as- signed to the 4th Platoon, Delta Company, 6th Battalion, 31st In- fantry Regiment of the 9th In- fantry Division. Their area of combat for the next year would be south of Saigon in the Mekong Delta, an area full of rivers and swamps. Strobel said, “For that year in Vietnam, my feet were seldom dry.” Strobel’s unit was attached to the Mobile Riverine Assault Force. The platoon’s primary function was to lob 81-mm mor- tars into enemy positions. At times, his unit went aboard spe- cially constructed boats that oper- ated on one of the rivers in the delta. The mortar was an effec- tive weapon as its explosive power was devastating if it hit an enemy position. Life out in the Mekong Delta was never comfortable. Operat- ing in grass as tall as a soldier, deadly ambush from the enemy was always a threat. Strobel said, “We didn’t have to worry about cold weather, the temperature was almost always about 100 degrees.” Blood-sucking leaches — the scorn of the American soldier in Vietnam — and mosquitoes were always harassing the platoon. To get rid of them, the men burned them off with a lighted cigarette or used what was known as “bug juice.” Even after removal, the leeches left their claws imbedded in a person’s skin. The war in Vietnam was fought with a new weapon — the helicopter. The days of soldiers walking many many miles into battle were over. Whenever Stro- bel and his comrades went into combat, they were airlifted in groups of eight soldiers per heli- copter into the battle area. An- other helicopter called the Cobra was, in reality, a “gun ship” pro- viding fire support to the infantry units. Their enemy was the Viet Cong. The VC wore civilian clothes and blended in with civil- ians. Strobel said, “One had to be care- ful as you didn’t know who the enemy was walking in the vil- lages and who would suddenly strike at an American soldier.” On Aug. 12-14, Strobel and six of his comrades met at his home. The reunion, held every two years, would not be complete without the helicopter that the group rode many times into bat- tle. Strobel arranged a visit to Whiteman Air Force Base, where the Army National Guard‘s 135th Attack Battalion with helicopters is stationed. The group also vis- ited the Whiteman control tower. The reunions of Strobel and his battlefield buddies began when one of their platoon mem- bers, Denny Nester, was hit by a claymore mine. He was severely injured and eventually transferred to Walter Reed Hospital. Mem- bers of the 4th Platoon never got to say good-bye to their wounded comrade. When the group returned to the United States on April 4, 1969, they agreed to meet 90 days later and surprise their re- covering buddy at his home in Eden, Ohio. Nester’s mother was con- tacted and advised of the surprise visit and told not to let him know. Nester was shocked to see them and they agreed to meet once a year. In order to accomplish this, each member volunteered their home and served as host on a ro- tational basis. After 10 years, they agreed to meet every other year. The origi- nal group of eight lost one of their members, Tom Park, in 1994. Many of the deaths of Viet- nam veterans have been linked to Agent Orange. Members of the 4th Platoon remember putting their collars up as airplanes flew over the group on the battlefield spraying Agent Orange. Several of the reunion mem- bers said they grew up and ma- tured from their time in the Army. For the war, Strobel and his comrades felt it was time wasted. The war cost a lot of lives, left several soldiers seri- ously handicapped for life and cost the U.S. billions of dollars that might have been used more effectively elsewhere. People seem to be lessprepared to face stormsThe ability of peo-

ple to bounce back orrecover after a disasteror a personal calamityis nothing short ofamazing. There is suffering

and even death duringsuch events, but thehuman race has theability to be resilientduring the worst oftimes. The problem is we

don’t ever seem tolearn from experiences,so the cycle continues.Originally we were hunter-gatherers; that is,we survived on what we could find aroundus and moved on when that supply ran out.(This allowed the area to replenish itselfover time.)About 30,000 years ago we learned to

cultivate cereal grains and became sodependent on that source of food that wedidn’t pursue or develop other sources. Then 25,000 years ago, there was a mini-

ice age on Earth. Because of the sustainedcold weather, cereal grains would not growand man nearly disappeared.History records these events over and

over. As late as the middle of the 19th cen-tury the potato famine hit Northern Ireland. The potato was introduced to Europe in theearly 1800s from SouthAmerica. It caughton quickly being filling, nutritious and easyto grow. When the potato reached the British Isles,

