Perth and SurroundsPerth could be considered the perfect city. Warm sunny weather year round, acres of parkland and a river that meanders through the city from vineyards to the sea. Cruise the Swan River, head to the beach or dine out in style. Discover the city on foot with a stroll through Kings Park and Botanic Garden. Shop up a storm at an array of boutiques or browse the art galleries of Kings Street.

Head out to Fremantle for its laid back atmosphere and local history. Hit the weekend markets or grab a bite overlooking the harbour. When it’s time to head for the water, ride the ferry to Rottnest Island for white sand and snorkelling. At the beach holiday hot spots surrounding Perth – from Mandurah in the south to Mullaloo in the north – it’s all about swimming, surfing and relaxing. Or for award winning wineries and gourmet food take a drive to the Swan Valley.

Margaret River Wine Region and SurroundsFoodies can find their slice of heaven in the Margaret River Wine Region. Famed for its world-class wineries and locally grown produce, the region is a place to indulge in the pleasures of the palate. With more than 100 wineries as well as gourmet food experiences ranging from cheese to chocolate and venison to olive oil, it’s a food lover’s paradise.

Go beyond the rolling green vineyards and fertile farmland to discover another side of the Margaret River Region. Stunning beaches boast some of the best surf in Western Australia, ancient forests are home to giant Karri trees and underground caves feature wonderful formations. The coastline offers up some other unexpected delights including Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and its dramatic views, the longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere in Busselton, and playful whales in Augusta and Geographe Bay (in season).

With its natural diversity, world-class wineries and accommodation you won’t want to leave.

South CoastFor the scenery alone, the south coast is a must see. For towering Karri forests, some of the tallest trees in the world, and picturesque vineyards, head south east of Margaret River to Pemberton.

Fish or canoe down the peaceful streams. Continue your itinerary around the national parks and wineries.

The seaside views from Walpole to Esperance make for the perfect self drive holiday. Jump in the car and cruise past coves, bays and inlets. Be sure to stop over for fresh seafood by the beach.

Karijini and The Golden OutbackColourful characters, genuine hospitality and quintessential Australian landscapes – the Golden Outback has it all. Get a taste for the real outback in Kalgoorlie and the Goldfields. See reminders of Kalgoorlie’s wild past as a gold rush town in its heritage buildings and museum or tour a multi-million dollar open pit mine.

Continue north to the marine paradise of World Heritage Listed ningaloo Reef. It’s an aquatic playground with coral gardens just metres from white sandy beaches in Coral Bay. And the experience of a lifetime awaits in ningaloo Marine Park. From April to July you can have the ultimate wildlife encounter, one of the few places in the world – swimming with the world’s biggest fish, the Whale sharks.

1. Swim with Whale Sharks Swim with the world’s largest fish the Whale shark. Getting up close and personal with these gentle giants is a humbling experience you won’t forget. They visit World Heritage Listed ningaloo Reef each year between April and July. (see page 57 for details)

3. Busselton Jetty Extending 1.8 kilometres over stunning Geographe Bay, the Heritage Listed Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the southern hemisphere. Step aboard the Jetty Train, visit the Interpretive Centre, Cultural Heritage Museum and Underwater Observatory. (see page 36 for details)

How to Get ThereBY AIR Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar service Perth from capital cities throughout Australia. There are two regional airlines in Western Australia. Virgin Australia Regional Airlines operate flights between Perth, Exmouth, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Esperance, Ravensthorpe, Albany and Busselton. Skippers operates flights between Perth, Carnarvon, Leonora and Monkey Mia.

BY RAIl Experience the last remaining trans-continental train journey, the Indian Pacific. This amazing rail journey begins in Sydney, traverses Australia from coast to coast before concluding in Perth (operates in reverse). Alternatively, board the train in Adelaide before continuing on to Perth.

Travellers should drive at a speed that suits the road, vehicle, weather conditions and their driving experience. In remote parts of Western Australia driving slowly on gravel roads is recommended. It is not uncommon to encounter roaming wildlife on the side of the road. Particular care should be taken when driving at dawn and dusk, and if possible avoid driving at night.
