Police and Law Enforcement officials have begun writing fines for traffic infringe- ments in front of the station, police confirm, and even police vehicles have not escaped the fines. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Willi- ams says there is “an average of four to six accidents per week” in front of the police sta- tion. “[This is] because of people disobeying traffic rules by parking in front of the gate of the police station and on the red line in front of the station and the court,” says Willi- ams. “The Station Commander, Brigadier Cass Goolam, in cooperation with Law Enforce- ment and Traffic, is ensuring that stiff traffic fines are being issued to offenders.” Williams says to date they have issued R20 000 worth of fines in the vicinity for vari- ous traffic infringements. Cars parking in front of the station block one of the two carriages of the street. But al- though many still make use of the space in front of the station and court, Goolam ac- knowledges a difference. “The fines have been effective, although we cannot say adequate, as motorists are be- ing fined on a daily basis in the same stretch of street. We are considering combining the issuing of the fine with towing away the transgressing vehicles,” he says. “The red line is an indication that vehicles are not permitted to stop in the red demar- cated area at all as it will constitute a danger or an obstruction to other traffic in terms of the National Road Traffic Act,” explains JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and securi- ty. “The person stopping or parking a vehi- cle on a red line is committing a traffic of- fence. Fines are issued to ensure compliance with the National Road Traffic Act and thus promote road safety and to ensure the free flow of traffic – in this instance, entry and exit from a parking area. The fine for park- ing or stopping on a red line is R1000.” Goolam says fines have always been is- sued in this area, but have been in the spot- light more so recently. Smith adds this is not unique. “Similar ac- tion has been taken in the past in the vicinity of the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court as well as Cape Town Magistrate’s Court,” he says. Goolam says this should act as a fair warn- ing to all transgressors. “We are going to be escalating focus on transgressing motorists because the illegal packing is causing accidents almost daily in front of the police station. We have part- nered with City’s Traffic and Law Enforce- ment departments as the issuing of traffic fines is one of their core functions or man- dates,” says Goolam. The station is no longer warning motor- ists, says Goolam, as drivers should have been taught to understand traffic signs in the process of obtaining their driving licen- ces. “If not, the fines should educate them sufficiently. I am so serious about this mat- ter that even police vehicles are being fined for parking illegally in that vicinity.” V Share your thoughts with us. Email Letters@peo- plespost.co.za.

‘Rapists are useless’ – Chaka ChakaTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

“Today is the day we all sayenough is enough. Rape and

abuse has no colour and it doesn’tcare whether you’re white orblack, but today it must stop.”These were the words of legend-

ary musician Yvonne ChakaChaka, a guest speaker at the 11thlunch of 1000 Women UnitedAgainst Domestic Violence andAbuse, held at the Cape Town In-ternational Convention Centre(CTICC) on Thursday last week.Women from different areas

came together to speak aboutabuse and said it was time theystood together to put an end to it.The day was also used to celebratewomen who have stood tall to talkabout their circumstances. Agroup ofwomenwho are part of the“I’m Beautiful Project” spokeabout their different experiencesof violence and abuse. The exhibition will be at the

CTICC for a month. Thereafter itwill move to the Media24 buildingbefore it goes to Pick n Pay’s offi-ces.In South Africa, one in every

four women is caught in an abu-sive relationship. Every six days,a woman is murdered by her inti-mate partner.More shocking is that a woman

is raped every 25 seconds of everyday. These horrific statistics are

nothing new to people living inSouthAfrica as the escalating levelof abuse is broadcast 24hours aday

via media channels. The luncheon was a call to all

South Africans to stand togetherand speak out against the abuse ofour women.Chaka Chaka said now was the

time to fight forwomenso that theywon’t be blamed by the next gener-ation. “All men who rape and areabusive, are useless and stupid. They are notworth living.Aswom-en it’s timewe takea stand.Womenshould be nurtured and looked aft-er by men. We must work witheach other to complete one anoth-er, not to compete. Its high timemen learned to respect women. Weare not here to compete, but to beequals and work together.”She added that mothers have a