Northern Ireland, with its rich soils, cooltemperature and frequent rain were ideal forgrowing this tuber. A potato called the“Lumper” became the favorite. After severalgenerations, the local Irish farmers were sus-taining themselves almost entirely on thispotato. In 1845 the potato blight hit and contin-

ued for six years. Unable to adjust their sin-gle-source diet, more than a million peoplestarved to death and a million more immi-grated to the United States.Yet the Irish people and their decedents

thrive today— and still eat potatoes.During one of those hot days this last

summer; I was up in our lane sitting in myGator enjoying a cool one in the shade of thetrees. A hen turkey walked out onto the lane, her beak was open and the skin below was

pulsating in an effort to get cool. Then a squirrel appeared and began forg-

ing about looking for something to eat. Forthe wild critters, the hunter-gathering instinctis still alive and well. The urge to find some-thing to eat requires constant movement. Most animals and birds stash food for the

oncoming dormant or cold season. Thosewho don’t have learned to migrate to greenerpastures or, in some cases, hibernate over thelean period. In the case of the turkey, it has an

uncanny ability to find caches of food storedby others.Deer often change their diets and eat bark

or dig for roots during winter. Such behavioris passed on from one generation to the next.We humans seem to have lost or ignored

the sage advice from the previous genera-tion. It always amazes me that during animpending disaster the first thing to disap-pear from store shelves is water! We musthave water to survive, so why is water notstored ahead of time in disaster-prone areas?I grew up in a period when people raised

a great deal of their own food. The surpluswas canned and stored in a cellar or in thebasement — even meat was preserved thisway. My grandparents were not poor or des-titute — that’s just the way they were raised.Maybe the hunter-gatherer instinct wasstronger back then. The bottom line was, they were prepared. The thing that bothers me today is that it

seems most people depend on the federalgovernment to bail them out when disasterstrikes. Then they move back to the samevulnerable area where they were wiped out.I realize that fishermen must live near the

seashore, and you cannot keep people awayfrom the rich soil in floodplains or the fertileslopes of a volcano. But let’s get real, folks:The rewards must justify the risks. There are the freak acts of Mother

Nature, like Joplin, for example, and thehumanitarian response to that disaster wasinspiring.I heard on the news that most people liv-

ing in NewYork City do not own a car. Sowhy did they not heed the warning givendays before Irene struck and take the trainout of harm’s way?Are we getting too blase about danger

coming that we just don’t pay attention orthink someone will come and rescue us?We may be resilient, but why put our-

selves in harm’s way unnecessarily?

Clean Teeth Are A Key To AHealthier Pet

(NAPS)—There’s good news for pet owners. Improving your pet’s health maybe easier than you realize. The key is better oral health.

It turns out that, much like in humans, better oral health is often an importantbuilding block for more fitness and vitality for your pet.

Here are some tips that can help keep your pet healthier—and its breath fresh-er:

• Be aware if your pet exhibits bad breath, pain around the mouth, swelling orirritation of the gums, bleeding, swelling around the jaw or nose, fever, lethargy, pain when eating or refusing to eat.

• Left untreated, oral disease ina pet can lead to receding gums, tooth loss and infections that couldpotentially infect the heart, liverand kidneys.

• A buildup of plaque on yourpet’s teeth can often lead to moreserious problems. However, eventhe most common treatment cancarry risks.

Until recently, the only way toremove plaque and tartar has beena visit to the vet for a dental clean-ing—a procedure that typicallyinvolves the use of a general anes-thetic. Unfortunately, that can present a problem, since anesthetic reactions cancause injury and even death. It’s estimated that over 50,000 dogs and cats die everyyear, and 1.3 million are injured—some permanently—just from anesthesia.

• As an alternative, many pet owners are looking for ways to remove plaquethat are safer and just as effective, but that don’t require putting a pet under anes-thesia.

For example, PetzLife Oral Care spray or gel is designed to help remove plaqueand tartar, control bacteria and eliminate bad breath—and does not require the petowner to brush a pet’s teeth.

