Physics and Technologyof Amorphous-CrystallineHeterostructure Silicon Solar CellsThe challenge of developing photovoltaic (PV)technology to a cost-competitive alternativefor established energy sources can be achievedusing simple, high-throughput mass-productioncompatible processes. Issues to be addressed for largescale PV deployment in large power plants or inbuilding integrated applications are enhancing theperformance of solar energy systems by increasingsolar cell efficiency, using low amounts of materials

which are durable, stable, and abundant on earth, and reducing manufacturing and installation cost.Today’s solar cell multi-GW market is dominated bycrystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer technology, howevernew cell concepts are entering the market. One verypromising solar cell design to answer these needs isthe silicon hetero-junction solar cell, of which theemitter and back surface field are basically producedby a low temperature growth of ultra-thin layers ofamorphous silicon. In this design, amorphous silicon(a-Si:H) constitutes both "emitter" and "base-contact/back surface field" on both sides of a thin crystallinesilicon wafer-base (c-Si) where the photogeneratedelectrons and holes are generated; at the same time,a Si:H passivates the c-Si surface. Recently, cellefficiencies above 23% have been demonstrated forsuch solar cells. In this book, the editors presentan overview of the state-of-the-art in physics andtechnology of amorphous-crystalline heterostructuresilicon solar cells.

Heterogeneous Ferroelectric SolidSolutionsPhases and Domain States

The book deals with perovskite-type ferroelectricsolid solutions for modern materials science andapplications, solving problems of complicatedheterophase/domain structures near themorphotropic phase boundary and applicationsto various systems with morphotropic phases. Inthis book domain state–interface diagrams arepresented for the interpretation of heterophase statesin perovskite-type ferroelectric solid solutions. Itallows to describe the stress relief in the presenceof polydomain phases, the behavior of unit-cellparameters of coexisting phases and the effect ofexternal electric fields. The novelty of the bookconsists in (i) the first systematization of data aboutheterophase states and their evolution in ferroelectricsolid solutions (ii) the general interpretation ofheterophase and domain structures at changingtemperature, composition or electric field (iii)the complete analysis of interconnection domainstructures, unit-cell parameters changes, heterophasestructures and stress relief.

3,000 Deep-Sky ObjectsAn Annotated Catalogue

The Annotated Catalog of 3,000 Deep-Sky Objects isa record of the most extensive and systematic visualsurvey of the sky done in modern times. The 3,000deep-sky objects listed contain short descriptions ofwhat these objects look like in the author’s powerfulbinocular telescope. Objects in the book are organizedby position for easy identification of unknown targets.Full indexes by catalog numbers and names allowsearches for specific objects. Descriptions of objectsare better than photographs for identifying deep-skyobjects because the visual appearance never matchesthe photographic image. Nor are sketches entirely

satisfactory because there is a strong unconscioustendency to draw what the observer remembersfrom photographs of objects. Compared to otherastronomical guidebooks this book contains by farthe largest number of objects viewed through a 10-to 14-inch telescope and is a ‘must-have’ for seriousamateur and professional observers.

Strongly Correlated SystemsTheoretical Methods

The volume presents, for the very first time, anexhaustive collection of those modern theoreticalmethods specifically tailored for the analysisof Strongly Correlated Systems. Many novelmaterials, with functional properties emerging frommacroscopic quantum behaviors at the frontier ofmodern research in physics, chemistry and materialsscience, belong to this class of systems. Any techniqueis presented in great detail by its own inventor or byone of the world-wide recognized main contributors. The exposition has a clear pedagogical cut and fullyreports on the most relevant case study where thespecific technique showed to be very successful in

describing and enlightening the puzzling physics ofa particular strongly correlated system. The book isintended for advanced graduate students and post-docs in the field as textbook and/or main reference, but also for other researchers in the field whoappreciates consulting a single, but comprehensive, source or wishes to get acquainted, in a as painlessas possible way, with the working details of a specifictechnique.

