    CAMPUS PLACEMENT 2014-2015

    Placement policy for students

    The Placement Office welcomes all eligible students to take active part in the Placement Process

    during the year 2014-2015. IIT Bombay assigns considerable importance to the Placement Processand extends full support to ensure that all students are given the right opportunity to set their bestcareer path.

    The Institute Placement Team consists of the Professor-in-Charge (PIC), Assistant

    Placement Officer (APO), other staff members at the Placement Office, PlacementManagers, Company Coordinators, Department Placement Coordinators, Associate

    Placement Coordinators, Web Coordinator.

    This team endeavours to see that IITB is consistently ranked among the best in terms of Placement

    results and continues to be the most favored destination for recruiting organizations. This is possibleonly with the assistance and co-operation of all students.

    In order to maximize the sum of the benefits to all the stakeholders, the Placement Policy forstudents has evolved over the years. To realize a win-win situation for IITB and our partnerorganizations, all students are expected to understand the Placement Policy and follow it strictly. Itmay be noted that some policy changes may take place during the year in the best interest of wholebatch.

    The placement policy is applicable to all students registered for the 2014-2015 campus placementsof IIT Bombay (including the ones who may deregister) and is to be followed during the entireduration of the placement season.

    1. Placement Season:

    The placement season started on July 1, 2014 and will continue up to June 30, 2015.

    2. Eligibility Criteria for B. Tech, Dual Degree, M. Tech, M. Sc., M. Des. and M.Phil.students:

    (a) All full-time students who are expected to complete their degree requirement during theperiod April 2015-July 2015 are eligible to register.

    (b) Sponsored, external and QIP postgraduate students are not eligible.(c) International students can register only if they already possess Indian work permit or are

    otherwise eligible to work in India without any work permit.(d) Students can register for placements only once. (Students having to extend their stay at IIT

    because of backlogs/ other constraints might be considered on a case to case basis)(e) Students from earlier batches who are specially permitted as per Deferred Placement Policy.

    3. Categorisation of Organizations:

    The job profiles offered by recruiting organizations are divided into various categories based on the

    gross compensation package as follows:

    C1 11 LPA

    9.5 LPA C2 < 11 LPA

    8 LPA C3 < 9.5 LPA

    6.5 LPA C4 < 8 LPA

    5 LPA C5 < 6.5 LPA

    (d) A student procuring a job in a C4 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA)

    will be allowed to sign extra JAFs only of a C1 or C2 category organization offeringremuneration more than Rs. (x+2.5) LPA as per point 4(g).If the student gets selected in the

    higher-category organization, he/she will become ineligible for the job offered by the lower-category organization.

    (e) A student procuring a job in a C5 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs.x

    LPA)will be allowed to sign extraJAFs only of a C1 or C2 or C3 category organization offeringremuneration more than Rs. (x+2.5)LPA as per point 4(g). If the student gets selected in a

    higher-category organization, he/she will become ineligible for the job offered by the lower-

    category organization.

    (f) A student procuring a job in a C6 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs.x LPA) will

    be allowed to sign extra JAFs of any higher category organization offering remunerationmore than Rs. (x+2.5) LPA as per point 4(g). If the student gets selected in the higher-

    category organization, he/she will become ineligible for the job offered by the lower-categoryorganization.

    (g) Any student who gets 2 jobs during campus placement will not be eligible to sign any more

    JAFs, and the students name will be removed from all other JAFs that the student hasalready signed. The student must accept the higher category job, and both the organizationswill be informed accordingly. This clause is applicable even for students eligible for signingadditional JAFs as per the incentive scheme.

    (h) A student appearing in multiple shortlists in a single interview slot will have to submit his/herpriority list amongst the organizations that have shortlisted him/her. The instructions forproviding the option and its deadline (which will typically be at least one day before the visit

    of the organizations for interview) will be communicated by Placement Office. On receivingmultiple offers, the student has to accept the offer from the organization appearing earlier inhis/her priority list.

