While Dr. Wes Avram is taking a three-month sabbatical this summer, Pinnacle will welcome several guest preachers alongside Reverends Brown and Harmon and Dr. Swicegood. This is a great opportunity to hear the gospel excitingly preached by new voices for Pinnacle and make new friends. The Clergy Renewal Program of the Lilly Endowment, which has funded Dr. Avram’s sabbatical, has also provided funding for these guest preachers. Lilly has invested more than $81 million in the Indiana and National Clergy
Renewal Programs, providing grants to more than 2,000 congregations to support renewal programs for their pastors.

My family lives all across the world, from Germany to California, Alaska down to Arizona, and everywhere in between. Even though both of my parents grew up in Montana, everyone in their families moved away as they grew up. But when we all get together you would never know that we only see each other once or twice a year.
Our church has a similar experience. We each come with our stories, adventures, and faith each Sunday to worship and celebrate Jesus as a part of our life. Each one of us is unique, and yet when we get together—we are family. This is the beauty of the Holy Spirit.
We gather because God brought us together and named us Pinnacle Presbyterian Church family. This is a good place, and God is doing amazing things here. As the summer begins and we head off for cooler temperatures—in the pool, off to higher elevations, back home or on summer vacations, I hope you take Pinnacle with you. I hope you pray for each other, keep in touch with what is going on at the church, and grow in your faith, wherever you go.
This year, we hope that you take Pinnacle Pete, our roving “Flat Cactus” with you on your travels. Take a picture or two of you and your family with Pinnacle Pete, found on page 23 in this issue of Vistas, or on the website at http://tinyurl.com/l43f928. Pinnacle Scholarships AwardedThe Pinnacle Presbyterian Church Foundation is proud to announce
the recipients of the 2015 Scholarship Fund Award. This is the fourth year these awards have been made from a fund dedicated to providing Pinnacle students with scholarship assistance.
The foundation deeply appreciates the vision of Sue Larson, Virginia Malmquist, the Ralston family and others whose memorial gifts have made these awards possible. Thanks to the Scholarship Fund Committee: Nancy Holloran, Wayne Stingley, Sue Larson, and Rev. Frank Harmon. Each of the following students will receive a $1,000 grant for 2015:
Andrew Avram is continuing his studies at Valparaiso University. His major is undeclared.
Teresa Corelli is attending Grand Canyon University, majoring in Christian Studies, with an emphasis in Biblical Studies.
Kevin Prenzno will attend Northern Arizona University with a major in Bachelor of Science in Finance.
Katherine Rosenfeld will be studying music education at Northern Arizona University in the fall. She looks forward to singing in the choirs.

Year-to-date thru April 2015, total income was higher than last year's April YTD by 12%, or $189,565. However, offerings were received from six members that represented either one half or their entire 2015 pledge, thus creating a favorable variance. Pledge offerings continue to lag behind budget for the year by $176,000.

STEWARDSHIP AT PINNACLE
The Stewardship Group would like to thank you for your generosity related to meeting our 2015 pledge goal, as stated in the May Vistas. Your commitment to the mission of Pinnacle Presbyterian Church continues to amaze us all! With that said, God’s work is never done.
We still have a deficit in non-pledged giving, thus are in need of funds to meet our budget and bank credit obligations. Giving usually goes down over the summer, which puts a big strain on cash flow. So, please remember God’s ministries here at Pinnacle over the summer. Consider giving if you have not pledged. Consider additional giving if you’ve pledged and feel called to do more. And, again, thank you! You are a blessing.
MUSIC AT PINNACLE
Pinnacle Receives Vital Worship GrantPinnacle Presbyterian Church has received a Vital Worship Grant from
the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The $12,000 grant will fund a year-long project of bringing worship and music leaders to Pinnacle to explore global music and innovative liturgy as we begin work to implement an alternative worship service later in the fall. The grant is one of 29 grants totaling more than $300,000 awarded for 2015 by the Calvin Institute.
Brent and Marilyn Hylton will travel to Grand Rapids in June to gather with other grant recipients on the campus of Calvin College. They will not only learn from the staff of the Institute, but also hear from previous grant recipients who will share the results of their year-long programs with the hope that their stories will energize and encourage everyone else in their own ministries.
The Vital Worship Grants Program is generously supported by Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc.