huge responsibility to play if thewar against violence and abusewas to be won. “Mothers, let’steach our children that women arenot doormats. They must be re-spected. Let’s teach our kids thatwomen are important and theyshould be valued, not trampled on.It starts at home. If we raise goodsons who respect women then wehave won the war.”Turning to women she told them

to speak against rape and abuse.“Women need to start talking

about these things, not tomake funof women being abused. In SouthAfricawehave a huge problem.Welook the other waywhen things be-gin to happen. We need to stand to-gether. Women, talk to one anoth-er. Don’t stay in an abusive rela-tionship. If he loves you, he won’tabuse you. Some stay because theyhave nowhere to go. Some stay be-

cause the man is the provider. No,God gave you your brains andhands – use them to work for your-self. Men are here to hold ourhandsandwewalk together sidebyside. We all can’t make it on ourown – we need each other as manand woman, but we should never, ever allow ourselves to be abused.”

Wendy Ackerman, patron of theevent, said shewas happy that a lotof people came out to say they havehad enough.“Themessagehas to go out there.

Touchmorewomen andwe start totalk about these things and we dosomething about it. The power ofyour voice has to be heard. At the

moment women’s voices are not asloud, but the message is very cleartoday – we’ve had enough andabuse and rape must stop now.”The money raised at the event

will help to provide access to skills, knowledge and resources and toprovide seed funding to women-ledorganisations.

Liverpool comes to Mitchell’s PlainSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_lee121

Mitchell’s Plain has been put onthe soccer map as a local sup-

porters’ club based in Westridgegets international recognition. The Liverpool Supporters’ Club

CapeTownNorth received their of-ficial status as a registered and rec-ognised supporters’ club of the fa-mous soccer club in February thisyear. The club’s official home turf is at

Premium Sports Bar in Westridge. To date the club has hundreds of

members from across Cape Town.Neil Ruiters, chairperson of the

club, says registering was impor-tant to them.“There aremany fans in the area

that wanted to belong to Liverpooland go beyond just supporting thesoccer club,” says Ruiters.William Goliath, bar owner and

additional member of the commit-tee, says they will soon have a liveonline application form to becomepart of the club.Goliath says interested parties

can also request application formsvia Facebook or come to the pub ongame days.“Game days are full and we in-

vite other supporters clubs to come

watch the games when we playeach other,” says Goliath. But beyond the rivalry on the

field, Earl Pentolfe, member re-sponsible for the disciplinaryboard, says they have no rivalryamong each other as supporters.

“We make sure there is no fight-ing and the code of conduct is up-held. If anyone gets out of line, theywill be asked to leave,” says Pentol-fe.“We had visitors from the UK

and Scotland and they were

amazed. They said this was un-heard of in England. Supportersdon’t get along.”In October, the club will become

the Liverpool Supporters’ ClubCape Town, as an application from

another Cape group was unsuc-cessful, making them the only offi-cial one on Liverpool records.Recently all supporters’ clubs

got together to host a tournamentof their own.Thenewclub, in its infancy, took

home the winning trophy and an-other, naming them the best sup-porters’ club for the day.“We are all friends and we all

support different teams for differ-ent reasons, but we respect that. When we get together, there is uni-ty among rivals,” says Ruiters. Some of the benefits have been

meet-and-greets with some of theplayers and access to the officialsupporters’ stands at Anfield Sta-dium.But the group have bigger hearts

than just that which beat for clubsoccer. This year the fan club linked up

with Ithemba Labantwana inKhayelitsha and will continue toassist them in various aspects.Pentolfe says moving forward

theyhope to brand thenameacrossCape Town and also continue withtheir CSI initiatives.V The Club will host an open day and official launch on Friday 1 July. For more information visit their Facebook page: LiverpoolSupporters Club Cape Town North.