    (i) A student completing the specified number of incentive points through participation in

    institute-level and department/hostel-level preparatory activities will get an opportunity tosign additional JAFs (applicable post student has secured his/ her first job). Of the totalincentive points completed by the student, a minimum of 10 incentive points must becompleted through the institute-level preparatory activity to avail the opportunity to sign theseextra JAFs.

    5. Rules for Off-Campus Application:

    (a) Students are strictly prohibited from applying to off-campus organizations except as describedbelow. Students are also strictly prohibited from making any contact with organizations thatare likely to visit or have visited the campus for placement.

    (b) Students who register with the Placement Office are strictly forbidden from applying for off-

    campus recruitment without permission till 30th

    April 2014. Any student who wishes to apply

    directly to any organization must contact the Department Placement Coordinator of his/herdepartment, so that the organization is off icially invited for campus placement. If theorganization is not invited as per the decision of the Placement Office, or is unable to visitIITB for placement due to their own constraints, off-campus application to that organizationmay be permitted at the discretion of the Placement Office. The decision of the PlacementOffice will be binding to the student.

    (c) A student may also directly contact the Assistant Placement Officer or the Professor-in- Charge for permission to apply for apply off-campus placement in case he/she does notwish to disclose the name of the organization to the other members of the placement team.The decision of the Professor-in-Charge will be binding to the student.

    (d) Any student who procures an off-campus job is required to report the same to the PlacementOffice within one working day. He/she shall be permitted to sign JAFs for otherorganizations, as per the rules for signing JAFs given above depending on the grosscompensation package of the off-campus offer.

    (e) Any student found to have applied to or secured a job through off-campus application withoutthe prior consent of the Placement Office, or is found to have directly contacted anorganization participating in Campus Placement will be debarred from taking part in any

    further placement process. Further the organizations to which he/she has applied/secured jobwith will be also informed of the policy violation by the student. The matter may also bereferred to the institute for further disciplinary action.

    6. Rules for Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs):

    (a) All Pre-Placement Offers by any organization, extended to any student, have to beimmediately reported to the Placement Office by the student after registration. This alsoincludes offers extended by organizations that are not participating or are not likely toparticipate in the 2014-15 campus placements.

    (b) All organizations contacted will be also informed about the PPO policy of the institute.

    (c) Any form of intimation from an organization about the possibility of a PPO being granted infuture should be informed to the Placement Office without waiting for the formal offerletter/email. The Placement Office will take up the matter with the organization further andthe student will be allowed to sign JAFs as per normal policy until a decision regarding the

    grant of a PPO is made by the organization.(d) Students should proactively review the terms and conditions for the PPO. In case of any

    difference between the companys terms and conditions and the Institute policy, the sameshould be explicitly brought to the notice of the Placement Office.

    (e) The student will have to accept or reject the offer before the deadline of the organization or

    September 30, 2014, whichever is earlier.

    (f) In case of a PPO being offered after 30thSeptember, 2014, a time period of 1-weekwould be

    given to the student to intimate his choice to the Placement office. Failing to do so,

    Placement Office will assume the offer to be accepted and the below mentioned rules would

    be applicable.

    (g) Students accepting or rejecting a PPO will have to immediately notify the Placement Office of

    the same with a copy of their communication to the organization. If the PPO is accepted, thejob will be recorded, and he/she will be allowed to appear for additional placement

    opportunities as given below.

    On accepting a PPO, the student will be allowed following additional opportunities:

    (i) C1 category PPO job profile Sign 3 more JAFs of and appear for the personalinterviews in the companies for which the student has been shortlisted for.

    (ii) C2 category PPO job profile Sign 5 more JAFs of and appear for the personalinterviews in the companies for which the student has been shortlisted for.

    (iii) C3 category PPO job profile Sign 7 more JAFs of and appear for the personalinterviews in the companies for which the student has been shortlisted for.

