I would first like to thanks Bruce Robison for his service as Assistant Director for the past year. But never fear, he is not totally leaving the Board. He will continue to serve as the Chapter Web-master. Congratulations to Dave Butler who has stepped up to fill the important role as Assistant Director. Many people do not realize

all the Assistant Director does behind the scenes, conducting New Member orientation, organizing volunteers and assisting in organizing and leading rides.

Our annual LOH Valentine’s Day Movie was a great success. We had 60 attendees and most enjoyed “Hail Caesar”. And just so you know, if I had been allowed to help pick out the movie I would have voted for Hateful 8.

As you are reading this, hopefully our 1st Place Chili Cook-of Team VooDoo Chili helmed by Kerry Turner or our 2nd Place Team Minimal Effort fronted by Don Terasaki will have brought home the trophy from the Regional Chili Cook-off held at the new Adam Smith’s H-D in Bedford. If they are successful that means DHOG would host the 2017 Regional Chili Cook-off at Dallas H-D.

Here are some of those dates you might want to make note of:

March 13th – Lori Wetsel, LOH Officer has a new event for us, Painting With a Twist. It’s your opportunity to paint

your own Harley-Davidson masterpiece, suitable for framing under the tutelage of an actual artist. Who knows, we may find a Picasso, Pollack, or even a da Vinci amongst us. Or maybe not, but it sounds like a lot of fun.

March 19th – our 32nd Annual St Patty’s Day Run. For those who have never participated in a poker run this is a fun-filled day of riding, food and door prizes. If you have a question, just ask one of the officers. This is one of our primary Chapter fundraisers so it is important to get as much support

as possible.April 29th & 30th

– Spring Demo Truck. Wanted to check out the 2016 H-D’s but that pesky flooding rain ruined the opportunity? Come out and see if your perfect bike is waiting for you. And, there’s rumor of a challenge being thrown down, a Gals vs. Guys Bake Sale.

May 12th – 14th is the Texas State HOG Rally in Denison. You can register online up until March 24th and

you can always register on-site. We have several members planning to go and you can expect a good time hanging out together or exploring the city and countryside on your own. For more information, go to www.txstatehogrally.com.

There are many other great rides coming up and more in the planning stages. If you have an idea for a ride or trip, please let us know. After all, we live to ride.

Greetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. Hey kids what time is it? That’s right, it’s the beginning of HOG Rally season. The first HOG rally of the 2016 season is at the end of this month of March and we’ll be kicking this party off

in Shreveport, Louisiana. I attended my very first HOG rally in 2001 at

the Texas rally that was held in Fort Worth, and after that rally I was pretty much hooked. I have had the pleasure to also attend HOG rallies in other states during these last fifteen years and I can only say that, while their goal has always been to put on a quality event for us riders, each one has held a special place for me due to their diversity each year. Each rally is different and one should never compare them against each other. That is never a fair evaluation of a memorable event.

Now I will say that my objective for attending these rallies may differ from yours, but that is what it is all about too. A well planned rally offers something for everyone. I go for the opportunity to ride some new roads, eat some of the local cuisine, and meet some new friends. Plus, at some of the larger rallies, the Saturday night concert offers some quality bands to close the event. Think Marty Stuart, Peter Frampton, Doobie Brothers, Grand Funk Railroad, Badfinger, Charlie Daniels, and George Thorogood. Good times for sure. And there is always so much more to do. So

don’t ever write off a HOG rally as the same old thing each year because there truly is something for everyone if you just give it a fair shake.

I am going to list a few of the early season HOG rallies and you can make your own choice as to whether you want to be a part of any of these adventures. So here goes.

The first HOG rally of 2016 is of course the Louisiana HOG rally in Shreveport, LA. It is scheduled for 31 March through 2 April and, while pre-registration has closed, you

can still register onsite. Check them out at www.l a s t a t e h o g r a l l y. c o m for more information. I can attest that there are indeed some really great roads in this part of Louisiana that will be most satisfying to ride. And there will be unlimited crawfish to be consumed too.

The Texas HOG rally this year will be in Denison, TX, 12 May through 14 May. You can

find more information at www.txstatehogrally.com For you Elvis fans out there, I am including a special event

for you. The Tennessee HOG rally, 31 May through 4 June, in Memphis, TN, is a five day celebration of all things Elvis and early Rock & Roll. They are covering all the corners with this rally, which is why they have added two extra days to it. So give this rally some serious thought. Info at www.tnstatehogrally.com

The Arkansas HOG rally will be in Hot Springs, AR, 23 June through 25 June. As usual, this rally puts you right in the center of some of the most beautiful roads and country

for riding. With the exception of a five year absence of the rally being in Hot Springs, we have always found this to be the most popular place for the Arkansas rally to be held. It is a rally and location that we find to be so much fun we gladly return there each year when our schedules allow us to. www.arstaterally.com

There are HOG rallies held throughout the country, plus a few National HOG rallies in some of our neighboring countries. I invite, no, strongly recommend, you check out all these events and see if they might coordinate with your travel plans this year. It also gives you a great opportunity

to show off the Dallas Texas Chapter colors too, so get out there and create an adventure and make some memories that will last you forever. Remember, as Mr. Keen says, “The road goes on forever, and the party never ends.”

