MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATEIllustrious Sir, Chris Hagenian

Nobles and Ladies, as we move thoughMarch we are rapidly approaching the Western Shrine Association

(WSA) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 22-26. We are organizing a bus trip leaving from El Zaribah on the 22nd (see flyer for details) which will be a great fun for all and a way to get there and back without you doing any driving, just sit back and relax. Go to www.WesternShrine.org for the conference and room registration information, and schedule of events. This

is going to be a great event! Rooms are running out fast, so reserve now!We have two Ceremonials coming up. One is at the WSA Convention

performed by El Bekal Shrine from Anaheim, CA In Memory of Ill. Sir Larry Kesselring, P.P., P. WSA President. In May we will have our own ceremonial at El Zaribah performed by our own top-notch Ceremonial and Ritualistic Divan team.

The Young Gunz had another very successful Super Bowl Party, which was a ton of fun watching an exciting game. Next, we took a trip to Yuma for the Yuma/Foothill OV and Silver Spur Parade. Thank You to all the Nobles & Ladies of Yuma for the hard work in your fundraising efforts, you all do a fantastic job and are truly an asset to El Zaribah. The Parade was great with perfect weather and we shared in great fellowship and hospitality with Al Bahr Shrine from San Diego, CA. Our Hospitality Crew held down the fort and did an amazing job of keeping everyone fed and watered.Lady Mary and I attended the LOS Ceremonial Lunch and had a wonderful

time speaking with everyone and meeting the new candidates. The CIF BBQ will be here at the end of the month so don’t forget your tickets! Thank you to all the Units and Clubs for stepping up to purchase the concession equipment for the Red Fez, you truly met the challenge and this will help us reduce or eliminate the kitchen overhead during smaller events.Lastly, if you were at the Stated Meeting in February you are aware that we are

facing some budget challenges. Please consider two things: 1) Replace yourself once every three years, 2) Host a general fundfundraiser. If you have not done either in the last several years we NEED your help now! Fraternally, Chris

Phoenix Outreach Clinic

As I was reading my January 2015 Arabian Tales, I came across the picture of Jaden Buckley and the

thank you note from his Mom for the Hospital Patient Christmas Party. I think a little more explanation is due explaining the picture of Jaden.

Jaden and his family are very thankful for the treatment that Jaden is receiving from Shriners Hospitals for Children. Jaden decided, on his own, that he wanted to give back some for what he has received. Jaden started collecting pull tabs at his school and he brings them to us. We

then use the funds generated to buy the crackers and juice boxes for the Outreach Clinics to give to the patients. Jaden is currently six years old and is a great example of the caliber of patients we have in our hospital system. Jaden should truly be an inspiration to all of us. I’m very proud to call him one of our Shrine Kids.

Arabian Tales Volume 33 – Issue #3

Each person has a story to tell about their life and their family.

My history with El Zaribah goes back about a decade before I was born. My grandfather, Cayeton Schauer, joined El Zaribah in 1961; my step-father, Leo Balthazor, joined El Zaribah in 1981; and my step-brother, Steve Balthazor, joined El Zaribah in 2000. Needless to say, I have been around El Zaribah my whole life. Just as each of us has a story to tell, so does El Zaribah.

El Zaribah’s story starts way back, two centuries ago. In 1896, a few men wanted to re-create a camaraderie in Phoenix they had elsewhere. These two sets of images are of the original planned El Zaribah building and then what the building looked like on the day it was dedicated by then Imperial Sir Ellis L. Garretson along with Ill. Sir Vic Hanny.

In preparation for writing this series of articles, I came upon a treasure trove of history and information about EL Zaribah. I’m not much of a history fan, but this information completely took my breath away and who better to share the information with, than El Zaribah members,

themselves. I have found tales of celebration, honesty, and brilliance.

With 119 years of history, El Zaribah’s past is truly remarkable. My family’s bonds to this amazing organization go back decades and with the historical information I have discovered, El Zaribah’s history becomes even more intriguing.

This historical series will run in each issue of the Arabian Tales. In addition, we will share the history (after the magazine goes to print) with our friends and family on social media via Facebook. So, please connect with us and share the history that is El Zaribah.

