give the candLe a chance

Lots of parties take place in the evening, where the lighting is inkeeping with the occasion or location. Candlelight, Chinese lanternsor garden torches give a special atmosphere, which you would liketo record. With the ash in the automatic position the chance is slim, because the location’s light will be ‘ ashed away’ as it were. The result is a brightly lit foreground and a dark background. You can prevent this by switching your ash to stand-by mode in combination with a

function that is suitable for darker situations. You’ll nd this on your camera under ‘S’, ‘Scene’ or ‘Scenery’.

R sIf you are using a ash, avoid someone looking like something from ahorror lm, with red illuminated eyes. This effect occurs because pupils areenlarged in the dark and do not react quickly enough to the ash. In the ‘redeye reduction’ mode, the camera rst produces a small preliminary ash. At the moment the photograph is taken, the pupils have had theopportunity to adjust.

P r s & Sp l e s

Are you shooting photographs of guests at a party? Take at least threephotographs of the same person or people. You often startle people when you point a camera at them. They become insecure, or even shy, andbehave differently from usual. Almost no-one stays themselves.

t s r l p r s l mIf you shoot several photographs, people get used to it and start to behavemore spontaneously. Certainly if you continue to talk to them. Their attention isfocused on you, instead of on your camera. There’s also a practical reason for this. The more people in a photograph, the higher the chance that someone has

their eyes closed, or is depicted less favourably. In brief: The more photographs, the higher the chance of a terri c shot!

When photographing a group of people you have to watch a

couple of things. Firstly, you want to be able to see everyone. So ensure that there is enough distance, but make sure that everybody can still be recognised. After all, a group photographis pointless if you can no longer see who is who. Is the grouptoo large? Shoot your photograph from above. For examplefrom a balcony. You should also prevent people from adopting alanguid pose while waiting for the photograph. Continue to talkto your audience and explain what you’re doing.Even better: tell them to talk to each other. Only at your signalare they all to look at the camera together. Repeat this a number of times. That way, you dissipate the tension and create asnatural a situation as possible.

An unforgettable concert of your favourite band. The hall, or stadium,is sold out and the atmosphere is impressive. It’s most probably dark,so you’ll be tempted to use your ash. This is pointless, becausethe singer or band is far too far away. What your ash will show inpinpoint sharp detail are the backs of the heads of the people in front of you. But you probably didn’t come for them.

In addition to shooting regular shots, try to pay attention to the details instead of thewhole thing. A ring that slides over a nger is far more penetrating than two peoplethat are doing ‘something’ with each other’s hands. A pen that oats over a sheet of paper says more than someone signing their signature. A knife disappearing intothe cake is more artistic than the obligatory photograph of the couple cutting it. Becreative and zoom in on the details that symbolise a situation or act. Also have alook at how the location has been decorated. Photograph the streamers, a tray of champagne glasses or a festively laid table just before the dinner commences. Here again, the same applies that a single artistically folded napkin can say morethan twenty covers in a row.

g m m m r s l s r m sIn this kind of situation, switch off your ash and try to get asmuch as you can from the situation. With a compact camera, you won’t see the people on stage in any kind of detail. You canshoot an attractive overview picture of the audience and thestage. Select the night mode under ‘S’, ‘Scene’ or ‘Scenery’ andhold your camera completely still. That might be dif cult in thecrowd, so look for a place where you have some support, suchas a wall or railing. You can also put your camera down. Then you can use the self-timer.

People dancing in an exuberant, smoky atmosphere. Half in the dark, half illuminated by ashing lights, and bright spotlights. Factors that don’t makeit any easier for a photographer. Even so, you can take exciting photographsin a setting like this. But you’ll have to take control of the situation yourself. If you want to achieve beautiful effects, where you cannot see any faces, but instead shadows in cool poses, adjust the ISO rating to make your cameramore sensitive to light. The possibilities differ on each camera, and the

ratings can run from 800 to 1600. Keep the camera very still, or move withthe subject.

‘in a diSco...’

New year’s eve, bon re night, the heavens above appear to beone giant sea of re. You want to photograph both the coloursand the forms the reworks make. Use the special mode on your camera under ‘S’, ‘Scene’ or ‘Scenery’. You’ll immediatelyrecognise the symbol. This feature automatically ensures aslower shutter speed. It’s very important that you hold thecamera completely still here. It’s best to use a tripod, but you

can also put the camera on the ground and use the self-timer.If you don’t just want to see what is happening directly above, increase the angle by positioning the camera at a slant, for example with a stone or box of matches.

People behave most spontaneously when they aren’t being watched. If you want to photograph the guests at a party or reception as naturallyas possible, it’s better if they don’t notice what you’re doing. Hold youcamera very still and, from a distance, zoom in on chatting people. Theywill very likely assume that you’re shooting a portrait of someone in theforeground. Study people for a while rst and try to discover if they havea certain posture that is a characteristic for them. Move around and playwith different angles, instead of standard ‘snaps’ taken from the front.

Your camera has many more possibilities than have been discussed here for getting more out of yourself and for takingmore attractive photographs. Many people are hesitant about delving deeper into the menu and trying out new functionsthat they don’t already know. Understandable, but certainly unnecessary. Experiment and don‘t let yourself be put off. And if you get stuck, switch your camera off and start again!

If you’ve been taking photographs for a while and the tips above are obvious to you, you may bene t more from thefollowing more advanced advice.

Say, for example, you want to photograph moving people in a darksituation. This could be newlyweds during the opening dance at thereception, or an action shot of someone in a disco. Then it is good andsometimes necessary to employ a slower shutter speed. You can set this yourself in the ‘S’, ‘Scene’ or ‘Scenery’ mode. Depending on the amount of ambient light and the speed of movement, you can vary from 1/30sto 1/15s or even 1/8s. This can produce attractive pictures. Certainly if a person’s body is almost entirely sharply in focus (so that the image is‘frozen’ during the ash), but for example his/her long hair is blurredin the shot. Observe someone’s movements carefully and try to followthem. Not easy, practice makes perfect.

The standard ash you have on your SLR (single-lens re ex)has a maximum range. This means that you can come upagainst its limitations during party photography. With an auxiliary ash, the possibilities are dramaticallyincreased. To ensure that the light from the ash doesn’t make your subject too ‘hard’, equip it with a special diffuser. The diffuser ‘spreads out’ the light from the ash, and your photographs will be warmer.
