New Year’s Day dawned with a temperature of 37⁰F but that did not deter our ride of the year. After a two-hour ride where we saw the temperature soar to 44⁰F, we dined at El Jacalito Restaurant in Crandall. If Papa Duck’s saying holds true then a great

year is in store for us.The weather this time of year always presents a challenge

for our calendar. We try to keep the changes to a minimum but sometimes we have to make decisions with your safety in mind. With that in mind, it is important to have an email address on file with Ken “Papa Duck” Kennerly that you access outside of work. And seriously consider signing up for the text message alerts for last-minute changes. If all fails and you have questions about the ride, contact the Road Captain for that ride.

Hopefully everyone had a good time at the Annual Party After. One final thanks to Steve Scott, the outgoing Activities Officer for organizing everything and to all the volunteers setting up, serving the food and bringing the desserts. A big thank you to Sean and Rachel for the great door prizes. It was great to see our Shop family in attendance as well. Congratulations to our awardees and thanks to the outgoing Board members we recognized for their service to the Chapter.

As our riding season gets rolling here in the next couple of months we will have lots of Members hitting the road both with other Chapter members as well as with other groups and individuals. As you’re out there riding around, seeing the countryside and visiting parts of our great state

and country, enjoying the local flavor, consider sharing your experiences with others. Submit an article for the Pig Tails. It doesn’t have to be long, just a couple or three paragraphs.

Greetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. “Only a life lived for others is the life worthwhile.” Albert Einstein. There are several ways to interpret this quote from

Dr. Einstein, but the two words that come to me is charity and service to help or assist a rightful cause. And is this not what many of us attempt to do either singularly or as a group? Bikers take great pride in responding to those in need and the reasons behind these actions is seldom a consideration of self-aggrandizement, but a true caring for their fellow man.

Our own chapter works throughout the year raising money for our MotorCops For Kids Toy Run. The money we raise goes directly to the care and comfort of the children who are patients of the Shrine Hospital For Children in Galveston, Texas, as they recover from the effects of burns. We have provided a lot of comfort to these kids and we should be proud of what we do for this cause as a group. Then there are the members who adopt families with children at Christmas who, without this act of kindness, would not have any Christmas to wake up to. Many of our members joined in the ride to Paris, Texas, to show their solidarity and support of the victims of the Paris, France, terrorist attack. But we also need to recognize the work of some of our members who continually respond to helping others when the call is made by their individual actions.

The month of December 2015 will be remembered for many good things, but also for the unfortunate destruction and loss of life caused by a number of tornados that hit our local communities. Some chapter members responded with individual donations. The biker community as a group was quick to begin organizing ways to assist and help those in need. There was a charity ride which delivered cash to the city of Rowlett, and our own Dealership, Dallas Harley Davidson, designated itself as a collection center for food and

clothing to help in relief. These were great efforts and met the needs of the community.

But there were others who stepped up and went the extra mile to actually do the physical dirty work that was needed. Several of our own members applied, were vetted, and joined the official rebuilding efforts at ground zero in Rowlett and Garland. Fellow members

answered the need by donating blood, helping serve hot meals to the victims, and responding to their administration needs. These members who helped in many different ways are too numerous to acknowledge here, and I do not want to risk failing to name everyone, but you all know who you are and you should know that what you did shines well upon you.

There are groups everywhere that are set up to answer the call for help when needed, but the biker community has always been quick to call the individual riders at a moment’s notice to show our support for the needs of others.

A Worthwhile Life

Joining these actions, in a way that works best for you, can be your opportunity to show the world who we really are and also to make ourselves a part of the community by service and charity for those in need. This is one way we can ultimately make our lives worthwhile.

I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Till next time remember, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!

In the world of Amazon…..Why Harley-Davidson isn’t something you can “Add to Cart”.

Towards the end of last year as I started to layout the plans for 2016 I took a lot of time to reflect on 2015 and the changes I have seen with Harley-Davidson; our staff, customers, and

the retail market in general. I came to the conclusion that the internet, online shopping and smart phones have done wonders for our world but little for our social lives.

We have endless information (factual or not) at our fingertips and it takes half the time to accomplish some tasks that it did 10 years ago. So the question comes to mind, why are we now spending our time outside of work with an iPad in our face? The answer from a H-D rider is, “We’re not!!” Reflecting on a recent Saturday, walking down the stairs from my office it was a sea of black leather vests; people of various backgrounds all engaging in conversation and each other, getting ready to go for a ride. When I walked through the showroom I had more people say hello to me than at my own wedding. Hugs galore from the LOH and questions about how my wife and kids are doing. As I write this it makes my eyes water up (no, I’m not crying yet). I don’t want to live in a world where everything we do is through e-mails and posts. I want to shake your hand, hug, laugh, and yes-Ride to Eat!

So enough about what I want, this isn’t about me, it is about you. The Dallas Harley management team has taken a step back this year to focus on what is really important to us and what our role is as stewards of these great American motorcycles. It is not about selling the most chrome or t-shirts. It is about what I

saw and experienced the day I walked down the stairs.

You can have the best motorcycle with the most chrome and cover yourself in leather but it’s the person IN the leather that makes this the most wonderful job on earth. Where else can I get a “good morning” from the GOMG every day? This is one of the few industries left where a computer hasn’t taken over the one thing that we are all not willing to give up: EACH OTHER.

It is you, our HOG members and customers that keep us going and keep Harley-Davidson about the people, the comradery and, of course, the ride! The people who ride today are writing the history for Harley’s future and that is pretty damn cool!

DHOG, we thank you for being you and being here with us. Let’s make 2016 a fun one!

Bike Bonding, Part 1

by Mike Savage

Motorcycling is so much different than driving a car. Think about it? Driving a car you are enclosed

and have control of your environment. The air and the sound can be regulated easily. The controls are different and most modern cars you don’t have to shift gears. Motorcycles on the other hand are a whole different environment. You are on two wheels and you have handle bars instead of a wheel. Braking is with your hand and foot levers. Shifting gears is with your hand and foot. Motorcycling you have to become one with your motor to be a competent rider.

The fit of the bike must be comfortable and you need to adjust the bike to meet your dimensions. The bars, seat, height of the bike needs to be adjusted as well as the controls so the motor can be an extension of you. While sitting on your motor or one that you are looking at purchasing, close your eyes and visualize how the bike should be. Imagine the optimal angle of the bars and foot controls. Do you feel cramped anywhere? Can you touch the ground when sitting on the motor? These are all questions you should ask when fitting your motor to help you bond with your motorcycle. Windshields and fairings also can help with comfort and ride ability. When making these decisions on fitting your motor also think where does it hurt? If something hurts then an adjustment needs to be made.

When motorcycles come from the factory they are made in a standard form and do not always fit the person that bought

them. I have found throughout the years that every bike I have bought has been different and needed to be modified in some way to fit the person. Motorcycles can be lowered and controls can be changed. Seats and windshields can be adjusted. Talk to the parts department and service if you need changes to be made. They have always been willing to listen when I wanted to make changes to my motor.

The critical part is the rider needs to learn how to ride and become one with their motor. The motor need to be fitted appropriately and then a motorcyclist can then begin to bond with their motor. One of my future safety articles will be about the rider and how to bond with your motorcycle while riding.

ABOUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENTThe Service Department is the circulatory system of the dealership — the blood flow. EXTENDED WARRANTY INFORMATIONOne of the best products from Harley-Davidson is the ability to add an extended warranty to your bike at just about any time in your ownership.
