Open Ended Questions

For Concord Public Schools & Concord-Carlisle Regional School District / Superintendent: 1. Please share why you are interested in this position and your unique qualifications for it.

Concord-Carlisle’s core values of academic excellence, respect and empathy, equity, collaboration and ongoing improvement align with the values that guide my approach to leadership. Instruction and curriculum must be rigorous and student centered. Education must focus first on building relationships and making connections among individuals and groups. Even high performing districts must strive to improve and meet the needs of all students.

In 2013, I joined the leadership team of the Duxbury Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent. The culture of innovation and creativity rekindled my love of professional learning and passion for trying new things. Duxbury’s personal technology program, iConnect, was the first and most prominent project that allowed for this opportunity. With enthusiasm, I planned professional development for teachers that would build their technical skills first and then enhance their pedagogical skills to foster student-centered learning environments. I grew to love sharing our experiences and efforts during presentations at local and state conferences such as MassCUE and the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents. I then relished in the opportunity to co-present and collaborate with districts like Duxbury across the country at the national CoSN and AASA conferences. I would look forward to the opportunity to further Concord-Carlisle’s current technology program. Duxbury is also exploring an integrated community approach at the high school setting. Our regular conversations with Michael Goodwin of the Rivers and Revolutions program provide first hand knowledge of the same innovative approach in Concord. I would relish the opportunity to enhance and grow this mindset.

My communication and organizational strengths are an integral role in creating comprehensive academic and administrative systems. Systemic processes are in place to manage teacher evaluation, house all of the district’s student performance data and manage and

Question Continued interact with curriculum maps across all of Kindergarten through Grade 12. As a result, data analysis and interpretation occurs at new levels across curriculum, instruction and assessment which are undoubtedly the three critical elements to student success. Similarly, administrative processes including hiring, securing substitutes and tracking of professional development are streamlined to allow for efficiencies and the possibilities of future effectiveness. To complement my organizational abilities, I am a firm believer in frequent, ongoing and appropriate communication with all stakeholders. I currently provide weekly updates to staff and administrators as well at least monthly updates to the parent community and Duxbury School Committee. In between this formal communication are daily efforts to share information, problem solve and ensure personal communication remains the preferred and effective method to make connections and resolve conflict.

One of my personal strengths is building relationships between people. Among my favorite moments are those where I meet with committees of teachers, parents and students to critically reflect on our current status and brainstorm future directions. I also fully immerse myself in the culture of intellect and education offered by involved and invested parents and community members. This degree of dialogue and understanding allows for great professional and education conversations which I find create conditions for mutual growth. I work closely with the Duxbury Teachers Association in a collaborative, cooperative fashion and know I could bring the same rapport to Concord. As we did as eager and enthusiastic young teachers in Natick many years ago, I believe that Concord Teachers Association President Merrie Najimy and I would partner to lead Concord with that same energy and commitment to a high quality, respectful learning environment.

Finally, it is of great importance that I view students as any district’s most valued members. It has been my pleasure to interact with many high school students who participate on various district committees. On several occasions, the articulate and honest opinions of these young adults allowed every adult in the discussion to step back and realize what was most important which is the impact adult decisions have on our students. Elementary students are thrilled for a classroom visit and will immediately and enthusiastically explain their work to me. Among the greatest values to me personally is my impact on students who face challenging situations such as homelessness or struggles to reach graduation. Through the programming and supports I creatively and collaboratively fostered for these students, their success was the result. The most recent example was a graduation picture shared when one of the 2016 seniors graduated from an online credit recovery program in cap and gown proudly displaying a diploma she earned in the month of October.

Concord-Carlisle’s qualities enhance and complement my strengths. It would be a privilege to have the opportunity to lead the district into the future.

For Concord Public Schools & Concord-Carlisle Regional School District / Superintendent: 2. Please list the five accomplishments in your professional career of which you take the greatest satisfaction and why you do so.

My professional accomplishments are the result of vision, relationships and resilience. I view every experience as an opportunity for my personal and professional growth while focused on having the most positive impact possible on the learning environment of students. As I discuss the accomplishments of which I am most satisfied, I recognize that none of the efforts were done in isolation but the product of collective efforts. They are a result of my leadership approach which instills the confidence and direction needed for success.

Among one of my most satisfying accomplishments is the success of the iConnect instructional technology program. I began my current position of Assistant Superintendent slightly over a year before the planned distribution of 1100 laptops to students in grades eight through twelve. During that year, I fostered a direction for professional development and the logistical details ensuring that, not only would distribution go smoothly, but teachers would be comfortable with the new technical tools available to students. Since September of 2014, we expanded the program to include all four schools and are now focused on pedagogical and instructional shifts. It has been my privilege to share our journey at local, state and national conferences. With great satisfaction, the district was recently named an Apple Distinguished Program.