The Physics of InvisibilityA Story of Light and Deception

Arthur C. Clarke famously wrote that, "anysufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishablefrom magic." These words most certainly ring truewith respect to invisibility cloaking devices. At workis the magic of science, of course. The technology tomake an object simply disappear from view is now areality. There is both great fear and great desire in thethought of invisibility. Indeed, for thousands of years, authors have grappled with the idea. Power, devilry, secrecy, ethical dilemma, and moral corruption -invisibility has it all. And yet, our waking worldis full of familiar invisible phenomena. Electricityflowing along a metal wire, the gravity that keeps usgrounded, the air we breathe, the bacteria and virusesthat make us ill, the X-rays that reveal our brokenbones - all are invisible to our eyes. They surroundand envelop us, and we don't give them a secondthought. Nature long ago learned how to play trickswith light rays, enriching the world with rainbows, mirages, and animal camouflage. The new physics ofinvisibility simply aims to take these tricks of nature afew steps further. Indeed, by learning what light is andhow it interacts with matter, physicists have begunto take control of light - with metamaterials, which, manmade, can be precisely melded, warped, twisted, transformed, and even time-edited.In this book theancient and modern story of light and invisibilityis revealed, from early Greek speculations to theremarkable works of James Clerk Maxwell. The newand burgeoning field of transformation optics is alsoexplored, and the story behind the development of thefirst fully functional invisibility cloak is charted. What

Probability in PhysicsWhat is the role and meaning of probabilityin physical theory, in particular in two of themost successful theories of our age, quantumphysics and statistical mechanics? Laws onceconceived as universal and deterministic, suchas Newton‘s laws of motion, or the second law ofthermodynamics, are replaced in these theoriesby inherently probabilistic laws. This collection ofessays by some of the world‘s foremost expertspresents an in-depth analysis of the meaning ofprobability in contemporary physics. Amongthe questions addressed are: How are probabilitiesdefined? Are they objective or subjective? What istheir  explanatory value? What are the differencesbetween quantum and classical probabilities? Theresult is an informative and thought-provoking bookfor the scientifically inquisitive.

Density Matrix Theory andApplicationsWritten in a clear pedagogic style, this book dealswith the application of density matrix theory toatomic and molecular physics. The aim is to preciselycharacterize sates by a vector and to construct generalformulas and proofs of general theorems. The basicconcepts and quantum mechanical fundamentals(reduced density matrices, entanglement, quantumcorrelations) are discussed in a comprehensive way.The discussion leads up to applications like coherenceand orientation effects in atoms and molecules, decoherence and relaxation processes. This thirdedition has been updated and extended throughoutand contains a completely new chapter exploringnonseparability and entanglement in two-particlespin-1/2 systems. The text discusses recent studiesin atomic and molecular reactions. A new chapterexplores nonseparability and entanglement in two-particle spin-1/2 systems.

Dijet Angular Distributions inProton-Proton CollisionsAt √s = 7 TeV and √s = 14 TeV

This thesis is based on the first data from the LargeHadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Its theme canbe described as the classical Rutherford scatteringexperiment adapted to the LHC: measurement ofscattering angles to search for new physics andsubstructure. At the LHC, colliding quarks andgluons exit the proton collisions as collimatedparticle showers, or jets. The thesis presents studiesof the scattering angles of these jets. It includes aphenomenological study at the LHC design energyof 14 TeV, where a model of so-called large extradimensions is used as a benchmark process forthe sensitivity to new physics. The experimentalresult is the first measurement, made in 2010, byATLAS, operating at the LHC start-up energy of7 TeV. The result is compatible with the StandardModel and demonstrates how well the physics andthe apparatus are understood. The first data is a tinyfraction of what will be accumulated in the comingyears, and this study has set the stage for performingthese measurements with confidence as the LHCaccumulates luminosity and increases its energy, thereby probing smaller length scales.