    (iv) C4 category PPO job profile Sign 7 more JAFs of and appear for the personal

    interviews in the companies for which the student has been shortlisted for.(v) C5 category PPO job profile Sign 9 more JAFs of and appear for the personal

    interviews in the companies for which the student has been shortlisted for.

    (vi) C6 category PPO job profile - Sign 9 more JAFs of and appear personal interviews in

    the companies for which the student has been shortlisted for.

    (h) Any student who gets a job during campus placement must accept the job offered throughcampus placement, and the student will not be eligible for signing any additional JAFs. Theorganization offering PPO will also be informed accordingly.

    (i) A student with additional opportunities available as per 6(g), on completing the number ofincentive points for participation in the preparatory activities, will get an incentive of signingaddition JAFs as follows:

    (i) On completing 25 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs asfollows:

    1. 1 extra JAF, in case of being offered a PPO by a C4 category organization, inaddition to that specified above.

    2. 2 extra JAFs, in case of being offered a PPO by a C5 category organization, in

    addition to that specified above.3. 4 extra JAFs, in case of being offered a PPO by a C6 category organization, in

    addition to that specified above.

    (ii) On completing 35 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs asfollows:

    1. 1 extra JAF, in case of being offered a PPO by a C4 category organization, inaddition to that specified above.2. 2 extra JAFs, in case of being offered a PPO by a C5category organization, in

    addition to that specified above.3. 4 extra JAFs, in case of being offered a PPO by a C6 category organization, in

    addition to that specified above.

    (iii) On completing 40 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFsas follows:

    (d) A student will be awarded 1 point for participating in an online preparatory activity (lasting

    more than 30 minutes for a normally-prepared student). There are no points awarded to any

    preparatory activity requiring less than 30 minutes. These activities included but are not

    limited to employability enhancement activities such as Aptitude Tests.

    (e) A student will be awarded 1.5 point for attending a buddy talk.

    (f) Any violation (including proxy attendance) will be addressed in the same manner as in PPTs

    and corresponding penalty points will be imposed as given in the Graded Penalty Structure.

    (g) A student who earns 25 or more points will get the opportunity to sign extra JAFs as

    mentioned in Section 4(g) and 6(g) from that day onwards.

    10. Graded Penalty Structure:

    (a) Some unfair/inappropriate activities have been identified as Dark Violations. The penalty

    points and/or other disciplinary action (which might range from hours of community service toa semester drop) for Dark Violation will be decided by the Placement Office on a case-to-

    case basis depending on the severity of the violation. The penalty may range from informing

    recruiting organizations of the violation to suspension from placement-related activities for

    certain duration. In case of Dark Violation after placement, the job offer may be deferred or

    cancelled. The matter may be also referred to the Institute for further disciplinary action.

    (b) Table 1 describes the violations and the corresponding penalty points.

    (c) The penalty points of a student get carried forward even after a disciplinary action has been

    imposed.The following are the disciplinary actions that the student will have to face:

    (i) 10 penalty points: The student will not be eligible for the extra JAFs earned as a part of thepreparatory incentive points.

    (ii) 15 penalty points: The next three organizations visiting campus (and for which student has

    signed the JAF) will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.

    (iii) 20 penalty points: The next five organizations visiting campus (and for which student has

    signed the JAF) will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.

    (iv) 25 penalty points: The next five organizations visiting campus (and for which student has

    signed the JAF) will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.

    (v) 30 penalty points: The next ten organizations visiting campus (and for which student has

    signed the JAF) will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.

    (vi) 35 penalty points: The student will be debarred from the placement process. The matter may

    be also referred to the institute for further disciplinary action.

    (d) The penalty points will be cumulatively added, and the imposition of disciplinary action at anystage will not remove the penalty points from further considerations.

    (e) Appeal against penalty can be made in writing to Professor-in-Charge, whose decision will be

    final and binding. In the period pending the final decision, the organizations will continue to be

    informed of the students attitude and activities resulting to imposition of penalty.
