Workflow of the Month – How to generate Stratal Slices Workflow in Petrel 2007.1 ? Stratal Slices describe depositional sequences taking account of changes in thickness. Usually , amplitude information along an interpreted surface can be extracted and then subsequential samples can be taken above or below that sequence. Stratal Slicing, or Proportional Slicing div ides an interval between two main seismic horizons into a fixed number of subintervals that are uniformly distributed. The advantage of this method is a much higher resolution of stratigraphy features, v isible in the horizontal map-display. The following simple workflow prov ides a s traightforward and effective way to create any number of Stratal Slices between two surfaces and then, using the new “Surface Attribute” process in Petrel2007.1, it extracts a series of amplitude values along those surfaces. Starting point is two interpreted seismic horizons -Upper00 (green) and Upper1(blue), displayed below in the 3D window as well as in the Interpretation window. Using the Petrel Workflow Manager, a small workflow creates 10 stratal layers between the main horizons. The user can define the amount of slices to be generated by changing the value of the variable $S TRAT.
As a second step, the created intermediate surfaces are used within the same loop as input to the “Surface Attribute” process in order to extract the amplitude value of the seismic volume along them. Please note that this workflow presented at the top of the next page can be further expanded to allow for better object management in the tree.

The images below show a Basemap v iew of the Stratal Slices 6 and 7, showing in very good detail the distribution of a channel along the flanks of the hill. The corresponding Inline is displayed in the image above and the channel feature is highlighted inside the red circle.
The generated Stratal Surfaces are shown in the Interpretation Window in the image on the right side; please note that the thickness changes proportionally , which is one important feature of these surfaces.