MechanicsAn Intensive Course

Mechanics is one of the oldest and at the sametime newest disciplines, in the sense that there aremethods and principles developed first in mechanicsbut now widely used in almost all branches ofphysics: electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, classical and quantum field theory, special andgeneral theory of relativity, etc. More than that, there are some formalisms like Lagrangian andHamiltonian approaches, which represent the keystone for the development of the above-mentioneddisciplines.During the last 20-25 years, classicalmechanics has undergone an important revivalassociated with the progress in non-linear dynamics, applications of Noether’s theorem and the extensionof variational principles in various interdisciplinarysciences (for instance, magnetofluid dynamics). Thus, there ought to exist a book concerned with the appliedanalytical formalism, first developed in the frame oftheoretical mechanics, which has proved to be one ofthe most efficient tools of investigation in the entirearena of science. The present book is an outcome ofthe authors’ teaching experience over many years indifferent countries and for different students studyingdiverse fields of physics. The book is intended forstudents at the level of undergraduate and graduatestudies in physics, engineering, astronomy, appliedmathematics and for researchers working in relatedsubjects. We hope that the original presentation andthe distribution of the topics, the various applicationsin many branches of physics and the set of morethan 100 proposed problems, shall make this booka comprehensive and useful tool for students andresearchers.

Quantum Entanglement inElectron OpticsGeneration, Characterization, and Applications

This monograph forms an interdisciplinary study inatomic, molecular, and quantum information (QI)

science. Here a reader will find that applications of thetools developed in QI provide new physical insightsinto electron optics as well as properties of atoms &molecules which, in turn, are useful in studying QIboth at fundamental and applied levels. In particular, this book investigates entanglement properties offlying electronic qubits generated in some of the wellknown processes capable of taking place in an atomor a molecule following the absorption of a photon. Here, one can generate Coulombic or fine-structureentanglement of electronic qubits. The propertiesof these entanglements differ not only from eachother, but also from those when spin of an inner-shellphotoelectron is entangled with the polarization ofthe subsequent fluorescence. Spins of an outer-shellelectron and of a residual photoion can have free orbound entanglement in a laboratory.

Dark Nebulae, Dark Lanes, andDust BeltsAs probably the only book of its type, this work isaimed at the observer who wants to spend time withsomething less conventional than the usual fare.Because we usually see objects in space by means ofillumination of one kind or another, it has becomeroutine to see them only in these terms. However, part of almost everything that we see is the definingdimension of dark shading, or even the completeobscuration of entire regions in space. Thus this bookis focused on everything dark in space: those darkvoids in the stellar fabric that mystified astronomersof old; the dark lanes reported in many star clusters;the magical dust belts or dusty regions that havegiven so many galaxies their identities; the greatswirling 'folds' that we associate with bright nebulae;the small dark feature detectable even in someplanetary nebulae; and more. Many observers payscant attention to dark objects and details. Perhapsthey are insufficiently aware of them or of the viewingpotential they hold, but also it may be because ofthe various viewing challenges that dark objectspose. Discussions on viewing methods and the bestequipment for a wide cross section of these objectsare included, along with many detailed descriptions. The book contains virtually every dark object worththe observer's attention.Whether viewing live throughthe eyepiece or indirectly through CCD or other

imaging techniques, this unique compendium anddiscussion of all things dark in space will hopefullyprove compelling and rewarding.

From the Universe to theElementary ParticlesA First Introduction to Cosmology and theFundamental Interactions

In this book, the author leads the reader, step bystep and without any advanced mathematics, to aclear understanding of the foundations of modernelementary particle physics and cosmology. He alsoaddresses current and controversial questions ontopics such as string theory. The book contains gentleintroductions to the theories of special and generalrelativity, and also classical and quantum fieldtheory. The essential aspects of these concepts areunderstood with the help of simple calculations;for example, the force of gravity as a consequenceof the curvature of the space-time. Also treated arethe Big Bang, dark matter and dark energy, as wellas the presently known interactions of elementaryparticles: electrodynamics, the strong and the weakinteractions including the Higgs boson. Finally, thebook sketches as yet speculative theories: GrandUnification theories, supersymmetry, string theoryand the idea of additional dimensions of space-time.Since no higher mathematical or physics expertiseis required, the book is also suitable for college anduniversity students at the beginning of their studies.Hobby astronomers and other science enthusiastsseeking a deeper insight than can be found in populartreatments will also appreciate this unique book.