Secondly, Duxbury’s leadership team is of singular mindset and focus. This is a result of the team’s cohesive vision. The current superintendent and I created a master vision and hired over one-third of the current leadership team. These hiring decisions and ongoing collaboration built a team that trusts one another, manages conflict respectfully which ultimately benefits the direction of the district. For example, a newly hired teacher shared with me that she felt this cohesiveness as she was hired by one team of administrators and then attended orientation led by myself and several different leaders. Her feedback on the team’s seamless alignment was evidence of the high functioning nature of this leadership team which I proudly facilitate, participate and collectively lead.

Question Continued

My systemic leadership led to the effective creation of a curriculum review cycle in Duxbury is my third most satisfying accomplishment. The cycle results in ongoing improvement efforts that do not allow for stagnation. Through this process, the engagement of teachers is critical. I am continually impressed by the professional and reflective nature of Duxbury’s teachers. Open and honest communication among lateral and vertical colleagues allows us to highlight our strengths and needs. These same teachers then open themselves to the input of outside consultants and review their feedback objectively. As a result, the cycle ensures that current research, best practices and aligned curriculum are in place as well as a culture of reflection and professional growth. I look forward to creating similar systemic processes with other professionals.

As a fourth accomplishment, I built strong connections with the community. As principal, a capstone to these relationships occurred when, under my leadership, the elementary school raised over $100,000 to replaced an outdated playground. 300 volunteers came together over a three-day weekend to build an impressive play structure for students to use during the day and the community to use off of school hours. In Duxbury, my relationships with the community extend to many of Duxbury’s incredibly invested community groups including The Parent Connection and The Duxbury Education Foundation. These partnerships have provided effective programming for students and parents as well as seeding funds for district initiatives and professional development.

Finally, of all of my accomplishments, the one that is most satisfying was also the most challenging. The elementary school of which I was principal received a budget cut of $1.2 million of a $5 million budget in one round of budget reductions. The result was a loss of 23 staff members. Students in grades Kindergarten through three were suddenly in class sizes of over 30. A school that had been relieved of overcrowding had to welcome back the entire fourth grade class after they had moved to a new school three years before. Meeting student needs became increasingly difficult. MCAS dropped by the end of that school year. Staff morale was very low. One year later, as the building’s leader, we regrouped and focused on improving student outcomes to the best of our ability. The superintendent at the time emphasized school improvements despite the lack of resources. With determination and resilience, the staff and I analyzed data, targeted interventions and student performance improved. Upon my departure in 2013, the school returned to a Level 1 status. This experience allowed me to understand and appreciate the importance of a strong educational leadership and positive mindset.

July  2016    To  Whom  It  May  Concern:       It  is  rare  to  see  an  administrator  at  the  central  office  level  working  with  children  and  viewing  their  accomplishments  on  a  fairly  regular  basis,  yet  this  is  what  Dr.  Hunter  does.    She  can  be  seen  reading  to  children  or  asking  how  they  solved  a  math  problem.      As  the  principal  of  Alden  School,  I  have  had  the  opportunity  to  work  with  Dr.  Hunter  for  the  past  three  years.      She  is  a  professional  committed  to  providing  quality  education  for  all  children.       Dr.  Hunter  was  a  former  elementary  principal  prior  to  her  tenure  in  the  Duxbury  Public  Schools  but  in  a  very  short  time  became  well  versed  in  the  secondary  level  tasks.    She  had  identified  this  as  an  area  of  weakness  when  joining  the  team  but  is  now  a  strong  leader  in  K-‐‑12  curriculum  and  instruction.    Dr.  Hunter  led  our  district  in  becoming  more  vertically  aligned  in  all  areas.    She  saw  the  need  to  develop  a  curriculum  cycle  to  keep  Duxbury  a  top  preforming  school  district.    Her  vision  is  whole  and  she  always  keeps  the  big  picture  in  mind.    This  is  important  for  comprehensive  decisions.       Dr.  Hunter  has  had  many  accomplishments  during  her  years  as  Assistant  Superintendent  in  Duxbury  and  prior  administrative  accomplishments.  Her  pursuit  and  desire  to  become  a  superintendent  is  a  logical  next  step.    Any  district  would  benefit  from  her  solid  work  ethic,  strong  leadership,  and  dedication.      I  have  sat  on  many  committees  with  Dr.  Hunter  and  she  has  always  been  very  thorough  and  organized.    The  elementary  math  committee  is  only  one  example  of  her  accomplishments.    A  new  math  program  was  adopted  and  accepted  by  100%  of  the  teachers,  not  an  easy  task  with  a  large  staff.    Her  leadership  to  allow  teachers  to  pilot,  discuss,  observe  and  vote  brought  total  consensus  in  adopting  the  new  program.           Dr.  Hunter  has  streamlined  processes  using  technology  for  assessments,  curriculum  mapping,  student  data,  substitute  teachers,  teachers  requesting  time  off  and  registration  of  students,  all  to  be  more  efficient.      She  has  put  many  new  initiatives  in  place  since  arriving  in  Duxbury.           If  you  would  like  to  further  discuss  Dr.  Hunter  and  her  candidacy  to  become  a  superintendent,  please  feel  free  to  contact  me  at  781-‐‑934-‐‑7630  or  my  cell  781-‐‑258-‐‑9143.        Sincerely,      Karen  Whitaker  Principal,  Alden  School
