Welcome to Perthshire Open Studios 2009 - a celebration of visual arts and crafts across Perthshire and Kinross, with seventy-nine venues. Following on from a very successful inaugural event last year, we are delighted to host a bigger and better second annual Open Studios.
Why Open Studios? The PERTHSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS event offers you the unique opportunity to get to know local artists and makers. In the studios you will fi nd a variety of artwork including paintings, sculptures, photographs, stained glass, woodwork, ceramics, jewellery, metalwork and much more. Visiting the studios will give you a chance to understand where artists’ inspiration comes from and to ask questions about their work. Most artists will have work in progress or will give demonstrations, others will run workshops and you might even be tempted to have a go... in all cases you will be able to purchase or commission pieces of original work directly from the artists.
To make the most of Perthshire Open Studios remember that most artists/makers/galleries can also be contacted before and after the event.

How to use the brochureThis PERTHSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS brochure will give you all the information you need to make your visit a rewarding experience.
Entry to the venues is free and planning days out is easy by browsing through this brochure and following the detailed maps for each of the six coloured routes. Also visit the showcase exhibition hosted by the Ealain Gallery at Roy Sim Antiques, Mill Street, Blairgowrie. The Gallery will exhibit work by Perthshire Open Studios members from the offi cial launch at the Gallery on 28 August at 6.30pm through to the end of the Open Studios event on 13 September 2009.
Each studio has a number and an individual brochure entry where names, addresses and directions are provided together with the details about the artwork on show.
The middle pages of the brochure have a map with all the studios marked on it; these are located on colour-coded routes that spread out all over the region. You may wish to follow a route or choose to visit studios according to what they offer. At the back of the brochure a directory lists all the names of the participating artists, their studio number and their art form.
When out visiting look out for the directional signs displaying the POS logo.
To make your tour more enjoyable we have suggested cafes and eating places on each route where you should fi nd a good welcome.

Drawing on a wide variety of influences from African savannas to classical Italian, I enjoy capturing the diversity and vibrancy of the natural world and our landscapes. I try to represent nature in a pure form in acrylic, oil, guache, and water colour. Recently I have been experimenting in the Medieval techniques of egg tempera which involves painstakingly creating the ground with gesso and the medium by grinding egg yolk and pigment. Although requiring infinite patience, it allows the work to be finely detailed.

Old wall surfaces of the old barn, intimate spaces where fl owers clamber freely and the ever-changing light on the surrounding landscape of the Strathmore valley fuel Roz’s imagination to create mixed media paintings created within her potting shed studio. Judith produces stained, fused and slumped glasswork - like bright, transparent jewelled pieces, her work is inspired by nature in all its many forms.

Email: [email protected]
Iona paints expressive land and seascapes, recognising that painting is about the tussle to communicate. She recognises the truth in the words: “Imagination is not, as is sometimes thought, the ability to invent; it is the ability to disclose that which exists”. John Berger
Painting
Directions: Follow the High Street in Auchterarder until you reach the heart of the town. The gallery is situated in the courtyard between Café Kisa and the Golf Inn. There is limited parking.
Mairi ClarkPainting
Much of Mairi’s evocative paintings are inspired by the Scottish coastline, particularly the East Neuk, where the ever changing inter-play between sea, sky and landscape affect colour and mood. ‘It is very important to me to capture a free and energetic mood in my work’
Susan Cook
Susan likes to work on both sculpture and painting at the same time. One compliments the other, the mediums crossing over; painting on plaster with watercolours and sculpting in cement and wood with painted parts added. ‘I also use re-cycled materials whenever possible, enjoying the possibilities an old piece of metal or driftwood offers.’