During Imperial Session, creative and forward-thinking Shriners were invited to a brainstorming

session on membership development, covering ways to both care for our current members and attract new ones. The gathering was the first meeting of the Shrine Membership Action Renewal Team (S.M.A.R.T.). After a presentation on membership resources over the past 32 years, current membership numbers and projections on future numbers, three main topics were discussed:

• How younger nobles can assist temples• The importance of maintaining strong Masonic

relations• The need to be more open with the public, other

Masons and family members Within these areas, some observations and specific, important points were made:

• Emphasize fun with a purpose• Allow young members some leadership roles• Recognize the critical importance of keeping websites current and social media fresh• Maintain close relationships with local lodges• Share events with local lodges to build lasting relationships• Include the overall community in events• Share your temple successes with other temples• Share ideas with one another

The key to membership success is commitment and hard work. The committee challenges every Shriner, in every temple, to join our membership efforts in order to ensure our future

and allow us to continue our great work with the "World's Greatest Philanthropy;” Shriners Hospitals for Children. We encourage all members and temples to think outside the box, embrace a culture of change in our fraternity, start a S.M.A.R.T. group and make membership a priority. The future of Shriners International depends on it.

PHOTOCONTEST

What should I photograph? (Note: These are just suggestions. Be creative and have fun with this!)

• Shriners laughing and having fun• Scenes depicting brotherhood/friendship • Shriners in interesting costumes• Shriners driving fun vehicles

• Temple, club or unit gatherings• Shriners in the community• Fezzes, memorabilia, vehicles or other Shriner accessories

What are the qualities of a winning image?

How will the winners be chosen?

Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but what will set a photo apart from the rest is the ability to capture that “picture perfect” moment that expresses the true spirit of the Shriners.

A panel of impartial judges will choose ten winning photos. Winners will receive a plaque, pin and an Amazon.com gift card. Winning photos will be published in the 2015 Annual Report and in an issue of Shriner Magazine: Pride and Tradition. They will also be shown during the Public Relations report at the 2015 Imperial Session in Houston.

Best of luck! We can’t wait to see how you have captured the essence of what it means to be a Shriner.

For rules and entry form go to www.shrinersvillage.com, email [email protected] or call813-281-8162. Entries must be received no later than March 31, 2015.

Who can enter the contest? The photo contest is now open to Shriners and their ladies!

CulinaryGreetings from behind the line! Well

we have survived another blustery winter in Arizona! Really not very chilly but a little more rain than

previous years. The sun keeps coming up every day and the temps are beautiful.Culinary is serving at every Unit Head, Stated

Meeting and whenever the Potentate desires quality service. We are sorry if you have not seen us, but we have been here, even if you haven’t. Members really do need to support our Temple activities. Don’t just be “Dues Payers. You don’t gain a thing by sitting on your rear in front of the TV. NCIS will air again in reruns this summer.Culinary meets on the third Tuesday of

the month. Join us for a bite in the Red Fez Room and follow-up with our unit meeting in the Culinary Room at 7:00. We finally have our schedule ironed out and our guys seem to know when and where. I may not, as I just wrote Thursday and had to change it to Tuesday. Thank God I got a pay raise and signup bonus last fall. It really is Tuesday. Be sure to say “Hi!” as Lenny pours gravy on

your thumb. Remember I am the one with the clean apron, Jimmy is the confused one and we occasionally see Bob as he passes by the serving while out wandering around.Ken Conner, Culinary Scribe?

Director’s StaffAs we bask in this great weather we

realize that the hottest part of the year is coming up and it might be time to start cooling down...which is why the Director’s Staff will be hosting

our first ever Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Please come down and have some fun and fellowship with us as we learn to speak German, sing sporadically, and dance horrifically. Sounds like fun! With an Oompa Loompa

band, lederhosen, Frauleins, and good beer we might just

have some fun. Our Secretary of the Unit, David Hemberger, is the Chairman of the Oktoberfest Committee so please see David with any questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing you at the

Shrine and we thank you for supporting our fraternal fundraisers. The Director’s Staff meets the 4th

Wednesday of the month with our Social Hour at 5pm, dinner at 6pm, and our meeting upstairs at 7pm, except for the summer. A Red Coverall