“I call itmycause album,”AuriolHays says of her upcoming re-

lease. The local singer will be officially

launching her aptly namedDream-ing Music at a secret location onSaturday 28 May and with it, shehopes to give a voice to those whoneed it.While she’s very aware that the

songs on her new album may notsuit commercial radio, Auriolsays: “They come from a very deepplace and they are meant to createa difference.”One of the songs on the album,

for example is “Come to Me”,which she wrote to raise aware-ness about “The Arctic 30” a groupof Greenpeace activists and jour-nalists who were arrested for pro-testing against oil drilling in theArctic. She was invited to perform the

song on a Greenpeace boat lastyear when their Rainbow Warrior

was docked in Cape Town.Another of her songs “Pray for

Rain” has been used by the DressJozi Campaign, an organisationthat helps care for the homelessresidents of Johannesburg.“That’s a wonderful thing.”Then there’s her track “Help me

Out” which has been used by theSouth African Depression andAnxiety Group (SADAG).“I like that the music is being

used by organisations that want tocreate some kind of change.”Auriol says many fans refer to

her previous album, Call it Love as“a break-up album”. “It was sadand beautiful,” she says, adding:“This album, I’d like to think, is somuch happier and bolder.”The music switches between

blues, folk, reggaewith elements ofmany other genres, includingwhatAuriol calls her “Bond-inspiredsong”. “Because I’m a storyteller,I tell the story in whichever wayworks best.”She’s also quick to point out that

the fantastic band behind her

helped “bring everything to life”.Auriol is currentlyworkingwith

bassist Andre Webb, who also actsas her musical director, guitaristJason De Laney, drummer JasonBeukes and keyboardist YvanPotts and when asked how she metthem, she quips: “I’m blaming thegods on that one.”When she returned toCapeTown

after working in Johannesburg forthree years, Auriol says a randomperson, “out of the goodness of hisheart”, connected her with agroup.WhileAndre is the only sur-viving bandmember, the situationevolved into one where she nowworks with what she calls: “anamazing bunch of musicians”.While many of them play for otherartists, Auriol says she alwaysworks with the group when formu-lating a song “so that it’s ourmusicand not my music”.“We always have a good time on

stage.”Away from the stage, Auriol is

alsomoving into the film industry, playing the role of the “seer” in the

local Sci-Fi series Spelonk. A songshe released with Crimson Housefrontman Riaan Smit “ChildAtone” will also be featured in thepost-apocalyptic piece that ex-plores what music and languagewould sound like in 2044.

Auriol is also in the process ofwriting a book which she is releas-ing in segments on her website. “Iam essentially writing to my greatgranddaughter about music andlife,” she explains.“When I sit and I write I have a

greater understanding of what I dowhen I sing, so that process hasbeenvery interesting.”Auriol saysthe chance to write something oth-er than song lyrics gives her achance to decompress and be moreconscious of her actions.“Writing is a release,” she says,

before adding: “When I finally getto perform, I’m free.”Whilemusic fans can already get

a taste of this freedomwithDream-ing Music which is already availa-ble on iTunes, Auriol encourageslisteners to keep an eye on her Fa-cebook page for the big reveal ofthe venue for her launch.V For more information about Auriol Hays,a taste of her music or to read segmentsfrom her book, visit auriolhays.co.za. Live music, dance and visual ef-fects will be combined to take theaudience on a captivating journeywhen Remission comes to theGrandWest Grand Arena thisweekend.Billed as a journey from the be-

ginning of creation to the fulfilm-ent of time, the touring musicalproduction will be staged byBreeth Productions in the GrandArena on Friday 20 and Saturday21 May where hip-hop and rap willmeet orchestral sounds and choirs. All songs are original and the

brain child of songwriter, compos-er, session guitarist, vocalist, ar-ranger and studio producerFabriz-io Morgia, who has been releasingmusic since the late ’80s beforeforming the bandFMTrain in 1999.He nowworksmainly on his pro-

duction company, based in Gor-don’s Bay, using creative commu-nities and the arts to get activelyinvolved in communities.

Remission features Zayo Grif-fiths, formerly known as ZandroGriffiths when she performedwiththe groups CVZee and Major Play-az, along with rapper Stax.“Remission is not only a fusion of

styles but an awesome ‘pay it for-ward’ event,” Fabrizio says.“In societies where drugs, abuse

and crime is in the order of the day,we need to take hands in standingup by imparting life values and lifechanging events.”With this in mind he says the

production speaks truth about lifeand the belief that amessage of for-giveness can bring change in com-munities plagued by these issues.“Change starts from within, and

our communities can only changeonce the hearts of the people haschanged for the good.”V Tickets cost between R150 and R225from www.nuelight.co.za. Visitwww.breethproductions.co.za for moreabout the show.

