A NOTE FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARIAN THE HON. BARBARA HEIN

As the Labor Day holiday recedes and Election Day approaches, your parliamentarian's concern for vot-

ing procedures becomes a priority. In this election, there are two offices where we can vote for two people: State Representative and Corpo-

ration Commissioner. When there are two seats available, we are not required to vote for two candidates;

we can vote for a single preferred candidate or “single-shot” our vote for that office. This is better than

voting for our candidate and then filling the ballot by voting for the “less objectionable” among the alter-

natives. That “fill-in” vote might elect the “less objectionable” candidate over the one we actually prefer! We have an example today in LD 9, where there is only one Republican candidate on the ballot. It is in

our interest to vote only for the one Republican and not vote for either Democrat. We do not want our

vote for the “less objectionable” Democrat to elect that Democrat over our Republican.

Ruth Gaddis Jeffries Award

As we are knee deep in the pinnacle of our elec-

tion season I ask that you take a small break to

start thinking about the Ruth Gaddis Jeffries

award, as we will be looking at nominations in

the next two months.

The Ruth Gaddis Jeffries Award is presented

every year at the PCRWC Silver Tea. The award

is given in honor of past member Ruth Gaddis

Jeffries, who served on the boards of the Na-

tional Federation of Republican Women and

the Arizona Federation of Republican

Women. The award is presented to an active

PCRWC member.

The nominees must meet the following criteria: 1)

served as an elected Precinct Committeeman; 2)

been a PCRWC member for at least ten years;

and 3) demonstrated proven loyalty and dedica-

tion to PCRWC.

Next month we will have a comprehensive list of

those members who are eligible for this award.

MEMBERSHIP SUSAN SMITH, CHARMAN MEMBERSHIP SUSAN SMITH, CHARMAN MEMBERSHIP SUSAN SMITH, CHARMAN

We are about to enter the 4th quarter of our membership year and are still hoping to increase our num-

bers. If a new member joins after October 1, she will get a bonus and is a member for 5 quarters.

Currently we have 66 members. In August I reported 67 members but we sadly lost a long time member,

Ginnie Davies. She will be missed. We welcomed one newest member in August. Welcome, Karen Schutte.

Glad you made the move to our club.

Our Silver Tea, that will be held on December 6, is the optimum time to renew your membership. Please

plan to attend this wonderful event and bring your renewal check ($25).

Hope to see many of you at our joint fundraiser on the 21st at the Great American Playhouse. I will have

membership forms if any of your friends or family would like to join.

General Election:

Last Day to Register to Vote: October 6th at midnight

Early voting begins October 9th

General election: November 4th

The joint fundraiser with the Pima County GOP at the Great American Playhouse on Septem-ber, 21st should be very entertaining. The Playhouse in Oro Valley opened one year ago has received terrific reviews. Thanks to the members who have been so supportive in selling tick-ets.

Details for the event: Play: BEETLE-JUICED Date & Time: 3 pm Matinee on Sunday, September 21st Location: 13005 N Oracle Rd in Oro Valley Tickets can no longer be purchased from PCRWC or the Pima County GOP due to the dead-line to reserve our block of seats. The Great American Playhouse actors love audience partici-pation. Who knows, maybe you’ll be dragged on stage! A variety of tasty food selections are optional and can be ordered right at your table. The menu includes pizza, cheese crisps, sau-sage and meatball sandwiches, ice cream treats, beer, wine and soft drinks. Thanks so much for the great participation during our 90th Birthday Party. As a result we showed a net profit of $2,167. To date we have collected $432 from the 50/50 raffles at our program meetings.

MEMBERS IN ACTION Thank you to Julie Katsel for reaching

out to another one of our members for

a locally televised commercial. Perhaps

you have seen the Honorable Lou-Ann Preble giving a friendly warning to other

seniors about the perils ahead of them

with their health insurance? I so enjoyed

the dismay in her facial expressions and

compassion for others as she expressed

her concern. I’m voting for Martha

McSally because I care for seniors, too.

VOLUNTEER HOURS On the back cover of this news-letter is the AzFRW volunteer hours tally sheet. To quantify our amount of volunteerism, as one of the largest political organizations in the country, the NFRW tabulates volunteer hours from its membership from all over the country. The tabulation period spans two years but will start in the sum-mer months and end on the same summer months two years later so that these docu-ments can be submitted for the biennial national conventions in the fall. Please take the time to review your calendars and notate what hours you can re-call.

SILVER TEA JUST AROUND THE CORNER

Please save the date for our annual Membership

Drive event, the Silver Tea. This event is held on

the first Saturday of December so please mark your

calendars for December 6th to ensure you can at-

tend what is our most enjoyable social event of the

year. More details of the event to follow next

month. If you are interested in serving on the Silver Tea

Committee, contact the chairman, Wendy Reuter,

at 520-548-1323 or [email protected].

There are many ways to help and at the next Gen-

eral Membership Meeting a food sign up list will be

passed amongst the tables. Our member, Mary Lou Ogden, is opening her

home for this special event so if you have been

thinking about inviting one of your women friends

into this organization, this is the best time to invite

her. After invitations are printed, just let Wendy

know to mail out an invitation to anyone you would

like to receive one.
