Clarify: What, why, how, when…• What
– Volunteer for Avalonia to maintain trail.
• Why– Enjoy outdoors, hiking. – Want to contribute to nice trails locally.– Started last year, but didn’t quite succeed.
• How– Go to trail 2x a month to hike.– At least 1x, work to improve, at least a little.
• When will I know I have succeeded?– When I hike and see no major improvements needed.– When only work is routine (remove small branches). – Some specifics: new blazes, corrected signs,
Write a paragraph…This fall and early winter I would like to continue my volunteer work maintaining
a trail at the Nature Center. I enjoy hiking and would like to contribute to the
local trail system. However, I would like to complete many improvements
that I meant to complete over the summer, but failed to do. These include:
remarking or relocating parts of the trail, fixing areas of poor condition (wet
areas need boards), and re-blazing a spur from the current trail. I believe
that I could accomplish these specifics if I visit the area twice a month: once
for routine work and another time for the larger projects. I’ll know I have
reached my goal when I have accomplished the specific improvements I
have identified. Also, I will know that I have succeeded when I no longer
see big improvements that are necessary, only routine maintenance.
Goal Updates – October 27th
• Service: to better maintain trail for Avalonia Land Conservancy.
• By visiting 2x a month– 1x for walking, 1x for bigger maintenance
• Have not done great
• Have visited to walk
• Have purchased necessary supplies
• Need to set time aside on weekend– November 5th & 6th
Goal Updates – October 27th
• My service goal for the fall semester was to better
maintain the trail I have ‘adopted’ by the Nature Center.
I aimed to walk the trail 1x a month and do trail work 1x a
month. I have walked the trail at least 1x a month, but
have not done any heavy trail work. However, I have
purchased some of the necessary supplies (wood,
screws, paint). I plan to complete some of this work over
the weekend of November 5th and 6th.
Goal Updates – October 27th
• What is your goal?
• How’s it going? (a little detail)
• What to do in future to keep on track or to
get back on track or to modify goal.
Goal Updates – End of SemesterGoal Updates – End of Semester
• What was your goal?
– Was it for the semester, or is it a year-long goal?
• Either way... Write a comprehensive review of the goal
– your successes and challenges
– what worked and didn’t, why and why not
– what your plan is for the upcoming semester, including details:
• What (is your goal?)
• Why (choose that?)
• How (specifically, will you reach the goal?)
• When (will you know you have accomplished the goal?)
Last semester I worked to maintain a trail at the Nature Center. Although I did not
accomplish as much as I was hoping to accomplish, I did make some noticeable improvements. I
was hoping to have the trail at a point where only routine maintenance was required, but there are
still some significant improvements to be made on the trail, including installing boardwalks and
locating an overgrown trail. However, I have succeeded in rerouted a mis-labeled trail, clearing a
great deal of brush and litter from the trail (particularly after our storms), and correcting the
blazes on much of the trail. In fact, last week I was sent a notice from someone about how the
trail is much improved (she didn’t know I was working on it).
I didn’t accomplish all that I was hoping to because of the time commitment. I thought
I would be able to visit the trail twice a month, but I could not always do that. I did not visit at all
in December, but managed one or two visits every other month. As I look to the second
semester, I will continue working on the trail, with the goal of completing all work by June. With a
long weekend in February and time in March, I think I will be able to get many of the bigger
projects done by sticking better to my 2-visits-a-month commitment. I’ll know I have reached my
goal when I have finished the specific improvements on my list (new sign, replacing lost trail, new
boards for bridges) and I no longer see improvements that are necessary, only routine
maintenance.
