South Holland District Council tax band: D. The sellers of this property have lived here since 2006. Originally from outside the local area they were attracted to the property and the village of Sutton St Edmund, as they wanted to move to a small country village away from the hustle and bustle as they both work from home. As parents what also appealed were the benefit of the local schools having smaller class sizes than where they came from plus school transport being more available at primary, secondary & college levels. They enjoy that the area has lots of public footpaths for dog walks and the village has a sense of community spirit.

During their ownership of the property they have updated the kitchen, bathroom & décor amongst other touches which also include the feature lighting in the lounge and improving the patio area to the rear.

Whilst wishing to stay local their business has now expanded and the owners are now looking to move into the Long Sutton area where their business has relocated to. THE AREA: Sutton St Edmund is a rural village in the Lincolnshire District of South Holland with a population circa 500 people. Village amenities to include village hall, children’s play area/field, church and on the outskirts a touring/static caravan park. Fowlers Travel currently run a bus service between Sutton St Edmunds and Spalding Monday to Saturday. Nearby villages of Sutton St James (4 miles) & Gedney Hill (3 miles) offer further amenities including convenience stores, primary schools etc. For even wider amenities and commuting links the village is approx. 6 miles from the A47 and 8 miles from the A17. With access to larger towns/cities such as Holbeach (10 miles), Spalding (15 miles), Wisbech (10 miles), Kings Lynn (22 miles) & Peterborough (17 miles). ABOUT US. Chairman Mr. Tim Machin With a local presence of nearly 50 years, the Society exists to promote high standards of planning and architecture; promote civic pride; secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of historic structures or features and promote understanding of the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area. As a registered charity, we cover the south east corner of Lincolnshire covering the communities of Long Sutton, Little Sutton, Sutton Bridge, Wingland, Tydd St. Mary, Sutton St. James, Gedney Broadgate, Gedney, Gedney Dyke, Gedney Drove End, Dawsmere, and Lutton. The Society meets every 3rd Monday of the month at the Market House in Long Sutton at 7.15 pm. With varying speakers and occasional outings, for further information call 01406 362310 or email [email protected] The Society is at present planning for the year and at the moment have no confirmed dates for events, so we thought it would be nice to give newcomers and perspective newcomers a little history into how two Long Sutton places got their names.

Trafalgar Square Seventy seven years ago there stood three very large trees on the corner of Swapcote Lane and Bull Lane, the County Council gave orders to take down the trees and make alterations to the corner. On the opposite side of the road lived the Clerk to the Parish Council Mr. Stanley Piggins. There was much opposition at the time to the proposal and on a particular Sunday morning when Mr. Piggins looked out of his window he saw masses of decorations and placards, one of which read Here lies the body of Holland County Council and henceforth it shall be named Trafalgar Square. Mr. Piggins contacted Mr. Banks of the County Council and Mr. Banks said “the trees will come down” and first thing on the Monday morning they were felled. Later the quest for a name arose and Mr. Piggins reiterated Trafalgar Square and Mr. Banks said that will do!

Cinder Ash Park Explaining the origin of its name in the Lincs Free Press 25

th Feb 1964 Mr.

Harold Carbutt of an old established building firm said that his Grandfather had employed a man to riddle ashes to remove the dust for use in the mortar and then what remained was thrown away. The building firm being opposite what is now known as Cinder Ash Park was just a rough earth path and the builder started throwing all the waste over it, when it became covered in cinder ash it was then given it’s name! The Whale jaw bones were also erected there by a Mr. Robert Carbutt who obtained them from the Tydd district.

SSuuttttoonn BBrriiddggee CCuurrlleeww CCeennttrree By Helen Barber, Honorary Secretary The Sutton Bridge Community Centre Fund.

Over 10 years ago, some residents and parish councillors realised that the existing Village Hall in Sutton Bridge was not fit for purpose and would not be able to serve the growing town into the 21st century. They started a charity called Sutton Bridge Community Centre Fund (SBCCF) with the aim of raising funds to build a multi-use community facility on the edge of the Memorial Park in the heart of the town.