“I have often seen older pets undergo anesthesia for dental cleanings or growthremovals, and they were never the same afterward. Some even developedseizures,” said Susan Maier, DVM. “PetzLife Oral Care has worked on my patientsthat have had severe tartar and gingivitis. Before discovering this product, we hadto perform dental cleanings under anesthesia or resort to keeping the animal onantibiotics. Now we can cure the problem while avoiding the anesthesia and thedrugs.”

The active ingredients are a blend of herbs and oils, including grapefruit seedextract, which is a natural compound often used to kill bacteria. The ingredients aredescribed as 100 percent natural and “human grade,” so they’re considered safe fordogs and cats.

“I much prefer dealing with tartar problems without anesthesia when at all pos-sible and these oral care products are simply the most effective that I have found, short of ultrasonic scaling,” said Joanne V. Baldwin, DVM, Cardinal AnimalHospital.

Many pet owners are finding that remov-ing plaque and tartar from their pet’steeth can help control bacteria, eliminatebad breath and make for a healthier pet.

Q: I saw Nancy McKeon a whileback on Disney Channel’s ‘Sonny Witha Chance’ playing Demi Lovato’s mom,and I wondered what else she has beendoing lately. -- Sally T., via e-mail

A: Nancy currently co-stars in the Hall-mark Channel original movie ‘Love Be-gins,’ which airs Sunday, Sept. 18. Nancyplays Millie, a local restaurant owner andthe heart and soul of the town of Ander-son’s Corner. Nancy told me a main rea-son she took the role: her daughters.‘There are projects I’ve done that are justtoo grown-up for them to see. This was achance for them to make fun of me infunny costumes and funny shoes andfunny hair. They had a great time. Plus, Ilove the stories Hallmark tells, and thisgroup of people were pretty terrific towork with.’

***Q: I love classic Westerns, especially

‘The Rifleman.’ Can you tell me if seriesstars Chuck Connors and JohnnyCrawford are still living, and if so, whatthey are doing? -- Rhonda H., Bounti-ful, Utah

A: Chuck Connors passed away in1992 at the age of 71 of pneumonia stem-ming from lung cancer. His 40-year careerspanned sports (basketball and baseball),film and TV; however, he was best knownas Lucas McCain of ‘The Rifleman.’Johnny Crawford, 65, slowly steppedaway from acting and headed towardmusic. He leads the Johnny Crawford Or-chestra. See what he’s been up to, and ifhe’s coming to your area, at crawfordmu-sic.com.

***Q: As a history buff, I was excited to

read in your column that the HistoryChannel is making a miniseries aboutthe Hatfields and McCoys, starringKevin Costner as Anse Hatfield. Whowill play Randall McCoy? -- Darnell R.,via e-mail

A: I, too, am eager for this miniseries, which is slated to air next year. I'm happyto report that Bill Paxton -- of ‘Big Love,’

‘Apollo 13’ and ‘Twister’ fame -- is set toplay Randall McCoy, the famed archnemesis of ‘Devil’ Anse Hatfield.

***Q: I'm excited that my favorite show,

‘90210,’ is coming back to the CW soon. Can you give me any teasers for thisseason? -- Heidi R., Washington, D.C.

A: ‘90210’ returns for its fourth seasonon Tuesday, Sept. 13. I spoke withMichael Steger, who plays Navid Shirazi, and he gave me the scoop (but not enoughto get him in trouble).‘Navid’s going to be working with Dixon, but Dixon’s no longer working FORNavid. Max and Naomi and the wholepregnancy bomb at the finale, they addressthat in the first episode. Also, Navid’sfamily flies to Switzerland to be with hisfather, but his sister doesn’t get on theplane. Navid does see Adrianna again, andit’s a very awkward situation, but they dotalk in the first two episodes. Also, we’redoing a lot more location stuff. I’m ex-cited because there’s a lot more actiongoing on.’

Page 7: Pln South 09-07-11

At one time or another over the years I’vefished every type of flat water from quarter-acrefarm ponds to the Pacific Ocean and every typeof flowing water from trickles narrow enoughto jump across to the Mississippi River.

