At the time they needed to move from a house to a bungalow, their daughter was young and apart from advising that they fell in love with the property as soon as they saw it, they were also attracted to the village as it has the primary school, children’s play area within walking distance and had some great dog walks on the doorstep so met their key needs. The sellers are now looking to move in with their daughter in Devon – hence their no onward chain position.

ABOUT US: Chairman Mr. Tim Machin With a local presence of nearly 50 years, the Society exists to promote high standards of planning and architecture; promote civic pride; secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of historic structures or features and promote understanding of the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area. As a registered charity, we cover the south east corner of Lincolnshire covering the communities of Long Sutton, Little Sutton, Sutton Bridge, Wingland, Tydd St. Mary, Sutton St. James, Gedney Broadgate, Gedney, Gedney Dyke, Gedney Drove End, Dawsmere, and Lutton. The Society meets every 3rd Monday of the month at the Market House in Long Sutton at 7.15 pm. With varying speakers and occasional outings, for further information call 01406 362310 or email [email protected]

THE LONG SUTTON BIER Have you visited the Museum of Lincolnshire Life in Lincoln? The exhibits cover farm and industrial machinery, vehicles, recreated Victorian house and school rooms and shops and the galleries of the Royal Lincolnshire Regimental. The material on display in the museum is though just the tip of the iceberg of their collection of over 250,000 items. At the back of the museum, out of public view are warehouses stuffed to the gunnels with everything from pin cushions to mechanical diggers. It's all secure in a climate controlled environment waiting for the day that it might be displayed. One Item, that has been stored there for 30 years, is a hand drawn funeral bier, lent by Long Sutton & District Civic Society and the museum is now looking to make space in their warehouse and want the Society to take it back. The Bier was built by local waggon maker Frank E Walton in 1918 for Long Sutton Parish Council. Walton’s, on Market Street, Long Sutton was one of four wagon makers in the town at the peak of the coach building era. With the supporting trades of blacksmith, wheelwrights, trimmers, body-builders and harness makers, waggon and coach building was for a time one of the major local employers. Use of the funeral bier was probably short-lived though, as motorised transport would have taken over the job and Walton’s, who were also undertakers were known to be running a motor hearse by 1930. The Bier fell into disuse and was re-discovered in the 1970’s in a shed at a local cemetery. It spent time on show in the parish Church, occasionally used as a backdrop to the annual flower festival, before being loaned to the museum. NB “Waggon” was the preferred spelling a century ago of what we now call a wagon and appears as such on Walton’s company signage. Photo’s when Bier was first made and two who discovered Roger Lambourne and Frank Warrick.

Another spring has arrived, Horse Chestnut Trees are in full bloom, and we have started planting the plants purchased for the various tubs and containers throughout Sutton Bridge. Hopefully they will be as amazing as they were last year despite the dry summer. Our various flowerbeds have been pruned, weeded and assessed. As they mature they are looking as we envisaged when they were originally planted. Two of the beds are near the Curlew Centre The Jubilee bed (near the road) is full of colour, and the Community bed (which was planted up last year) is beginning to fill out and we are looking forward to seeing it mature over the coming years.

If you are interested in working with us for a few hours now and again, or know somebody who would be, please get in touch. The Library in the Curlew Centre will be able to give you details of a contact.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s a nude neighbour. Rightmove's Alternative Census reveals the nation’s ghost, UFO and nude neighbour sighting hotspots. Rightmove’s survey of over 30,000 people had revealed the neighbourhoods where you are most likely to spot a ghost, UFO or even a nude neighbour – according to the residents themselves.

Spooky sightings The ghost-sighting capital is Torquay where over a quarter of people say they have seen a ghost, compared to the national average of 17%. Second is Stoke on Trent and third is Wigan. Londoners are least likely to spot a spooky figure, with Kensington & Chelsea and Greenwich coming bottom of the list.

What’s that in the sky? When it comes to UFOs, Falkirk comes top - in this Scottish town one in five people (20%) say they have spotted one, compared to the national average of only 9%. Other hotspots are Bexley (17%) and Wigan (17%), which again makes it into third position.

Neighbouring nudes We hope the majority have been by mistake, as one quarter (25%) of the nation say they have spotted a nude neighbour. The more densely populated areas come top, with a massive 51% of people in the London borough of Hackney saying they have spotted one. Half of the residents of Wandsworth have also stumbled upon a nude neighbour, and just under half (47%) of people in Lambeth. Outside London the hotspots are Swindon (32%) Wakefield (31%) and Hull (31%).

Abiola Oni, Research Manager at Rightmove comments: “We created the Alternative Census as we wanted to find out more about the unusual goings on in local neighbourhoods, alongside the more typical things you might be interested in before moving there. Good transport links and high achieving schools are often the first things people think about, but in The Alternative Census we were able to get an entirely new perspective about the towns and cities people call home.”

You can check out the sighting hotspots alongside the internet dating and social hotspots on Rightmove’s Alternative Census microsite, available at www.rightmove.co.uk/viz/alternative-census/