LEGAL TALK WITH DENZIL

ChangingnuptialagreementsIt is common practice that couples get mar-ried “out of community of property”. Butas people become more and more informedand educated, many wish to change theirmatrimonial regime after they have beenlegally married. Most people think that yourmatrimonial

regime is caste in “matrimonial stone”, butit can be changed after the marriage.Section 21(1) of theMatrimonial Property

Act provides that maried couples may ap-ply jointly to a court for leave to change thematrimonial property system that appliesto theirmarriage. The courtmay order thatthe existing matrimonial property systemno longer applies to their marriage andmay authorise them to enter into a notarialcontract by which their future/new matri-monial property system is to be regulatedon conditions as the court may deem fit. This Act requires that the court must be

satisfied that there are sound reasons forthe suggested change, sufficient notice ofthe suggested change has been given to allthe creditors of both spouses and that noother person will be prejudiced by the pro-posed change. The application must be brought in the

court in the area of jurisdiction in whichthe couple resides and must include infor-mation concerning any change of address.

Guidelines. Notice must be given to the Registrar

of Deeds in terms of section 97(1) of theDeeds Registries Act and must contain ap-propriate submissions with regard to theregistration procedure of the immovableproperties as contained in the agreement.

. The draft notarial contract must be an-nexed to the application.

. Notice of intention tomake the applica-tion must be published in the GovernmentGazette and two local newspapers at leasttwo weeks before the date on which the ap-plication will be heard at court.

. The date on which the application willbe heardmust be specified in the publishednotice and anyone who wishes to object tothe proposed change, or to make any repre-sentations in that regard, must be told thatthis can be done bywriting to the Registrarof the court and sending a copy to the appli-cants’ attorney, or by appearing in court onthe date of the hearing. The notice must al-so state that the application and proposedcontract can be inspected at the office of theRegistrar and the applicants’ attorney.

. At least two weeks’ prior notice of theapplication must be given by certified postto all creditors and a list of creditors, veri-fied by affidavit, must be included in the ap-plication along with proof that notice hasbeen given to them.

Financial position. Sufficient information regarding the

assets and liabilities of the couple must beset out in the application.

. The application must include detailson any past sequestration and any pendinglegal proceedings in which a creditor isseeking to recover payment of debt due byeither one of the couple.

. If any change in the parties’ financialposition occurs before the application isheard, a supplementary affidavit reflectingsuch change must be filed.

Sound reasons for the changeCare must be taken to motivate fully the

proposed change in the existing matrimo-nial property system. The reasons reasonsmust be convincing, valid and anchored toreality. Applicants must explain why noother person will be prejudiced by the pro-posed change. The order sought and thecontract which it is proposed to registermust contain a provision which preservesthe rights of pre-existing creditorsThe desire to change the matrimonial re-

gime is usually to protect assets from cred-itors. Aswe can see from the above it is pos-sible to change your matrimonial regimebut the reasons and process submitted tothe court can be onerous.

LETTERS

Death penaltyis requiredI have often wondered why it is soimportant to those who deny the deathpenalty how murders are removed fromsociety.Does it really matter if the authorities

hang, shoot or poison the killers?Did the killers of that innocent girl,

killed in Tokai forest, care about herdeath when they shoved her face intothe dirt while strangling her? Did theyconsider her human rights while theysodomised her? Did they have anyconcern for her as she lay dying? Those who refute the return of the

death penalty are in pains to find anexcuse for murderers. They nevermention the anguish of a parent whosechild was murdered while playing in aneighbourhood park. When gangstersrob, rape and fire guns at unarmedpeople – while high on drugs – whymust ordinary people care about thegangsters’ emotional needs? It is this misplaced sympathy that has

resulted in an annual South Africanmurder statistics of 20 000. Those wholive in a well-protected leafy suburb, farremoved from the violence, want tolecture the victims. We need the death penalty; it is the

only punishment criminal’s fear.YAGYAH ADAMS

34 years on the PlainI felt rather nostalgic after reading thearticles of people, who spent their life onthe Plain.I would like to share my 34 years of

experience working in the Plain, whichhas become home to me. I becameextremely politically conscious way backin the ’60s, when forced removals werethe order of the day. When I arrived in Cape Town in the

