CHICAGO LIBRARY & TRAIN STATIONARCH 374 - SPRING 2016

The objective of this studio project was to de-sign an L-Stop/Library in the city of Chicago. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is pro-posing a Brown Line stop at the corner of Di-vision and Orleans and this is where the site is located. For this project, the main design aspect I wanted to focus on was form. I did this by creating a curtain wall system that wraps around the building consisting of trian-gular panels, forming diamond shapes that create a wavy appearance in elevation view.

backgrounds to come together.

The form is the structure in itself. For the most part it is a standard steel structural framing system, but with emphasis on added lateral bracing. The diagonal mullions define the highlight of the form, and also func-tion as cross bracing, and the edges of the building cantilever out to pro-vide pop outs for people to look out

THEATER PUTXETARCH 476 - FALL 2016

The site for the project is located on a large irregu-lar city block predominantly occupied by the Jardins del Putxet, a small park. There is a very large hill sloping through the site and it in-cludes views of the city and the sea. At the intersection of the two streets surround-ing the site there is a his-torical building. We were given the option to either leave the building as is, de-molish the building, or only maintain parts of the build-ing such as the façade.

SITE PLAN

For my first design stu-dio project in Barcelona, I was given a partner to work with who was also from Illinois. For the first half of the project, we were also partnered with a Spanish architec-ture student. Different elements of the design were contributed to by all three of us, however, all of the drawings you see here were equally contributed to by myself and my Illinois partner.

The assignment consists of designing a small the-ater for contemporary theatrical performances for an audience of ap-proximately 200 people.

LIGHTING/ACOUSTICS

Our goal was to create an overall enjoyable experience for anyone visiting the theater. When enter-ing on the ground level, you are greeted by a triple height space that invites you upstairs to the lobby and café. This large space on the second floor can be enjoyed by guests before and after perfor-mances. There is also an outdoor terrace on the back side of the building that has views to the park. In the lobby, we have designed a sculptural element that resembles a tree. This “tree” symbolizes the forest of trees on the site and breaks up the space in the lobby to allow a better flow of circulation.

SECTION A

My team wanted to focus on preserving the existing building as much as possible, but transforming it as needed to meet the needs of the theater. We maintained the existing facades facing the streets, and kept the existing structure, but made chang-es to the floor plates as needed. The courtyard placed in the middle of the building acts as a bridge between the old and the new. We also have used some of the same brick and stone seen in the existing building in any new walls that we would build.

The seating hall and stage of the theater is a brand new building that we’ve strategically placed angled to the side of the existing building. The slope of the seating follows along the slope of the topography in the natural terrain. We’ve chosen to create a traditional theater with fixed seat-ing because this eliminates the hassle of constantly hav-ing to rearrange seats, and maximizes viewing efficiency. Also, seats can be purchased prior to the performance.

JACOBS CENTER RENOVATIONSUMMER INTERNSHIP - 2016

EXISTING

PROPOSED

During a 12-week sum-mer internship with the design firm Smith-GroupJJR in Chicago, I was given the opportuni-ty to take part in an “in-tern design challenge”, where one other intern and myself were tasked with creating a concep-tual design for the Ja-cobs Center at North-western University, a project they would soon be working on in real life.

The renovation takes place as the building is filled with 8 new majors of study. The Jacobs Center is located right on the entryway to the university and the path along it drives people to the center of campus.

However, it is currently very hidden from view by dense landscaping, and underutilized in the outdoors, which is un-fortunate because of the very large amount of students that pass through there every day.

After addressing these issues among others, we came up with the fol-lowing design concepts.

CAMPUS HONORS HOUSEARCH 374 - SPRING 2016

The goal of this project was to design a new house for the Campus Honors Program. I want this new house to encourage students to excel, and create a strong, diverse interaction between interior and exterior spaces, as well as student and staff spaces.

I want the house to be immersed within the site and fit in with the university, while also making it stand out. I want everyone to know that it is the Campus Honors House and have it be a memorable building of the university. I accomplished this by having the corner of Goodwin and Oregon highlighted in such a way that it stands out. The shaded area with plants and benches will be very welcoming to both stu-dents and staff, providing a pleasurable walk for anyone entering from that corner.

I want visitors to feel very welcomed when they enter which is why I’ve made the entrance an all glass atrium space. When you enter, you are immediately greeted by the reception desk and then can go up the grand curved staircase, or visit the student lounge. These three things be-ing placed right at the entrance show a clear di-vide, and connection between the three sectors of the building: student, staff, and circulation.

SECTION A-A

I also want there to be a place where students and staff can meet in the middle which is the court-yard. The courtyard is the highlight of this project because it is located on center with everything else in the building. It lies directly on the main central axis. The courtyard is important because it contributes to the exchanging of ideas amongst students of all different backgrounds and majors.

KICKAPOO BOATHOUSE & CAMPGROUNDSARCH 373 - FALL 2015

- The task for this project was to design a campsite that would include a boathouse, sleep-ing structures that can house 20-25 people, and a dock.

- We visited the actual site at Kicka-poo State Park several times to get an idea of the scale, atmosphere, and overall feel of the place.

WEDDING HALL AT THE ARBORETUMARCH 373 - FALL 2015

- This gathering space that I have designed can be used for a variety of events includ-ing weddings, graduation par-ties, and other family events.

- It is strategically placed deep in the Arboretum, far from the noisy Lincoln Avenue, to allow guests to feel safe and seclud-ed when attending events.

- Circulation is a key part of my design as the arrow shaped plan promotes movement. The many exterior doors en-courage visitors to go out and explore the Arboretum be-fore and after their ceremony.
