Mr. Kobzik’s grade 1 class is hatching some great ideas using ‘New Pedagogies for Deep Learning’. The class has decided to explore the early life cycle of an egg and how it develops into a chick. This has led the students to write about, read about, and draw about chicks along with ask some great questions. How does the baby chick breath in the egg? How many days will it take? What does it look like at each stage? Why do some chicks not hatch? These students are thinking DEEPLY about learning!

The Primary EQAO Assessment for Grade 3 students will take place the first block on May 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, & 30. Similarly our Grade 6 students will be participating in the Junior assessment . If your child is in Grade 3 or 6, it is important to avoid scheduling appointments during these times. Completion of all components of the assessment by all students ensures that the most accurate data for your child and school is gathered. The results of the EQAO assessment pro-vide important data on individual student achievement in the areas of reading, writing and math-ematics and is a good predictor of your child’s success on the mandatory Grade 10 Literacy Test. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Studies confirm that parents who take an active interest in their children’s education are more likely to have high achieving children. The following is a list of things which parents can do to help ensure that their child has a positive experience with the assessment. Ensure that your child:

Is on time and in attendance for each testing date.

Has had the proper amount of sleep and rest.

Has had a proper breakfast and brings nutritious snacks for their breaks. Additional information may be obtained at the EQAO website: www.eqao.com

Talent Show This year’s Talent Show will take place on Friday, May 18th at 12:15 p.m. Parents and guardians are wel-come to attend.

Tech X 2.0 This year, the grade 6 teachers at EDPS have been working on a Ministry of Education project at our school. This project included bringing robotics into our grade 6 classrooms. We were able to pur-chase EV3's, which are also called Lego Mindstorms, and these robots are capable of doing many cool things, as our students learned. Through coding, students were able to bring their robots to life to do challenges. 7 of our students attended our Board's first robotics convention, Tech X 2.0. The students who attended were Chace B., Bronson B., Connor O., Gabe F., Mykola L., Samantha K., and Kyle M. 4 other students were part of the team but could not attend - Harley C., Darryl M., Liam C., and Kody B. The students who attended built 2 'battlebots' that were programmed to push other robots out of a ring. 1 of our robots made it to the quarter finals! Our team learned a lot through this, and we hope to be able to go further next year. The students also worked with Mrs. Mills to complete 10 challenges on a huge mat, such as programming a robot to outline a square or drive from one block to another. Our team learned a lot from this activity too. It was a great day, and we hope to go again next year!

ME to WE The ME to WE team is selling 2 rolling composters as is for $100 each. The money from this will go to our school in Sierra Leone. If anyone is interested in pur-chasing please contact Mrs. Mills.

Scholastic Book Fair Thanks to the parents, grandparents and student helpers of our recent book fair, and to all those who purchased books and other items! It was a success again!

Science Fair Our school science fair winners: Excellence in Engineering - Blake T. and Liam T. (tie) Health Science Award - Tyson V. Fantastic Physics - Tatum L., Lauren L. and Layla C. Excellent Earth Science - Krystal V., Taylor E., Jaden O. Cool Chemistry - Titan P. Beautiful Biology - Libby B., Katherine L. Grade 6 - First - Gabe F. Second - Asha J. and Egypt B. Third - Sierra M., Danika M., and Kylie B. Grade 7 - First - Liam D. Second - Carter J. Third - Mavric W. and Brady K. Grade 7 Popsicle Bridge contest First - Madison V. Second - Keysha T. and Ava Z. Third - Eric D. Grade 8 Rube Goldberg Projects First - Dustin M. and Gord S. Second - Jesse W. Third - Myles D. Great job from everyone! Science rocks here at EDPS!

Earth Month at EDPS April was Earth Month at EDPS and we had a lot of fun learning activities hap-pening. Our school learned about conserving energy, water conservation, and recycling on daily morning announcements. We had a recycling contest - winners not yet determined. We looked at how much garbage is produced in our school, and ways to keep recycling out of the garbage. Some classes did their own Earth Hour to remember why energy conservation is so important. Other classes did their own cool nature and environment activities. Great job EDPS! We hope to win Gold from Ontario Ecoschools this year for all your hard work! Stay tuned in May's newsletter to see what some of students learned.

The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, in collaboration with EDPS, sent nine students to The War Museum for the Annual Ottawa Heritage Fair. This event brings over 150 students from across the Ottawa region together to learn from each other. Students had the opportunity to prepare a project of interest to them, representing their culture, heritage, history, or interests. Four of our students were recognized for the work they did on their Traditional Algonquin Paddles.

The Renfrew County Joint Transportation Consortium (RCJTC) is responsible for providing transportation service to over 11,000 Renfrew County students in 53 different schools for both the Renfrew County Dis-trict School Board and the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board. Three routers are responsible for creating bus routes, setting up bussing, and making changes to bussing for these students. They work closely with the various bus Operators in each area to ensure safe, efficient, effective transportation to and from school. As safety of students is a priority, it takes time, and occasionally a physical review of a designated stop to process transportation requests, especially from mid-August to mid-October when there is a high volume of requests which results in delays in responding to individual requests.

What can you do to help?

Please log into the “Parent Portal” by visiting our website (www.onthebus.ca) after August 20th or at any

time throughout the regular school year to confirm your child’s bus information for the 2018-2019 school year.

If you haven’t yet subscribed to receive email notifications for cancellations and delays or timing or bus #

changes, we encourage you to do so by visiting our website and signing up for subscriptions at any time: Go to our website at www.onthebus.ca;