’80s, I was totally entranced by the city’snatural beauty and the friendliness of itspeople. Within a short time, I cameface-to-face with the harsh reality of theracial divisions that marred the land-scape of this beautiful city. The primelocations facing the sea and the beautifulTable Mountain were reserved for whites, who lived in opulence.Coloureds and blacks lived and still

live in cramped-up matchboxes with littleor no recreational facilities other than agrowing number of shebeens, in whatbecame known as the Cape Flats.I heard about Mitchell’s Plain when I

worked for a doctor in Grassy Park. Inoticed a number of patients travelled allthe way to Grassy Park to see a doctorbecause they didn’t have decent healthcare services in the Plain. The apartheidgovernment callously dumped people intoMitchell’s Plain without proper facilities.I immediately decided that I would

open a practice in Mitchell’s Plain andoffer the residents a service to the best ofmy ability as my way of fighting thereprehensible apartheid regime.I was deeply incensed by the fact that

Mitchell’s Plain with one million peoplehad no hospital and government at thetime had no intentions of building one.I joined and became the chairman of

the Western Cape branch of the NationalMedical and Dental Association of SouthAfrica. This organisation was the opposi-tion to the racist white dominatedMedical Association of South Africa. One of our first campaigns was to fight

for a hospital in Mitchell’s Plain. It wassad to learn that Mitchell’s Plain only gotits hospital 22 years after we attained ourdemocracy. In 1985 I proudly stood with thousands

of Capetonians to celebrate the launch ofthe UDF at Rockland’s Civic Centre whenwe were exposed to the dynamic youngAlan Boesak, who had the audiencespellbound by his brilliant oratory, condemning the apartheid regime. In 1986the students and youth of Mitchell’s Plaintook to the streets to make the cityungovernable. News of the studentprotests went viral internationally, muchto the embarrassment of the apartheidregime. The doctors in Mitchell’s Plain formed

an organisation, Concerned DoctorsAssociation, to treat victims of stateabuse because the state hospitals wereno-go areas for activists at the time. Iwas proud to be part of that group. One of the biggest challenges at that

time was the apartheid regime dumpedtruck loads of mandrax to the Cape Flats’gangs to make them spies.I am deeply saddened that after all the

sacrifices made by the students in the’80s, most of our youth have turned todrugs and gangsterism. After 22 years of freedom I fail to

understand that we do not have anytheatres; arts schools; universities, skillsschools and there are no major industriesto combat the spiraling unemploymentrate in the area and to save workershours of travelling time to work.I have had 34 glorious years working in

Mitchell’s Plain. Everyday presented anexciting challenge. I love working hereand I love the people I treat.I would like to see more Mitchells

Plain residents become entrepreneurs andbusinessmen. They can do it, they justneed the chance.

Hold clubs accountableThere is a karate club in Mitchell’sPlain, run by the Sensei as a one-man-show. He doesn’t allow parents toestablish parent associations for raisingfunds to assist needy kids to attendnational and international tournaments. If they do raise funds, all money mustbe paid into his account which ismanaged by himself and his wife. Thereis no monitoring association that canmonitor these karate clubs and howthey utilise funds. Sometimes CityCouncil and big organisations donatefunds. Local kitten oneof 35 worldwideThe world’s rarest kitten – a

