Plano Rotary Club
Weekly Update
As we head into August I want to thank several club members for their contributions this past month and let you know about a few things that are on the calendar. To start, special thanks to Kenny Wilson for helping organize and support our efforts for the "Battle of the Badges" blood drive. We had great representation from the club at Elliotts Hardware, Saturday, July 13th. Rotarians who stepped up to help were: Larry Bisno, John Caldwell, Lori Roberts, Geri Hosterman, Cathy Fang and Phil Dyer. We need to do all we can to help Rotary's effort of donating blood throughout the year. I want to thank Skip and Toni Jenkins for hosting the golf outing at Frisco Lakes Golf Club, July 18th. We had twelve players and we played a two man scramble. Congratulations to Bob Pikna and Rick Kasmiskie for finishing with the lowest score (even par). Afterwards, we went to the Jenkins for beer, brats, and other goodies. It was a wonderful get together and we'll organize another one in the fall.
Last week we had our monthly social at Buffalo Bluez. The owner and the staff went out of their way to show us a good time. We plan on going back there soon. The next monthly social will be announced in the weekly update.
Saturday, July 27th, we had six Rotarians from our club work on a local Habitat for Humanity home on 11th street. Luckily, it wasn't as hot as normal for July and we worked in the morning. The handy Rotarians were: Randy Wright, Larry Bisno, Janis Allman, Cathy Fang, and John Caldwell. We were pretty darn good with the caulk guns!

This Week’s Program – August 1, 2013
Jim Lites
President- Dallas Stars
"Growing a Paying Fan Base"
Just to let you know, Dave McWhorter and John Parker have every week booked for programs for the balance of the year. They are doing a wonderful job in planning and they are on top of the logistics. Let them know if you have any suggestions for 2014 and that you appreciate the contribution they are making to the club. Speaking of programs, Thursday, August 22nd, we will have the three local senior high school football coaches speak. To properly kick off the football season, I am asking everyone to wear a jersey, shirt, or hat from your alma mater. It's time to find out if the Longhorns, Aggies, Red Raiders, Sooners, or whoever has the greatest pride in their school. Go Falcons! We have had a lot of guests recently visit our club. Thank you for making them feel welcomed. If you have a friend, or prospective member that we should add to the "Weekly Update" distribution list, please give Lynette their e-mail address. That idea can be a simple, but an effective recruiting tool. Our next club board meeting is Thursday, August 8th, at the Southfork hotel at 7:30AM. Members who are not on the board are welcome to attend. Just a reminder, that new members are required to attend a board meeting as a "red badge" requirement. The meeting usually lasts between sixty and ninety minutes. The next club service project is to go kayak fishing with the local chapter of Heroes on the Water, August 24th. We have enough volunteers at this time. I'll let you know if that changes. Two other future projects in progress are for us to do an international service project and "Angel Tree". Lori Roberts is the project manager for the international project and is working diligently to get it organized. Susan Shuler and Camille Ussery are going to take our "Angel Tree" efforts to a whole new level in December. Thank you! The club is working with Memorial Elementary throughout the school year. We will be making small financial contributions to their early school program and for school supplies. Plano Rotary is holding a School supply drive for Memorial. We will have a collection box at the August 1st and August 8th meetings to collect items from our membership. Sarika Pride, Principal of Memorial Elementary will join us for Lunch on August 8th and we will present her with the collected supplies. Please bring what you can. After Labor Day we will be providing mentors to meet with students weekly for lunch. Please let Earnest Burke know if you would like to be a mentor at Memorial. That little extra time spent listening and guiding those children can make a big difference in their lives. The six Rotary Clubs in Plano are joining forces to host a 9/11 event. It will be Wednesday, September 11th, probably at the Plano Centre (still TBD) in the early evening. The plan is to have light refreshments and an open bar. We are working to a have the price at $10 per person. The program will feature Helen Reisler, who was the Manhattan Rotary Club president the day of the terrorists attack. I heard her speak in March. I promise you that you will enjoy her presentation. The event is open to Rotarians and their guests. There will be more details soon as we finalize the plans this coming week. Please mark your calendars now. The Hendrick Foundation golf tournament is Friday, November 1st, at Stonebriar Country Club. We will need around forty volunteers to work that day, and of course, we need to have as many people as possible to play golf. This is an outstanding charity we support every year as a club. Let's make this our biggest contribution of time and money ever. In closing, this is an exciting time to be a Rotarian, as we are members of one of the finest service organizations in the world. Rotary International President's motto sums it up perfectly: "Engage Rotary...changes lives". Our efforts do make a difference.
Very respectfully, Kirk Bell President, The Plano Rotary Club

What is that Polio Picture?
It's of District 7070's (Ontario, Canada) Birthday Bash for Dr. Bob Scott's 80th

his never-ending commitment to the children of the world through the global
eradication of Polio. Over $200,000 was raised for The Rotary