I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Till next time remember, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!

Bike Bonding, Part 2

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Thank you for flying Tree Top Airline.

The forecast is for clear skies and light winds for our entire trip; so I’m expecting a very smooth flight. Fasten your seat belts

and we’ll be on the way in just a moment. OH, and I need you to know that even though I’m an experienced airline captain with thousands of hours in the cockpit, I can do everything except...

Huh? Really? He holds my life in his hands, but he’s only partially skilled? Who would get on an airplane with this pilot? The passengers better hope that nothing comes up that requires training and skills that he doesn’t have or doesn’t maintain. This pilot definitely has as skills gap. The NTSB would not allow him to fly.

The MSF defines a skills gap as the difference between the skills that a rider has and the skills he/she is likely to need. I consider riding a motorcycle very similar to flying an aircraft. The training is intense and unique for both; there’s nothing like it. Many of the skills needed are totally contrary to anything we’ve experienced. Riding skillfully requires un-learning actions that one has been using for a lifetime; and learning new skills. Learning the new skills is only half the equation. The skills must be practiced continually or they will decay. I can give several examples. But first:

If a skills gap exists, it means that the motorcyclist is

depending on luck: Luck that every motorist sees you, luck that you maintain your space cushion at all times, and luck that nothing goes wrong in front of you. If something goes wrong in front of you, for instance, do you have the skills to avoid a collision? Will you maintain total control of your motorcycle even in a life-threatening emergency situation? Will your body act properly without conscious thought? Maybe it’s time for a self assessment.

Self Assessment #1: Can you stop your motorcycle from 30 mph in 40 feet or less? Effective braking requires a skill with

which we are not born. We need to learn how to brake properly under the coaching of a professional coach; and then the braking skills must be used every time we ride; else, we won’t have it in an emergency. Riders should be just as skilled using both brakes without thought to stop as we are using the clutch and gears when accelerating without thought. Front brake usage should come naturally; but it won’t unless we practice. (and this means that we

should never use only the rear brake to slow or stop when riding) Self Assessment #2: Can you effectively negotiate a

swerve to avoid an object. Again, this is a skill that does not come naturally. Out of the 200 or so experienced riders that I’ve professionally coached in my MSF career, only about 10% of them were able to properly negotiate a swerve to avoid an obstacle. It takes practice to gain that skill and continual practice to maintain it. When something happens in front of you, there won’t be time to think about the actions required to execute a proper swerve.

Page 19: Pig Tales March 2016

RIDE PICS | 19

DHOG Lunch Ride — Roma Italian Restaurant

Self Assessment #3: Can you negotiate a 24’ U-turn without putting feet on the ground? You may think that this is totally unnecessary, but it’s part of bonding with one’s motorcycle. Putting a foot on the ground is a realization that the skill is missing. It’s important to be as competent at turning your motorcycle at low speed as it is when turning a car. Your mind needs to be free of the burden of control so you can concentrate on your surroundings. The skills required don’t come naturally, and must be coached and practiced.

These are the three main skills that every motorcyclists should have. If your self-assessment shows that you are lacking in one or more of these skills, you may indeed be like the pilot that can do everything except; and are relying on luck that the skills you don’t practice won’t be needed.

Dallas Harley-Davidson DHOG members are fortunate that we have members that want all of their friends to have the skills needed to ride safely. These members devote many hours to their own riding education and practice before coaching others. At our regular weekly DHOG Skills Practice sessions, patterns and situations are set up so that every experienced member can

acquire and maintain the skills to ride safely. No one that regularly attends has ever said, “Gee, I wish I hadn’t learned how to do that.”. Quite the contrary, I’ve been told by many of our members that riding is much more enjoyable with the confidence of being bonded to the motorcycle under every situation and knowing that in case of trouble, they won’t panic and lose control of their machine. Not only that, practice is FUN! It’s on motorcycles with friends . . . how can it not be fun?

This is your captain speaking, welcome aboard Tree Top Airlines. I want all my passengers to know that I have attained all the skills that may be required to get you to your destination and I practice them continuously. I can recover from a stall or a spin. I can make sharp abrupt turns when necessary to avoid collisions. And when we land, I can stop short if needed. If a situation comes up, the aircraft will respond to my controls as if it is a part of my body and I have the education/training to make sure we have a safe flight under all conditions.

Now, let’s go ride. I’m hungry.