This monograph introduces an exact model fora critical spin chain with arbitrary spin S, whichincludes the Haldane--Shastry model as the specialcase S=1/2.  While spinons in the Haldane-Shastrymodel obey abelian half-fermi statistics, the spinonsin the general model introduced here obey non-abelian statistics.  This manifests itself throughtopological choices for the fractional momentumspacings.  The general model is derived by mappingexact models of quantized Hall states onto spinchains.  The book begins with pedagogical reviewof all the relevant models including the non-abelian statistics in the Pfaffian Hall state, and isunderstandable to every student with a graduatecourse in quantum mechanics.

Spin Squeezing and Non-linearAtom Interferometry with Bose-Einstein CondensatesInterferometry, the most precise measurementtechnique known today, exploits the wave-like natureof the atoms or photons in the interferometer. Asexpected from the laws of quantum mechanics, thegranular, particle-like features of the individuallyindependent atoms or photons are responsible forthe precision limit, the shot noise limit. However this“classical” bound is not fundamental and it is the aimof quantum metrology to overcome it by employingentanglement among the particles. This work reportson the realization of spin-squeezed states suitable foratom interferometry. Spin squeezing was generatedon the basis of motional and spin degrees of freedom, whereby the latter allowed the implementation of afull interferometer with quantum-enhanced precision.

Measurement UncertaintiesPhysical Parameters and Calibration ofInstruments

This book fulfills the global need to evaluatemeasurement results along with the associateduncertainty. In the book, together with the detailsof uncertainty calculations for many physicalparameters, probability distributions and theirproperties are discussed. Definitions of various termsare given and will help the practicing metrologiststo grasp the subject. The book helps to establishinternational standards for the evaluation ofthe quality of raw data obtained from various

laboratories for interpreting the results of variousnational metrology institutes in an internationalinter-comparisons. For the routine calibration ofinstruments, a new idea for the use of pooled varianceis introduced. The uncertainty calculations areexplained for (i) independent linear inputs, (ii) non-linear inputs and (iii) correlated inputs. The meritsand limitations of the Guide to the Expression ofUncertainty in Measurement (GUM) are discussed.Monte Carlo methods for the derivation of theoutput distribution from the input distributions areintroduced. The Bayesian alternative for calculation ofexpanded uncertainty is included. A large number ofnumerical examples is included.

The Classical Theory of FieldsElectromagnetism

The study of classical electromagnetic fields is anadventure. The theory is complete mathematicallyand we are able to present it as an example ofclassical Newtonian experimental and mathematicalphilosophy. There is a set of foundationalexperiments, on which most of the theory isconstructed. And then there is the bold theoreticalproposal of a field-field interaction from JamesClerk Maxwell. This textbook presents the theoryof classical fields as a mathematical structure basedsolidly on laboratory experiments. Here the studentis introduced to the beauty of classical field theory asa gem of theoretical physics. To keep the discussionfluid, the history is placed in a beginning chapter andsome of the mathematical proofs in the appendices.Chapters on Green’s Functions and Laplace’sEquation and a discussion of Faraday’s Experimentfurther deepen the understanding. The chapter onEinstein’s relativity is an integral necessity to the text. Finally, chapters on particle motion and waves in adispersive medium complete the picture. High qualitydiagrams and detailed end-of-chapter questionsenhance the learning experience.

