Today’s Speaker: Dr Dale Shuttleworth – Training Renewal Foundation (TRF)

Doug told us that our advertised speaker called him yesterday to apologise and tell him he was sick and unable to attend. Luckily, Doug knows more than a couple of people and found Dr Dale Shuttleworth, who was happy to talk about the Training Renewal Foundation (TRF), of which he is Executive Director. The TRF was registered as a charitable organisation in September 1997. It is a non-profit charitable

training organisation which prepares the unemployed for careers in a post-industrial economy based on consumer-related services and knowledge-driven enterprise and globalisation. Dale is a member of the St Matthews Anglican Church Men’s Ministry. Dale’s experience came through his career as a teacher, community worker, school principal, superintendent and university lecturer in (as was) the City of York. Dale has published a number of books on school management & innovation and schooling and the General Educational Development (GED) Test. Dale said that the TRF has established a number of social enterprises. These include Training Interns in Education, which assists recent immigrants who were previously employed as educators in their native lands to resume their former vocations or prepare for alternative careers. From 1995 the GED Preparation Centre pilot project was instrumental in bringing GED exams and the Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (OHSEC) to the province. In 1997 TRF partnered with Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) and Alfa Food Machinery Ltd to establish North America’s first Café Equipment Technician training program, which later developed additional partnerships and helped the unemployed to get training and work. TRF & HRDC partnered with the Ontario Fabricare Association to create the Dry Cleaning & Laundering Training Advisory Committee. In 2001 TRF partnered with the York Catholic District School Board, the York Region District School Board and the Ontario Ministry of Education to found the Your Choice Learning Centre to cater for the needs of expelled students in the region under the provisions of the Safe Schools Act. training programs with the Regions of York & Waterloo and Hewitt Material Handling to train Ontario Works recipients as industrial warehouse workers and lift truck operators. The list of achievements goes on! Newly arrived immigrants, those people thrown out of school and the work system need help to get back into the workforce. The training schemes & organisations that TRF has founded have done that. By working with so many governmental & industrial organisations it has helped individuals achieve their potential. Launched in 2010, the GED Online demonstration project was launched with Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Adult Learning Centre. 85% of the 2000 social security recipients undertook a year’s Internet-based instruction to prepare for the OHSEC, earned by passing 5 subjects to test their literacy & numeracy. Dale thanked Christine & Doug, and our club, for the funding TRF received to give 10 scholarships to students who were unable to claim any provincial or federal support. Dale also mentioned Etobicoke Youth Networks, developed in central Etobicoke. He and the organisations he is involved with have done a lot of work with youth in the area, including through Rathburn Area Youth (RAY). A useful pocket-sized directory, “Power in your Pocket – accessing youth services in Etobicoke” is a popular item. Helping young people to help themselves stops them drifting into crime, drugs & gangs. By helping them to prepare for jobs the whole community is better-off. Here again, our club has been involved in the same drive to help youth to make the right choices. Gary Hepworth thanked our speaker.

Happy Bucks

Nigel Brown– Nigel was happy because he had

received a commitment from the RC of Midland, ON, to donate $1000 to the Genesis Project in South Africa

Lynda Ryder – Lynda announced that Don

needed every penny he could get for the club and emptied her purse as a good example!

Ralph Chiodo – Ralph said he is leaving for Italy,

where next week he will be speaking at our twin club Amantea. His talk is on immigration into Canada

Michael Bell – Michael said he was sad to be

leaving us all behind as he & Jo-Ann head off for their latest cruise around Hawaii. The effect was spoiled by his laugh!

Ken Bromley – Ken said he was happy to not be

in jail. A week ago he had been fast asleep in his bed when he was woken by two police, telling him none of his phones were working. They left him to ponder the meaning of this statement. Next morning he called Bell to ask what the problem was (so at least one phone WAS working) and the doorbell rang – such quick service!

Brock Buchanan – Brock was happy to be

heading off to Tanzania in a few days for 3 – 4 months. Delphi will be following him in a month. He said the fundraising to pay for an operation to straighten the legs of a poor, little girl is going well. And he will be taking some ideas from our club to his at Moshi to liven them up a bit!