So far, I haven’t found a body of waterwhere I didn’t enjoy spending my time, but I dohave a favorite near which I most enjoy whilingaway my time.

I’m (hopefully) at least a ways away fromthe end of a lifelong love affair with creeks. Butwhat is a creek?

This is one of those rare times when NoahWebster, who no doubt fished creeks himself, isno help. My dictionary uses mind-numbing cir-cular logic to define the differences amongbrooks, creeks, streams and rivers.

My approach is simpler. Although I have nointention of disputing the official designationgiven to a particular stream, as far as I’m con-cerned, any at least seasonally flowing water-course narrow enough to cast a baited hook orlure across is a creek.

There are a lot of reasons I love creeks, buthigh on the list is no matter where in the Mid-west I travel, there will always be at least a cou-ple of enticing creeks nearby. Given half achance, you can bet that I’ll pay them a visit.

Another admirable thing about creeks is thatall of them can be fished from the bank andmany of the smaller ones can be waded.

Since the overwhelming majority of anglersdon’t own boats, that’s an advantage that shouldbe exploited far more often than it is.

Meanwhile, fishermen, who prefer the free-dom to explore afforded by boats, will find thatsmall boats and large creeks are a match madein heaven.

No single creek is a suitable place to useevery type of fishing tackle, nor is any singlecreek home to every species of fish a Midwest-ern angler might want to catch.

That said, it’s all but certain that there’s acombination of creeks within an hour’s drive ofwhere you’re sitting right now that offer a rod-waving variety of angling possibilities.

Almost every fan of fly rods and ultralightspinning tackle is already well aware that thecoolest reaches of spring-fed creeks are fineplaces to fish for trout, but relatively few realizethat clear, gravel-bottomed creeks that are a fewdegrees too warm to support trout could pro-vide them with faster action for a wider varietyof species of fish.

I’ll never forget an afternoon a friend and Ispent wading a Lake of the Ozarks tributarycalled Buffalo Creek. We caught several small-mouth and largemouth bass — the creek’sglamour species — but they weren’t the fishthat made the trip so much fun.

It was the dozens of creek chubs, green sun-fish and bluegills that enthusiastically attacked

our flies and mini-jigs.Clear, cool water flowing down a creek has a

powerful natural allure, but most Midwesterncreeks have earthen banks, soft bottoms andwarm water that ranges in color from dingy toopaque.

If ever there was a textbook case of appear-ances being deceiving, these creeks are it. Notonly are they home to a surprisingly wide vari-ety of fish species, but they are also excellentplaces to gather the main ingredient for a fishdinner.

I learned to fish while wielding a cane polealong the banks of a small creek. Sometimes Iwas accompanied by my grandfather or one ofhis brothers, but, on Sunday afternoons, visitsto Pipe Creek were family affairs. Bullheadswere the target species.

Thanks to pollution and siltation, good bull-head creeks are harder to find these days, butthey still exist. If totally laid-back fishingsounds like your cup of tea, finding one isworth the effort.

Larger warm water creeks are less likely tohave large numbers of bullheads, but all ofthem are home to one of North America’s mostedible and most sporting fish, the channel cat.

Other game fish species found in manymedium to large creeks — especially those thatare tributaries of either the Missouri or Missis-sippi rivers — include varying combinations ofwhite bass, black bass, crappie, walleye, saugerand during their spring spawning run, paddlefish.Throw in carp, drum, suckers and other nongamespecies and it’s easy to see why something isalmost always biting in a creek.

I’ve already mentioned cane poles, fly rodsand ultralight spinning tackle, but all three arespecialized equipment. They’re the best choiceonly for a limited number of anglers in a lim-ited number of situations.

For general creek fishing, the spin casting, spinning or bait casting outfit you already havewill do just fine. Hooks, weights, baits and luresshould be kept equally basic.

This is one of those times I’ve saved thebest for last.

Creeks are by far the most underutilizedfishing opportunity. If you like truly gettingaway from it all, go up a creek with a fishin’pole.
