From 14 to 17 June, Fortezza da Basso is the wonderful venue hosting 1,219 brands/collections, including 536 from outside Italy. Limelight also on eyewear with Eye Pop.

This is the 90th edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo, an important milestone in the history of an event that over the years has become the international benchmark for men’s fashion and the latest trends in contemporary style. The theme Pitti Lucky Numbers says it all: this edition is all about the aesthetic, graphic, and symbolic quality of numbers, in fashion and beyond fashion. Given that numbers secretly surround our entire lives, the entire Fortezza da Basso will be spectacularly populated by numbers with set design by Oliviero Baldini. There will also be a new digital art project to accompany the shows’ advertising campaign, interpreting the theme through the motion design technique. This summer, the event will once again feature eyewear with Eye Pop, the section organised in collaboration with Mido that provides a closer look at the link between glasses and fashion in terms of quality and design. Located on the ground floor of

the Central Pavilion, it has also been conceived to meet requests, on the one hand, from top buyers looking to expand the range of merchandise in their stores and increasingly more attentive to the world of accessories, and on the other hand, from eyewear manufacturers seeking important, stimulating synergy and contamination with the world of fashion. Curated by Alessandro Moradei, this year the section will feature 11 brands (Aird by Aireyewear, Blackfin, Clan, Dandy's, David Marc, Finlay & Co., Morà, Movitra, Siens Eyecode, Pugnale & Nyleve, and Spektre Sunglasses) selected for their DNA, strongly focused on creativity and innovation.Pitti Uomo will also be the stage for a must-see event, with the inauguration on the first day (14 June) of “Karl Lagerfeld - Visions of Fashion”, an exhibition in Palazzo Pitti curated by Eric Pfrunder and Gerhard Steidl that traces the photographic career of the maestro.Pitti Immagine will also be presenting “Florence Calling: Raf Simons”, an event to celebrate the return to Florence of one of the great innovators of contemporary fashion. Raf Simons will be showing his SS 2017 collection together with an event-specific project.Another event that promises to be spectacular will be staged by Cartier, with a glimpse of its male universe in the heart of the city, inside the walls of a fifteenth-century building. It will present its "Drive de Cartier", a stylish watch that teams the evergreen elegance of this Maison with the spirit of independence that makes the Cartier man stand out from the crowd. Finally, the traditional role of Menswear Guest Designer this year is covered by the Russian Gosha Rubchinskiy. His research teams the aesthetics of young cultures in post-soviet Russia with sportswear influence and ideas from photography and films. At Pitti Uomo he will present his SS 2017 collection, together with a previously unseen photographic project. The dates to remember are 14 to 17 June at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence.

Italian brand Malìparmi launched the Virginia bag for AW2015 and now it’s back in a midi version. The essence of the brand is obvious both in shape and manufacture, where craftsmanship and technology have blended completely thanks to sound manufacturing know-how from design to final assembly. Made in soft natural leather in peacock green, bark brown or black, it is flexible thanks to the jersey doubling-folding inspired by Japanese kimonos. Virginia has touches of light on its shiny edges, on the intertwined details on the handles, and on the embroidered tattoo-like rose that has always been a symbol of the Malìparmi story.

The “Perpetual Transience” exhibition by Dutch artist Jennifer Townley will be on display until 11 June at the MB&F M.A.D. Gallery in Geneva. A love for geometry, immense talent in the engineering sector and an interest in the work of graphic artist M.C. Escher have led Townley to see order in a world reigned by chaos. She realises mechanical watches that distort the observer’s perspective with their hypnotic and repetitive movements.

From this idea she creates “Cubes”. This piece of art is made up of structures in the shape of rhombuses that are slowly swung back and forth in such a way that the light, being reflected in different directions, makes them appear as diamonds. In “De Rode Draad”, the red thread is put into movement by mechanical gears that cause it to trace ever-changing designs, while in “Squares”, gear wheels move, creating shapes that materialize and dissolve on a white surface on top of a thinly carved wooden grid.

Post-modern design

On 28 May, the 15th edition of the International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia has been inaugurated. This year edition, called “Reporting from the Front”, is directed by the Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena and involves 88 groups from 37 different countries. Between Giardini and Arsenale, there are six Italians present at the exhibition, from Renzo Piano with the work group G124 to Maria Giuseppina Grasso Cannizzo from Sicily. Among these famous Italian architects there are also international starchitects like David Chipperfield, Norman Foster, Shigeru Ban, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Sanaa, Grafton Architects, Tadao Ando and Peter Zumthor and many others. Along with the exhibition directed by the Chilean architect, there are 63 national pavilions, including the Italian one curated by the TAMassociati studio based in Venice, whose theme was “Taking Care – Designing for the Common Good”.

Feminine and architectural, refined and futuristic, these are the words that describe the collection by Marcwave. A brand with an unmistakable identity and post-modern design, it was created in 2013 by Marco Masetti, a young designer from Tuscany. The collection was entrusted to the expert hands of Tuscany’s master leather goods manufacturers who produced a perfect blend of geometries and contrasting colours. The distinctive symbol of the brand is a stylized diapason, the harmonious introduction to an alluring itinerary though different cultures and languages. Over the years, aesthetic explorations by the creative mind that conceived and founded the brand were instrumental in promoting a corporate mission in which the brand’s creations are seen not simply as accessories, but as an integral part of the wearer.