MISSION AT PINNACLE
Summer Heat: Helping the HomelessSummer is coming, and it’s a brutal time for the homeless. Anyone
who's worked at Andre House in the summer has seen the impact on people without shelter. The guests who come to eat are sunburned, hot, sweating, and fatigued from unrelenting daily temperatures of more than 100 degrees.
Women suffer along with men; UMOM uses buses in the evening to pick-up more than 100 women who are living on the street during the day. UMOM provides them with a meal and a safe place to sleep before returning them to the streets in the morning. Imagine living as our neighbors do, even if only for a short period of time.
Homelessness remains significant in Arizona. The most recent report to the Governor's office, dated December 2014, reports that approximately 29,170 adults and children experienced homelessness during 2014. This summer you can help:

Pray for Madison Street Veterans Association (MANA) which serves veterans and provides services to veterans returning to self-sufficiency.
Pray for our new Open Table team that is beginning this summer. Teams of 10-12 are established to work with an individual/family for up to a year to assist them in returning to self-sufficiency. Consider being a part of our next table beginning soon.

MISSION AT PINNACLE
Backpack Drive BeginsPlease help us provide new backpacks and school supplies to kids
in need. As we have done in previous years, we will be donating school supplies to Vista del Camino. The need is significant for all grades.
Please note that Vista del Camino will only take new backpacks and supplies. Suggested supplies include scissors, glue sticks, sharpened #2 pencils, colored pencils, colored markers, pens, rulers, spiral notebooks, and ruled paper (college or wide).
If you prefer to donate money, please do so through the church office, and clearly note that the contribution is for the Backpack Ministry. Donated items may be dropped off at the church office or in the boxes at the exits of the Sanctuary and Chapel. You may start donating at any time. If you have any questions, please contact Roselyn O’Connell at [email protected].
Kids Can Make a Difference This month, the adults who serve homebound communion took
with them a special gift made by our Kids Can children. The children had planted flowers in lovely hand-decopaged pots especially for our homebound members. The individuals that received them had big grins on their faces. What a great mission project! Thank you to our children and homebound communion volunteers for blessing other members of our Church family!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES AT PINNACLE
Church School Continues This SummerFinally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.
~Ephesians 6:10
School is out for summer…but not church school! We will continue with weekly children’s programming during the entire summer for Wee Ones through fifth graders. Our summer studies will focus on conviction; standing up for yourself and others, especially when it is not the popular thing to do. This core strength has become increasingly more and more important in the daily lives of our children. Could there be a better lesson to prepare our children for the next school year, (and beyond), than grounding them in their faith?
Our June memory verse tells us to be strong in the full armor of the Lord, so our children will become superheroes for God this summer. One of the greatest examples we find of conviction in the Bible comes from the Old Testament book of Daniel. Over the months of June and July we will explore the many faces of Daniel’s conviction and the anointing he received from God for standing up for the truth. Not only does Daniel’s strength in the Lord bring him through many difficult situations, but we also see how his friends are inspired through his faith. Our July memory verse further reinforces the Bible’s guidance about convictions. “Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.” (2 Thessalonians 3:13)
Children will have a chance to put their faith into action this summer, as we will continue with special Kids Can mission projects on the first Sunday of June, July, and August. These projects will complement an active summer Kids Can program in conjunction with some fun Beat the Heat events that focus on mission. Look for more information on these meaningful summer mission projects.

Have you ever thought it would be easy to follow Jesus if you could just see Him? If He were here today, would you recognize Him? What happens when Heaven and Earth collide?
This July, our Jr. High will have a chance to beat the heat as we gather on Wednesday nights to explore Anything But Ordinary: Where Heaven and Earth Collide. We will look at five different stories of Jesus’ life and how the lives of others were changed when they encountered Jesus.
We will start at 5:00 pm with dinner, followed by our study. If time permits, we might even make it into the pool. Join us for one week or all five.

