  • 1. The 2008 Mumbai attacks (sometimes referredto as 26/11) were 11 coordinated shooting andbombing attacks across Mumbai, Indias largestcity, by terrorists who allegedly came fromPakistan. The attackers allegedly receivedreconnaissance assistance before the attacks.Ajmal Kasab later confessed upon interrogationthat the attacks were conducted with the supportof Pakistans ISI. The attacks, which drewwidespread global condemnation, began onWednesday, 26 November and lasted untilSaturday, 29 November 2008, killing 164 peopleand wounding at least 308.

Eight of the attacks occurred in South Mumbai: atChhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the TajMahal Palace & Tower, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital (awomen and childrens hospital), the Nariman HouseJewish community centre, the Metro Cinema, and a lanebehind the Times of India building and St. XaviersCollege. There was also an explosion at Mazagaon, inMumbais port area, and in a taxi at Vile Parle. By theearly morning of 28 November, all sites except for theTaj hotel had been secured by Mumbai Police andsecurity forces. On 29 November, Indias NationalSecurity Guards (NSG) conducted Operation BlackTornado to flush out the remaining attackers; it resultedin the death of the last remaining attackers at the Tajhotel and ending all fighting in the attacks 3. Ajmal Kasab, the only attacker who was captured alive,disclosed that the attackers were members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistan-based militant organisation,considered a terrorist organisation by India, Pakistan,the United States, the United Kingdom, and the UnitedNations, among others. The Indian government said thatthe attackers came from Pakistan, and their controllerswere in Pakistan. On 7 January 2009, PakistansInformation Minister Sherry Rehman officially acceptedAjmal Kasabs nationality as Pakistani. On 12 February2009, Pakistans Interior Minister Rehman Malikasserted that parts of the attack had been planned inPakistan. A trial court on 6 May 2010 sentenced AjmalKasab to death on five counts. 4.