Chips 2020A Guide to the Future of Nanoelectronics

The chips in present-day cell phones already containbillions of sub-100-nanometer transistors. By 2020,however, we will see systems-on-chips with trillionsof 10-nanometer transistors. But this will be the endof the miniaturization, because yet smaller transistors,

containing just a few control atoms, are subject tostatistical fluctuations and thus no longer useful. We also need to worry about a potential energycrisis, because in less than five years from now, with current chip technology, the internet alonewould consume the total global electrical power!Thisbook presents a new, sustainable roadmap towardsultra-low-energy (femto-Joule), high-performanceelectronics. The focus is on the energy-efficiencyof the various chip functions: sensing, processing, and communication, in a top-down spirit involvingnew architectures such as silicon brains, ultra-low-voltage circuits, energy harvesting, and 3D silicontechnologies. Recognized world leaders from industryand from the research community share their viewsof this nanoelectronics future. They discuss, amongother things, ubiquitous communication based onmobile companions, health and care supported byautonomous implants and by personal carebots, safeand efficient mobility assisted by co-pilots equippedwith intelligent micro-electromechanical systems, and internet-based education for a billion peoplefrom kindergarden to retirement. This book shouldhelp and interest all those who will have to makedecisions associated with future electronics: students, graduates, educators, and researchers, as well asmanagers, investors, and policy makers.Introduction:Towards Sustainable 2020 Nanoelectronics.-From Microelectronics to Nanoelectronics.- TheFuture of Eight Chip Technologies.- Analog–Digital Interfaces.- Interconnects and Transceivers.-Requirements and Markets for Nanoelectronics.-ITRS: The International Technology Roadmapfor Semiconductors.- Nanolithography.- Power-Efficient Design Challenges.- Superprocessors andSupercomputers.- Towards Terabit Memories.- 3DIntegration for Wireless Multimedia.- The Next-Generation Mobile User-Experience.- MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) for Automotive andConsumer.- Vision Sensors and Cameras.- DigitalNeural Networks for New Media.- Retinal Implantsfor Blind Patients.- Silicon Brains.- Energy Harvestingand Chip Autonomy.- The Energy Crisis.- TheExtreme-Technology Industry.- Education andResearch for the Age of Nanoelectronics.- 2020 Worldwith Chips.

Hyperbolic ChaosA Physicist’s View

"Hyperbolic Chaos: A Physicist’s View” presentsrecent progress on uniformly hyperbolic attractorsin dynamical systems from a physical rather thanmathematical perspective (e.g. the Plykin attractor, the Smale – Williams solenoid). The structurallystable attractors manifest strong stochastic properties, but are insensitive to variation of functions andparameters in the dynamical systems. Based on thesecharacteristics of hyperbolic chaos, this monographshows how to find hyperbolic chaotic attractors inphysical systems and how to design a physical systemsthat possess hyperbolic chaos.  This book is designed

as a reference work for university professors andresearchers in the fields of physics, mechanics, andengineering.  Dr. Sergey P. Kuznetsov is a professor atthe Department of Nonlinear Processes, Saratov StateUniversity, Russia.

Studying Atomic Dynamics withCoherent X-raysDiffusion in solids at moderate temperatures isa well-known phenomenon.  However, directexperimental evidence about the responsible atomic-scale mechanisms has been scarce, due to difficultiesin probing the relevant length- and time-scales.The present thesis deals with the application of X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) foranswering such questions. This is an establishedmethod for the study of slow dynamics on length-scales of a few nanometres. The scattered intensityin the diffuse regime, i.e. corresponding to atomicdistances, is very low, however, and so it has so farbeen considered impossible to use XPCS for thisproblem.Threefold progress is reported in this work:It proposes a number of systems selected for highdiffuse intensity, it optimizes the photon detectionand data evaluation procedures, and it establishestheoretical models for interpretating the results.Together these advances allowed the first successfulatomic-scale XPCS experiment, which elucidated therole of preferred configurations for atomic jumps ina copper-gold alloy. The growth in available coherentX-ray intensity together with next-generation X-raysources will open up a wide field of application forthis new method.