Over the years, surveys were carried out to establish the sort of building that the residents of Sutton Bridge would like to see and money was slowly raised. The Village Hall was finally condemned when the cost of necessary repair work soared. The building was demolished and the town lost its library and community hall. The site was cleared and for a while it looked as if funding for the new facility had stalled. Various plans were drawn up and negotiations with funders and potential users continued. Various committees came and went – each bringing the dream a little closer.

Finally everything was in place and charity President and local MP John Hayes initiated the building process in December 2010. The patience of local residents was rewarded when The Curlew Centre was officially opened on 10th December 2011. The work of the Sutton Bridge Community Centre Fund continues as the charity manages the new centre and continues to raise funds for the upkeep of the building. Everyone is delighted that The Curlew Centre is already proving popular and multiple bookings mean that its future is assured. WHAT’S ON:

CCiinnddeerr AAsshh PPrree--SScchhooooll By Rebecca Nicholls, Treasurer, Cinder Ash Pre-School.

What a fantastic few months it's been here at Cinder Ash Pre-School, but we don't plan on stopping there.

We already have so much planned for 2015 with improvements such as new windows. We're

planning new resources for inside and out to help us improve the way children in our care learn

through play and understand the world all around them.

Our dedicated staff and our committee work hard in ensuring our moto play, learn, and

grow: Staff continuously seek out new courses and qualifications, researching new and

exciting ideas to help provide the right tools and learning environment so the children do

exactly that. This year is no exception, with courses already booked and plans to join the

‘Forest Childcare Association' to help us get the most from our beautiful surroundings.

We also have many fun and exciting fundraisers such as our very popular half term messy craft mornings, a Valentines

Ball, Fun Run & many others, in which we hope not only to get the parents and children who use our facilities involved

in, but everyone from our local community involved in too.

Even though we have lots to do and organise over the coming few months, we still adhere to our open door policy for

parents and carers looking for childcare. Feel free to pop in at any time during the term, where our friendly staff can

provide you with all the information you need. We offer private & EYE funded sessions from the ages of 2-5 years, so

whether it's just a morning or everyday you'll find something here at Cinder Ash Pre-School to suit the unique needs of

you and your child!

Also this year we are offering a FREE* 6 hour childcare voucher to all

new admissions! However these are limited. If you are interested in

enrolling and taking advantage of this offer please phone 01406

258382 or email us at [email protected]

You can find out information on all our upcoming events and keep an eye on all the

improvements via our Facebook page www.facebook.co.uk/cinderashpreschool

With Christmas now a very distant memory the thoughts of the Sutton Bridge in Bloom (“SBiB”) team are well and truly in Spring mode. Plans for our summer planting have already been discussed and colour schemes and plant types chosen. These will be ordered during February/March for planting out in late May. The wildflower garden which was cleared and seeded in late 2013, showed some signs of flowers late last year. A wildflower garden usually takes 2-3 years to become established, so hopefully, with fingers tightly crossed, we should see an attractive array of different flowers this year. The seed sown was purchased from a specialist wildflower seed nursery so there should be a good variety of flowers and grasses which will attract insects, bees and butterflies. When the flowers are cut down in late summer, the cuttings will be left in a corner which may give wandering hedgehogs a home for the winter. Pat’s Garden on the Falklands Estate has had a good tidy up, board edging put in and two new signs erected. Apart from general maintenance, this garden will need some shrubs removed (which have become too big) and more flowering perennials put in. This should extend the season of interest at this garden. We have also put in board edging at the Jubilee Garden and we will also consider new planting in some areas of this garden. It is quite shady and prone to dryness so planting will need to be chosen with care. We have put a large wooden planter at the back of the garden and when this is planted up for the summer, there should be lots of colour spilling over the edge to add further interest. The Community Garden is now largely planted up. Obviously, there will need to be replacement plants put in over time, but at present, we should just be able to maintain the garden over the seasons. Billy’s Garden has also been tidied up and some large shrubs removed. A new sign has been erected and we shall be putting in some flowering perennials over the summer. The Plinth Garden has also benefitted from new wooden edging and a layer of mulch which should help keep the soil moist during the summer. The RAF Memorial will, subject to the required permissions being granted, be given a total refurbishment during 2015 and hopefully, will look all the better for it. Lot’s to look forward to in this new gardening year. If you would like to help, please do so - any new members would be very welcome.
