BrochureDescription: This brochure showcases my skills in Adobe Suite. I used InDesign,Illustrator and Photoshop to design this brochure for a ctional company to sellsweaters to men.

Programs used: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator

Date: December 5, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at leastfour quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshopand text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, andsubheaders.Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): Using the Adobe Suite programs I created anoriginal logo for the ctional clothing company “Modish Man.” I focused on a colorscheme that would attract men between the ages of 20 to 45. The Giraffe andlogo “Modish Man” were created in Illustrator and are all original. I then moved

the logo to the brochure project in InDesign. Using images from the Internet, I setup a style and design for the brochure to be attractive and interesting. Some ofthe images were cropped so that the text could wrap around the contour of theimages. I also knew that because contrast is king to legibility, I created white andteal boxes as background to the body copy and titles and subtitles.

LogosDescription: This project tested my skills will Adobe Illustrator to create a logo. Ichose a ctional wafe house franchise and created a simple logo and icon forthem.

Programs used: InDesign, Illustrator

Date: October 31, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Create three completely different, original logos to t a company orpersonal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logosor use previous designs. Market research: gather opinions from at least tenpeople about which logo appeals most to them. Use only the Illustrator tools tocreate and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated ares, symbols, etc..No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to traceit with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.) Rene one logowith variations for color

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I created the logo and icon on AdobeIllustrator. I used vector graphics to draw the wafe icon to look almost like a city

with buildings in the lighter colored squares and the background in the darkercolored squares. I used a layer cut to keep the outside of the squares to be cutoff in a circle so that it looks just like a wafe. I made sure to align the text withboth the wafe icon and the smaller text on the bottom. This logo looks goodwhether large or small because it is so simple. The color scheme includes golds, oranges, and yellows because those are the colors most associated with wafesand breakfast. The colors have good contrast, and the alignment of the text andthe icon create good ow and unity.

Web PageDescription: This web page project showcases my skills in web design and abilityto effectively and creatively work with both HTML and CSS.

Programs used: Text Wrangler

Date: November 21, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long

side is 300 – 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating yourlogo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Includerationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,) Acquire a workingknowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags – Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and alink to blog) Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSSprovided to format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least thefollowing: The h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for the paragraphs& list items, the background color, font families and add at least one css comment.)Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker. Open the HTML

page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins forprinting.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): This project was a two week learning effort. Iused a logo I created for a previous project and created a web page to describethe process of creating the logo. I began the rst week by learning HTML andcoding the basic web page. The basic web page and content was the easy part.I spent a lot of time the second week editing in CSS to make the page look morecreative. I chose fonts that were complementary to one another and helped keepthe same general feel of the actual logo. I used Adobe Illustrator to create andedit the logo, then saved it as a png le resized for the web so that it would notbe pixelated. I wanted to make sure the logo was big and took the attention right

away. After that, the headers were given more contrast by creating a rectangleof the same color as the background behind them, but with full opacity. Thebackground of the web page was an original image/texture that I created out ofIllustrator as well, using the pattern tool.

LetterheadDescription: I created a letterhead with my own original design of logo for actional company.

Programs used: Illustrator, InDesign

Date: November 7, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to

t a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previousdesigns. Don’t use photos or live trace. Use the new logo to design consistentlayouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are okay on business cardand letterhead as additional design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11,full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 andprinted above center on a vertical page. Apply typography rules, keeping smallcopy.Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plentyof white space. Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; noparentheses/ hyphens.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I transferred all the images I made for thelogo and letterhead over from the illustrator le into a new InDesign le. ThenI arranged all the images in the places they needed to be for the completedproject. I saved both the letterhead and business card InDesign les.

Business CardDescription: I created a business card with my own original design of logo for actional company.

Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; noparentheses/ hyphens.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): As always, to begin this project, I startedbrainstorming by using internet searches and Pinterest for inspiration forbusiness cards and stationery. I once I had a couple thoughts, I started drawingup sketches. One of the original ideas that stayed throughout the process wasthe idea of the “O” being a design of two to three half circles drawn out andplaced at mismatching sides.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I transferred a few sketches into vector graphics. I put apointed design coming off both sides of the circle then later changed it to themore obvious image of a key. I used the pathnder tool to cut and merge certainparts and pieces of the key icon. After nding that everyone I talked to liked the

blue color the most, I stayed with the split complementary color scheme. I feltlike the color scheme is good looking, but still gives a professional feel.WW

MontageDescription: This project proves my skill in making a montage of multiple images with aspiritual theme.

Programs used: Photoshop

Date: October 24, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and ow. Unify a layout

with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or moreimages together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills forlayout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a lter to one part of the image. Applytypography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…your choice). Format type:Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s). Select good qualityimages.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): In formulating a plan formy montage, I knew I wanted to use a scripture and since I have been studying the OldTestament, I wanted to use a scripture about the creation. Organizing for the montage Ibrainstormed what animal, forest and sky images might be appropriate. I found the good

contrasting background of the trees and found the orange and blue color scheme. Usingphotoshop, I blended all of the images using layer masks. I also adjusted the light anddark levels on the sky and the animals by using the selection tool and more masks to getthe right amount of light for each part of the montage. I used a texture with a mask on thetop of the montage to give it somewhat of a scratchy, grungy look. For ltering, I usedonly a sharpen lter to sharpen the trees and the animals. The text involves drop shadowsand overlay settings. The kerning for “Genesis 1:31” is expanded a little and the leadingbetween all three pieces of text is the same. I aligned the edge of the text with the backof the horse and with the top of the trees.

PhotodesignDescription: This photo design project is created with the intent to practicetaking a good quality photo and to learn design skills on photoshop. We alsoneeded a color scheme that the image had all the colors of the scheme and thenthe same colors were used one other time in the project besides the image.

Programs used: Photoshop

Date: October 17, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben PingelObjective: Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take aphoto to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust imagelevels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5×11 pagelayout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): The program I used wasphotoshop as part of the Adobe Suite. I focused on using a fun color scheme

to bring out a simple and exciting message. I used the rule of thirds when Itook the picture of the football player. I also focused on the football player byadjusting the camera’s settings to blur the background. I used photoshop tobrighten the image and create the design elements of the blue and orange ontop and bottom of the image. I used a font that is very similar to the font on theback of the player’s jersey so it would all match well. Although I used blue andorange design elements, I used white text so that there was not so much tensionbetween the contrasting colors.

FlierDescription: This is a ier created for my Comm 130 class demonstrating skillslearned in InDesign and FOCUS principles from class and the textbook.

Programs used: InDesign

Date: October 3, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic ier layout. Retrieve imageand logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo andInDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I used the InDesign programof the Adobe Suite to create this ier. I applied all of the principles of theFOCUS acronym for this project starting with formulating. I understood themessage and audience and created sketches to clearly present my message. Inorganizing, I made sure all objects and text were aligned in some way. I used theblack and white in the triangles and rectangles above the image and below thetext to bring both good contrast and unity. I simplied by decreasing the size of

the copy text and increasing white space throughout the ier.

Event AdDescription: This is an Event Ad created on Word in Microsoft Ofce. This isan example of what kind of design I can do in Word. In some cases when thebudget may be low, it is important to know how to design with out a designsoftware like InDesign. This project was for a made up event just to get morepractice with Word.

Programs used: Microsoft Word, Photoshop

Date: October 10, 2015

Course # and Section: Comm130-03

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Objective: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choosea color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learnto use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, includingPhotoshop.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): As mentioned, the programused to created this Event Ad was Microsoft Word. I focused on a good contrastand color scheme and simple repetition.