Matter, Dark Matter, and Anti-MatterIn Search of the Hidden Universe

For over ten years, the dark side of the universe hasbeen headline news. Detailed studies of the rotationof spiral galaxies, and 'mirages' created by clusters ofgalaxies bending the light from very remote objects, have convinced astronomers of the presence of largequantities of dark (unseen) matter in the cosmos. Moreover, in the 1990s, it was discovered that somefour to five billion years ago the expansion of theuniverse entered a phase of acceleration. This impliesthe existence of dark energy. The nature of these'dark; ingredients remains a mystery, but they seemto comprise about 95 percent of the matter/energycontent of the universe. As for ordinary matter, although we are immersed in a sea of dark particles, including primordial neutrinos and photons from'fossil' cosmological radiation, both we and ourenvironment are made of ordinary, baryonic matter.Strangely, even if 15-20 percent of matter is baryonicmatter, this represents only 4-5 percent of the totalmatter/energy content of the cosmos. Here, authorsAlain Mazure and Vincent Le Brun present theinventory of matter, both baryonic and exotic, andinvestigate the nature and fate of matter's twin, anti-matter. According to the standard model, matterand anti-matter should have been formed in equalquantities. Yet there seems to have been a very slightasymmetry, as yet unexplained, where 100,000,001particles of matter formed for every 100,000,000particles of anti-matter! The authors show howdevelopments in technology have led to significantprogress in scientific research and how, in tandemwith the evolution of new ideas, these advances arehelping to lift the cosmic veil.

The Chemical CosmosA Guided Tour

If you have ever wondered how we get from theawesome impersonality of the Big Bang universe tothe point where living creatures can start to form, and evolve into beings like you, your friends and yourfamily, wonder no more. Steve Miller provides us witha tour through the chemical evolution of the universe, from the formation of the first molecules all the wayto the chemicals required for life to evolve. Using asimple Hydrogen molecule – known as H-three-plus- as a guide, he takes us on a journey that starts withthe birth of the first stars, and how, in dying, theypour their hearts out into enriching the universe inwhich we live. Our molecular guide makes its firstappearance at the source of the Chemical Cosmos,at a time when only three elements and a total of 11molecules existed. From those simple beginnings,H-three-plus guides us down river on the violentcurrents of exploding stars, through the streams ofthe Interstellar Medium, and into the delta wherenew stars and planets form. We are finally left on theshores of the sea of life. Along the way, we meet thekey characters who have shaped our understandingof the chemistry of the universe, such as Cambridgephysicist J.J. Thomson and the Chicago chemistTakeshi Oka. And we are given an insider’s viewof just how astronomers, making use of telescopesand Earth-orbiting satellites, have put together ourmodern view of the Chemical Cosmos.

This book containsdescriptions and photographs of  his 110 catalogedobjects, with instructions on how to find themwithout a computerized telescope or even settingcircles. Messier's telescope (thought to be a 4-inch)was, by today's amateur standards, small. It also hadrather poor optics by modern standards. The visualappearance of a Messier object is often very differentfrom what can be imaged with the same telescope,

and this book shows what you can see with a smalltelescope or even binoculars!

MagnetismBasics and Applications

This textbook is aimed at engineering students whoare likely to come across magnetics applicationsin their professional practice. Whether designinglithography equipment containing ferromagneticbrushes, or detecting defects in aeronautics, somebasic knowledge of 21st century magnetism is needed. From the magnetic tape on the pocket credit cardto the read head in a personal computer, people runinto magnetism in many products. Furthermore,in a variety of disciplines tools of the trade exploitmagnetic principles, and many interdisciplinarylaboratory research areas cross paths with magneticphenomena that may seem mysterious to the

untrained mind. Therefore, this course offers abroad coverage of magnetism topics encounteredmore often in this millenium, revealing key conceptson which many practical applications rest. Sometraditional subjects in magnetism are discussed inthe first half of the book, followed by areas likely tospark the curiosity of those more interested in today’stechnological achievements. Although sometimessome aspects may seem difficult to comprehend atfirst, bibliography directs the reader to appropriatefurther study. Throughout the chapters, the studentis encouraged to discover the not-so-obviousassociations between different magnetics topics, a taskthat will prove to be at the very least rewarding.