Jr. and Sr. High Get Wet ‘n’ WildJuly 10 and July 27 | 9:00 to 5:00 pm
Join us as we head to Wet ‘n’ Wild water park for the day. Those who need a ride will meet at the church at 9:00 am before we head to the park for a day of fun in the sun. We will return to the church at 5:00 pm. The cost is $40 if you don’t have a season pass, or free if you do. A season pass costs $65 plus tax, so if you plan on heading to Wet ‘n’ Wild more than once this summer, consider getting a pass. RSVP to Frank at [email protected] if you would like to join us on this fun day at the park. We will have a cabana, but please bring money for food and drinks.

Sr. High Mission TripJune 7 - 14 | San Francisco, California
This summer our Sr. High students will have a chance to travel to San Francisco for this year’s mission to work with Center for Student Missions (CSM). CSM is an organization that works with, and in, communities to help serve those in need. Our students will have an opportunity to work with people in the San Francisco/Oakland communities by helping at soup kitchens and hospitals, delivering food to homebound, serving at-risk children and so much more.
Many thanks to those who helped at this year’s Rummage Sale, which makes a trip like this possible.

Have you ever wondered where it is that you grow the most or in what areas you thrive? What about what you would need to risk in order to live more fully? Or why is it that we like a nice clean cross instead of thinking about the cross that Jesus was actually on?
Starting Tuesday, July 7, and running five weeks, our Sr. High students will embark on a journey to help answer these questions and others as we look at the Animate Faith series. Each week we will be engaged by talks that arouse questions like these and others.
We will start at 5:00 pm with dinner, followed by our study. Make sure to bring your swimsuits and towels just in case there is time left to go swimming afterwards. We hope you can join us.

Here at the foot of the mountain, we have created a sanctuary for young children and their families. Every space from the playground to the art studio has been carefully planned and lovingly nurtured. In our twentieth year, we celebrate these accomplishments and rededicate ourselves to this important mission.
PPP’s Nature Explore Outdoor ClassroomIn 2015, Pinnacle Presbyterian Preschool joins a growing network
of organizations and institutions that have created effective nature-based outdoor learning environments for children. The Nature Explore Classrooms are part of a collaborative project of the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation developed in response to the growing disconnect between children and nature.
These outdoor classrooms offer interactive elements such as musical instruments made of natural materials, garden or pathway areas and natural materials for building and creating art. Children who learn and grow in Certified

Nature Explore Classrooms enhance concentration, develop creativity and problem-solving, relieve stress and improve skills in many areas of development. “Pinnacle Presbyterian Preschool has shown tremendous leadership in growing the next generation of environmental stewards,” said Susie Wirth, Nature Explore Outreach Director. “Their commitment to providing research-based and nature-rich learning offers a wonderful example to educators throughout the country.”
Supporting Local CharitiesEach year the preschool raises funds to support local charities
connected to Pinnacle Presbyterian Church. At the school’s open house, auction monies were raised for Harmony Ministries. The Empty Bowls project raised funds through the sale of handmade clay bowls and direct donations of canned goods. A total of $2,500 was donated to these two causes. Most importantly, the school keeps the children at the heart of these campaigns. Volunteers are brought into the school from Foothills Food Bank and UMOM to talk with the children about homelessness. “We are very deliberate in asking children to be compassionate and seek understanding”, said Sabrina Ball, the preschool Director. “Through the Empty Bowls Project children are learning about homelessness and families in need. Moreover, the children are empowered to make a difference in the lives of others.”

This year, nearly 100 teachers attended the April conference with Dr. Lella Gandini, the foremost educator of the Reggio Emilia approach here in North America. “It really places teachers at the heart of improving education here in Arizona” comments Mary Ann Biermeier, Director of Professional Development. “What research shows us is that education and learning are not necessarily individual, but most often occur within the context of learning with others.”
The classrooms reflect the values of group learning through hands-on projects and investigations - promoting social, emotional and language skills development in our youngest learners.
