Director’s NotesInvisible Threads explores the joys and limits of theater, the instability
of truth and identity, the complexity of healing, and the mystery of faith.
At least I think it does. I’d be comfortable writing those lines about
somebody else’s play. Describing my own work that way seems a tad, I don’t
know, vainglorious. But looking at the play as objectively as I can, it seems to
me to examine the overlap between the theatrical, the imaginative, and the
spiritual, and the ways in which they all inevitably clash with “reality.”
It asks some big questions—which it doesn’t presume to answer—and is,
I think, as much about relationships and the elusiveness of love as it is about
ultimate mysteries.
The urge to write the play began in graduate school at Stanford, when
I ran across a shaggy, nearly incomprehensible Russian played called
The Main Thing, by Nikolai Evreinov. Although the play struck me
as labored and convoluted (no doubt something had been lost in the
translation), its basic premise was tantalizing, to say the least: a mysterious
figure recruits a bunch of down-at-heel actors to play roles designed to save
people from real-life crises. Indeed, the premise was so superior to the play
that I felt rather strongly that someone ought to write an entirely new play
based on it. And for reasons I’ve never been able to explain, I decided I was
that person. I felt I must, in some as yet-unspecified way, put my own unique
spin on this irresistible story of actors employing their thespian talents to
rescue the afflicted.
Well, a number years passed before I got around to writing it, but the
experiences I had in the interim allowed a very specific story to take shape.
I’d like to thank my chair and colleague, Deborah Rosenberg, for
making this production possible. She asked to read Invisible Threads virtually
the minute I was hired, proceeded actually to do so, (trust me, not everyone
who asks to read your play actually does), professed to like it a great deal
and wasted little time in getting it produced here. And of course I must
thank the amazing students who comprise the cast and crew of Invisible Threads. We had an unusually challenging time putting this show on,
battling through illnesses, injuries, and other unexpected ordeals. At times,
it seemed that life was imitating art—rather too much! I am deeply
grateful to everyone involved in the production for their perseverance,
resourcefulness, and faith in the play.

About the PlaywrightDavid McCandless has been the professor of Shakespeare Studies and
dramatic literature at Southern Oregon University since 2010. His interest
in theatre began in the Southern Oregon area. Spending his childhood in
Eugene and Medford, McCandless frequented the Oregon Shakespeare
Festival growing up. He saw the 1975 performance of The Winter’s Tale with Jim Edmondson playing Leontes. The production and Edmondson’s
performance were “unforgettable,” and spurred McCandless into pursuing
theatre as a career.
While directing has been McCandless’ focus through the years,
he has spent a great deal of time working with texts. Similar to Libby
Appel’s approach to Chekhov’s work, McCandless has worked with literal
translations of classic texts, creating his own adaptations to work with in a
directorial capacity. These adaptations were the gateway to creating original
texts. In his studies, McCandless came across a badly translated Russian
play with a nearly incoherent plot but with an intriguing premise: a bunch of
actors being asked to use their skills to help troubled people. This idea stayed
with McCandless long after graduate school until, following a series of short
original works, he decided to take the idea to paper.
McCandless has long been fascinated with the idea of healing when it
comes to his work. With Invisible Threads, the focus comes to a profession
in theatre as non-rational, with the fleeting nature of theatrical production
taking focus as a group of actors is hired to “change the lives” of a troubled
family.
McCandless’ return to Southern Oregon is a homecoming. His brother
Stephen is the executive director of the Collier Center for Performing Arts
in Medford, for which McCandless has written the playbill every year.
McCandless has also created and written three shows for the Teen Musical
Theatre of Oregon (TMTO), that the Collier Center has produced: Broadway II, A Musical Christmas, and Howlin’ Halloween. On top of creative works,
McCandless has published a number of articles about Shakespeare as well
as a book, Gender and Performance in Shakespeare’s Problem Comedies. After
writing Invisible Threads, McCandless has expressed an interest in returning
to writing new works.

Director’s NotesEdmond Rostand wrote Cyrano de Bergerac in 1897. It was huge in
scale: five full acts with enormous sets, a cast of over seventy actors and
hundreds of costumes. It was immediately a great success in France and was
translated into English, Russian and German.
It became a world classic. It was adapted for film in several versions
and continues to be performed in major repertory theatres and received a
revival in New York City last fall.
It is a fictitious story of real people who lived in Paris from 1640 to
1655.
In the 1990s, a young Belgian named Jo Roet adapted the play for a
small theatre in Antwerp. It used three actors and was shortened to around
ninety mintues and relied on highly theatrical conventions to tell the story. It
is often performed by regional theatres for their young audiences.
Interestingly enough, Rostand had previously written a play in 1894
entitled Les Romanesques –The Romancers. It was this play that Schmidt and
Jones turned into The Fantasticks in the 1960s in New York. That play is still
being performed throughout the world.
Our production of The Cyrano Project has as much to do with theatrical
imagination as with the great story. It distills the action, the language, and
themes within a theatre setting.
We use only rehearsal furniture, sound cues both recorded and created
by the cast, and minimal costumes. The Belgian script gives permission to
those producing it to use more than three actors. So, in a theatre program
with hundreds of students, I chose to use thirteen actors which still keeps it
small and filled with imagination and heart.
The great thing about this program at SOU is the discipline and heart
of all the faculty, staff and students.
– Jim Edmondson

About the PlayCyrano de Bergerac, the most delightful man under the sun! For more
than a hundred years, Cyrano has been a part of theatrical fiction, but did
you know Cyrano used to be a real person? In the early 1600s he served in
the French guards, while also writing comedies in his free time. He spent
most of his time in Paris, studying literature and becoming part of bitter
rivalries with other playwrights. His works inspired a generation of other
writers, including Moliere, Johnathan Swift, and Edgar Allen Poe. While the
lovely Roxanne and clueless Christian weren’t part of his actual life, many
parts of the play Cyrano are very true to the life of the man, including his
ridiculous nose.
While Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand was the first play about
Cyrano ever written, The Cyrano Project is an adaptation, where a playwright
takes an older text and changes it to fit a new kind of audience. The Cyrano Project takes some of the heavier, more dense storytelling from its earlier
version and makes it more dynamic and fun. Cyrano is a bold, energetic
man, and with this new adaptation, children and adults alike can enjoy his
timeless story together!
The Cyrano Project comes from the Laika Theatre Company, which
focuses on “theatre of the senses,” imaginative productions built for families,
filled with color and bold, broad acting styles. The plays produced by Laika
are all classical pieces that find new, creative ways to tell old stories. Jo Roets
serves as artistic director, playwright, and director for the company, which
operates on an international scale. His first production of The Cyrano Project, his own adaptation, featured three actors performing every role while acting
as the three principals: Cyrano, Roxanne, and Christian.
Southern Oregon University’s production expands the cast and spices
up the feeling and intent of Roets’ piece. The SOU theatre program is
excited to present this reworked telling of this classic and historical theatrical
tale.