U. S. SpacesuitsSpacesuits are far more than garments. They are apersonalized spacecraft that allows direct contact andinteraction with everything beyond our world, anda last refuge for survival in a disaster. Creating safe, reliable, and comfortable spacesuits is an ongoingchallenge that has spanned over four decades. "U. S.Spacesuits, 2nd Edition" by Kenneth S. Thomas andHarold J. McMann details the technical evolutionof U. S. spacesuits from their roots in high altitudeaviation and vacuum tube development to presentday, with an additional look into the future. Thisprimary source of spacesuit information explainsthe functions, historical development, and use ofspacesuits from a worldwide perspective. In this newedition, the authors update the story of U.S. spacesuitdevelopment and efforts, from the design challengesmodern engineers face to the latest roles of spacesuitsin space exploration. The book also provides a closeup look at NASA's new Constellation Space SuitSystem as well as Apollo prototype configurationsthat have been discovered since 2005. Also not in theearlier edition is a prototype and model of the Geminipressure suit and an explanation of its development. Finally, there are new insights into the suits usedfor the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, andInternational Space Station missions.

Semiclassical Approach toMesoscopic SystemsClassical Trajectory Correlations and WaveInterference

This volume describes mesoscopic systems withclassically chaotic dynamics using semiclassicalmethods which combine elements of classicaldynamics and quantum interference effects.Experiments and numerical studies show thatRandom Matrix Theory (RMT) explains physicalproperties of these systems well. This was conjecturedmore than 25 years ago by Bohigas, Giannoniand Schmit for the spectral properties. Sincethen, it has been a challenge to understand thisconnection analytically.  The author offers his readersa clearly-written and up-to-date treatment of thetopics covered. He extends previous semiclassicalapproaches that treated spectral and conductanceproperties. He shows that RMT results can in generalonly be obtained semiclassically when taking intoaccount classical configurations not consideredpreviously, for example those containing multiplytraversed periodic orbits. Furthermore, semiclassicsis capable of describing effects beyond RMT. Inthis context he studies the effect of a non-zeroEhrenfest time, which is the minimal time neededfor an initially spatially localized wave packet toshow interference. He derives its signature on severalquantities characterizing mesoscopic systems, e. g. dcand ac conductance, dc conductance variance, n-paircorrelation functions of scattering matrices and thegap in the density of states of Andreev billiards.

Earth. This book presents these findings in a waythat will be welcomed by amateur astronomers, students, educators and anyone interested in the Sun.Enhanced by many colour photographs, the bookcombines newly acquired scientific understandingwith detailed descriptions of features visible on theSun’s surface and in its atmosphere. In the past, observing the Sun has been left to academics withspecialised instruments, since solar observationhas been unsafe because of the risk of eye damage.  This book explains how amateur astronomerscan safely observe the various solar phenomenausing special hydrogen-alpha telescopes that are nottoo expensive. Amateurs can now make a positivecontribution to science by monitoring the Sun asprofessionals do. Amateurs can also access the solarimages taken by satellites via the internet. This bookhelps readers interpret and understand what theseimages are showing about the Sun, including the latest3D images. Solar observers will enjoy comparingtheir own solar telescope observations with thoseproduced by space probes such as SDO, SOHO,Hinode and STEREO, and further enjoy learningabout transits, eclipses, and space weather and howthe Sun compares to other stars in the universe.Themain purpose of this book is to present some of thefascinating solar phenomena in their full splendor toreaders through a variety of illustrations, photographsand easy to understand text. John Wilkinson is ascience educator with over 30 years experience inteaching science, physics and chemistry in secondarycolleges and universities in Australia. He is authorof over 100 science textbooks. He completed hisMasters degree and PhD in science education at LaTrobe University, Australia. Throughout his life hehas been a keen amateur astronomer and operateshis own observatory from his backyard.  His mainastronomical interests include the Moon, Sun andSolar System objects. John is also author of “Probingthe new solar system” and “The Moon in close-up”. His web site is http://astroscimac.com.