Lykoi or Werewolf Cat – hasbeen rescued from the Compa-ny’s Garden by staff and volun-teers fromTears Animal RescueFeral Cat Project. The cat, found under a bush,

is the only natural-born Lykoion record in South Africa andone of just 35 in the world, mak-ing this one of the most excitingdiscoveries in the SouthAfricananimal world in recent years.Part of a litter of six kittens tak-en to Tears for sterilisation inMarch after the disappearanceof their mother – a short haireddomestic tabby – the onlystrange-looking kitten in the lit-ter has since been confirmed asan incredibly rare Lykoi. The kitten’s strange appear-

ance prompted Tears’ veterinarian, Dr Tra-cy Dicks, to take skin scrapings to test forvarious skin diseases. All returned nega-tive findings and with the help of Tears’ op-erations and feline programme manager,Mandy Store, the search to uncover themysteryof this strange cat began in earnest.Store says: “We even tested to see if the

kitten was a Devon Rex but results alsocame back negative. The mother and fiveother kittens in the litter – all short-haireddomestic tabbies – gave us no clues aboutour new arrival so we widened our re-search. We were absolutely stunned to dis-cover that we’d brought into our shelter therarest kitten in South Africa – the weird, wonderful and legendary Werewolf Cat.”United States veterinarian and world Ly-

koi specialist, Dr Johnny Gobble, says thelittle Lykoi at Tears is the first natural mu-tation in South Africa reported to him.“The Lykoi breeder in South Africa start-

ed with Lykoi cats from another breederthat we began with our lines, so those catswere bred and did not occur naturally.”Gobble, fascinated by rare breeds and ge-

netics, was the first breeder of Lykoi in theworld from naturally occurring Lykoi. Hesays that about 20 years ago, these oddballcats were thought to have the Sphynx orDevon gene but have since been found to bea completely new, natural mutation of cat.He is not surprised that the only naturalSouth African Lykoi was found living wildunder a bush.

“All of the Lykoi that started the breedwere found in very similar situations. Wehave some from shelters, some from feralcat colony trap and release programmes, and some that were found on the streets. This is why we call the Lykoi a secondchance breed. All of the cats in the startingprogrammewere rescues.Theyhaveagreatpersonality overall, and we have found nogenetic health problems so far. Since theycome from the feral colonies, I think theyhave great immune systems.”Since monitoring of the breed began in

2011, there have been 34 reported naturalmutations from around the world. “TheTears’ Lykoi is the 35th,” Gobble says. The discovery made sense of the kitten’s

unusual behaviour – Tears staff had ob-served that he did not play as a typical catwould, and displayed qualities that weremore dog-like. Initially it was assumed thathe maintained his aloof and stoic demean-our because he was a shy feral, but it is nowclear that this is the typical behaviour of aLykoi.Tears hasnamed the rare treasureEyona,

a Xhosa name that means “The One.” It isbelieved that those carrying the name areattracted to mysteries and exhibit fierce in-dependence.Eyona is in the safe care of Tears Animal

Rescue and will not be rehomed. He hasbeen given ahappy andquiet place inwhichto develop as a normal kittenwould, despitebeing one-of-a-kind.

Bringing home the Vans titleJordy Maree from Kalk Bay has clinched

the junior titles at theVansSurf ProClas-sic which was completed in epic 1.0 to 1.3

metre waves and ideal conditions at YoYo’sin Lambert’s Bay on Sunday. The first World Surf league (WSL) events

to be run north of Cape Town on the Westcoast of SouthArica, the Vans Surf Pro Clas-sic showcased the country’s best men andjunior surfers as they chased a total prize-purse ofR50 000 and invaluable points on thequalifying series and WSL Africa regionalrankings. The junior final saw a quartet of the coun-

try’s topu.18 rippers tearingup the pumpingA-frame peaks withMaree dominating fromstart to finish to clinch his first JQS eventtitle in style. Accumulating scores of 8.33and 9.33 on his opening rides, Maree had hisopponents in a combination situation fromthe outset. Jake Elkington, also from Kom-metjie, delivered a 7.67 but still needed anear-perfect 9.99 while Adin Masencampfrom Strand and Max Elkington (appearingin a final with his brother for the first time),needed to improve both their counting rideswhen the heat ended.Themen’s semi-finals were nail-biting en-

counters punctuated by incredible manoeu-vreswith both going down to thewire. In thefirst, deVries rackedupanexcellent 8.83 andfollowed thatwith a 7.77 before DaveyBrandgot on the scoreboard. The goofy foot fromKommetjie respondedwith scores of 7.93 and

8.33 and, needing 8.28 for a place in the final,he came agonisingly close when he wasawardedan8.10 onhis last ride in the closingseconds. The final of the QS1000 rated men’s event

saw Beyrick De Vries from uMhlanga and

Michael February from Kommetjie go headto head in a spectacular high-flying airshow.