GreetersOur first ever Crab Feed was

a resounding success. We certainly made a few errors but we’re looking forward to

a new and improved crab event next year. Our stretch caddy made it back to the

Shrine parking lot following the Fiesta Bowl Parade then quit running. It was towed home on a flatbed tow truck to receive a little TLC and a new fuel pump before Laveen, Yuma and Apache Junction paradesOur joint OV with the Temple Guard and

Provost to honor our Potentate Chris and his Lady Mary is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, which also happens to be St. Patrick’s Day. So, in fine Irish tradition, we’re serving Corned Beef and Cabbage with pehaps a little Jamison to wash it all down.Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a

few good men. We meet the third Monday of each month at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. Join us at 5:30 PM for libations and dinner.Ellis (Nick) Nichols, President

Motorcycle UnitThe Motorcycle Unit is “Rolling

Strong” this parade season, with more bikes than we have seen for a couple of years! We welcome Joe Wilds, a new

member and a Drill Team participant. We

also have some of our good friends from Minnesota back in the saddle with us, welcome back Moe and Steve! Social members are riding guard and coming to practices and doing everything possible to support the Unit, thanks Dave! Tom Sheldon whipped up a mean Irish stew for the “Bash Before the Ball”. I think he won the coveted “first empty crock pot award”. Andie’s turkey chili was also a big hit, thanks to both of you! We helped to send off our Dear departed Brother Bobby-T Traskell by attending his memorial service at the American Legion in Apache Junction. It was a nice service that was very well attended by Unit members. Bobby-T, we miss you, Brother! We are heading into our busy season!!

Are you ready to lend a hand? Your help is needed!! The swap meet and antique motorcycle show will be Sunday March 29th and the Bowling Palooza is three days later on Wednesday April 1st. If you haven’t been to the swap meet/bike show you should come down to see the huge display of collectible motorcycles. The Bowling Palooza is a Shrine wide event and brings in a significant amount of money to the Transportation Fund. If you would like to help out with either of these events, please call Jim Harrison @ 602-570-3812 or email at [email protected] .

Mounted PatrolHowdy Y’all! Hope this finds you

and yours doing well. So far this year our Unit is picking up a little more interest and activity. We had six riders in the Fiesta Bowl parade

and four riders in the Wickenburg parade. Al McDonald and Scott Smith are helping supply horses for willing riders but no mount. So if you are willing to ride but need a horse, let us know. Then again, even if you do not ride, we can use your help in different areas. Dennis and Linda Thompson have been bringing refreshments to the parades and I am going to help them as needed and no horse to ride. We are planning on

enhancing the refreshment portion even more. So even if you do not ride, we want you and need you. And for sure, come to the meetings and help us plan upcoming events, and share your input. Right now is a perfect time to get involved in the Spring Ride. As you know this is our big event and money maker and we are blessed to have the beautiful EZ Ranch for our function, thanks to Scott Smith. So please come in and help and share the fun.As I said, the year is progressing slow, but

good. Shorty is doing a great job as Captain and Chia Pet is handling the Treasurer/Secretary position well. We are planning on a joint Christmas party this year to help keep costs down and have even more folks to party with.Interest and enthusiasm is picking up, so

come on in and be a part of the fun and growth.Until we cross trails, Vaya Con Dios

Mobile NoblesThe Mobile Nobles’ officers for

2015 were sworn in by longtime member and east valley Ambassador Noble Junior Grimm. Now they can officially go to work on the upcoming projects.

With our Joint OV just over, here are some of the things that came about during that great evening of fun and fellowship. A beautiful stained glass kachina as well as gifts were presented to the Ill. Sir Chris and first lady Mary. A $200:00 gift to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® was donated by Mr. Gene Hudson in the name of the Mobile Nobles in lieu of being paid to make the kachina. The Ill. Sir was also presented with a check in the amount of $5,000.00 to be passed on to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Salt Lake to help support a new surgical table that they require. The Mobile Nobles are proud and honored to be able to help in this worthy project. Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Daughters of the NileI cannot believe a year ago I

was crowned Queen of Qadesh Temple #35, Daughters of the Nile and what a wonderful ride it has been.

I was fortunate to visit the Shriners Hospitals in Philadelphia and Erie, PA and was truly amazed at the state of the art facilities, equipment and labs used to help the children. The tours were outstanding. These visits were a truly humbling experience but makes one proud to be able to help, even in a small way.Our Clubs in Mesa, Sun City and Payson