With a light crosswind blowing perfectlyinto the rights, both surfers puntedmanoeu-vres above the lip onvirtually every ride and

each ended up counting a pair of eight-pointscores.It was de Vries’ rides that impressed the

judges more though, and he earned his firstQS event title along with R12 000 in prize-money and 1000 pointswhenhis 8.67 and 8.47left him a slim 0.40 of a point ahead of Febru-ary’s 8.23 and 8.07.His points haul moved de Vries into the

top 100 on the QS ranking after just twoevents this year, while February’s 750 pointssaw him jump into the top 30.The second semi saw February open up

with an 8.67 and an incredible 9.50 beforeMatt McGillivray (Jeffreys Bay) posted hisfirst meaningful score of 7.50. The lankyKommetjie ripper then added an even better9.60 which left McGillivray facing a daunt-ing 19.10 total, the highest of the event. But SA’s highest raneked QS surfer took

off on a setwave andposted a perfect 10 pointride, his second of the event, to get back intocontention.Still requiring 9.10, McGillivray waited

patiently but did not get the opportunity tocomplete what would have a famous come-back and had to settle for third place overalland a haul of 560 points and R3000.The Vans Surf Pro Classic has set the bar

for performance surfing in SouthAfrica andYoYo’shas establishedan instant reputationas one of the best contest sites in the country, being likened to the famous Lower Trestlesin California by many of the competitors

Jordy Maree was in fine form on his way to winning the Vans Surf Pro Classic titles in Lam-berts Bay. PHOTO: WSL/THURTELL

The road to fame has started in all ear-nest for the two high school sides ofPortland and Tafelsig.

After two assignments, Portland and Ta-felsig are unbeaten and share the top of thelog standings with six points apiece in theMRP Foundation High Schools SoccerLeague – Mitchell’s Plain.Tafelsig High, the 2014 former league

champions and Mondale High, the leagueholders of the 2012 and 2013 championships, came head-to-head in a tense game that pro-duced some thrilling end-to end entertain-ing football.Andrew Geldenhuys’ Tafelsig schoolboy

side by virtue of Mickyle Smith’s first halfstrike was enough to sink Mondale High 1-0at a very noisyMRP sports complex inWest-ridge on Saturday.Mondale’s potent firing engine in the form

of Riyaaz Nell, Ethan Stellenboom and Jem-aaeel Ockers constantly raided the opposi-tion’s goal area – only to be stopped in theirtracks by Tafelsig High’s deadly defensivemarkings in which particularly central de-fender YahiyaWilson and goalie Clayton duPlessis played a pivotal role.

Portland conquer over luckless WestridgePortland High was over the last four sea-

sons among the top-eight finishers and ifthey apply themselves and are serious abouttheir intentions they may finally enter thewinner’s enclosure.Meanwhile the victorious side beat a luck-

less Westridge High side 3-1 after havinghelda slender 1-0 advantage leadat thebreakthrough a well taken goal by Leo McCleod. They added two more goals in the second

stanza through Tashreeq Morris and Mas-noon Finch while Bevan Johannes repliedfor Westridge.

Spine Road High on the victory marchFinally SpineRoadHigh have hit the right

notes to record a resounding 1-0 victory andsend the ego of Glendale High reeling. However, spare a thought for Anbeuto

Samuels (goalkeeper), Keegan Petersen andKeegan Booysen who were outstanding inthe Glendale side but could not reap thefruits of success. In the end it was primarily the decisive

match-winning effort from Tapey Freder-icks that secured the 1-0 result and his sidesfirst three points after losing 2-0 to CedarHigh the previous week.Other results:Beacon Hill High 1, Rocklands High 1;
